Windsor Station Restaurant & Barroom

Story

Windsor, also known as Windsor-Mt. Ascutney, is an Amtrak intercity train station in Windsor, Vermont currently served by the Vermonter train over the New England Central Railroad line tracks. The station building is owned by Stacy and Jon Capurso who operate the Windsor Station Restaurant & Barroom there.HistoryAs the first town in Vermont to break ground for the railroad, Windsor briefly leaped to the forefront of mid-19th century commercial development. Around the turn of the century, when Windsor's original 1847 railway station burned, the Burlington contractors Mason & Co. were hired to build "a good type of a modern Railway Station...after the standard design of the Central Vermont Railway Company." Complete with electric lights throughout, a modern hot water heater, birch veneer side seating, and separate waiting rooms for men and women, the new station was to cost about $10,000 and be completed by January 1, 1901.Like many railway stations erected during this period, the Central Vermont's standard design combined function with style. The low hipped roof (a Romanesque feature) extends beyond the wall surface creating a large over-hang to shelter a waiting platform. Decorative brackets and columns support the roof and round arched windows and doors penetrate the four façades, typical of the style. The verge or barge board, a wooden ornamental motif along the eaves, was borrowed from the Gothic Revival style, a contemporary of the Romanesque. Many of the original materials used to build the station remain intact, such as the yellow pine interior sheathing, buff pressed brick, and window and door sills of Barre granite. The sounds and vibrations of the train rushing down the tracks completes this preserved early 20th century environment.

I had an incredible dining experience at Windsor Station Restaurant in Windsor, Vermont! The moment I stepped inside, the nostalgic decor transported me to a classic train station, creating a charming and unique ambiance. The food was simply delightful, with every dish bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The attention to detail and presentation were evident, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.nnWhat truly made the evening unforgettable was the exceptional service provided by the staff. They were attentive, friendly, and genuinely cared about ensuring we had a fantastic time. From recommendations on the menu to prompt and efficient service, they made us feel like valued guests.nnMy companions and I are already planning our next visit to Windsor Station Restaurant. It's a place where you can savor mouthwatering dishes, immerse yourself in a charming atmosphere, and receive top-notch service. If you're in Vermont, this gem of a restaurant is an absolute must-visit! I enthusiastically give it a well-deserved 5-star rating!n
Cozy place with the history and comfort food. Offers kids menu and huge portions for kids and adults. We ordered a full size calamari, full size mussels and a burger to share for two people and could not finish all the food By the way, mussels had an amazing broth, sort of sweet and sour/thai like.nThe staff was very pleasant and the atmosphere was great! Really happy we were able to get a reservation on a very short notice and dine there.
My husband and I made a reservation here on a whim based on our Airbnb host’s recommendation. We enjoyed ourselves so much! The building itself is so cool and the ambiance was perfect- not to loud and dimmed lights. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate from start to finish. The maple butter that came with the bread was amazing, and we had the meatballs and ricotta to start with pictured below and to die for. We each got a different burger, cooked different ways, which was done correctly and exactly how we like them. The orange brown sugar cheesecake was delicious, we had trouble deciding which dessert to get because they all sounded so good. Service was fantastic, from the host to the server, and our bill was extremely reasonable. I’m sad we’re just passing through because I’d love to eat here many more times!
Interesting spot for a dinner date or to simply get a meal and drinks. The train station atmosphere was fascinating to be in, especially when an actual train went by!nHowever, the food part did not stand up to the restaurant's incredible sights. My burger was flavorless, although it was fresh. The pasta was pretty good, nothing stood out. The bartender made a delicious Moscow mule, and was attentive to our needs.
From the best-ever cocktails to the delicious made-in-house food to the warm and wonderful service from Mark, we were wowed! Bonus points for the ambience of trains passing through the station and the featured menu/drink items being stellar. A highlight of our trip!
