Consistency is key. Staff here really hustle, but when packed it can have a slower feel, but that is what happens when you are full so I expected it. Tuna is good, rolls are generous with a wide variety of creative choices. Staff were friendly and on top of water, tea refills, clearing empty dishes, letting us know what was on the serving platters, and what was still to come.
I have come to sushi ai a couple of times and I love the experience each time. It is a smaller restaurant however it is amazingly cozy, the food is so fresh, service is amazing, and you get your order in a timely matter. I absolutely love their fresh sushi, I am not the biggest fan of fried sushi so when I tried it I did not love it, but that is just a personal taste. However if you love sashimi please come here, a m a z i n g! So delicious, cut beautifully, and the chef does not hold back on the presentation of their sushi. However despite the name of the restaurant, the best udon I’ve had in Calgary is from sushi ai, and the calamari to die for. 10/10
GOOD: 1. Rolls are good quality, bigger than in most of the other places. 1. Nice design and atmosphere. BAD: 3. Very slow service. They brought the last sushi combo, when we finished eating. They did apologize for that and applied 10% discount, they said. When I checked, the discount looked like 1%, I asked about it. The server said: oh, the discount was for that combo only, so $1.4. Thanks a lot 4. When you pay the tips options start from 15%, and 20%, 25%. Either the place is very confident about their service, or think they are just smarter, than everyone else in our suburbs
We've come here for lunch a couple of times, and like the variety offered on their menu. Our first visit was good. The waitress was friendly and was able to help substitute an item in his ramen lunch set. Some of the sushi rolls are also larger than other places. Their mango sauce though, is not too great. On our last visit, a different waitress Asian woman with glasses was exceptionally rude to us. We wanted to sit in a booth, but she said she was too busy to clean it for us, then just left us standing in the middle of the restaurant. We had to find a table on our own. However, she had the time to clean that same booth for the customers who came in shortly after us. This second visit turned us off so much, that we haven't been back since and is also the main reason for the 2 star review. Terrible service.
This was without a doubt the worst sushi I’ve had in my life. I have sat on writing this review for over a week now and do not mean to sound dramatic, but there’s no other way to put it. While an argument could be made that we went on Sunday afternoon near closing time so they didn’t have their best ingredients left, hard avocados, stiff rice, soggy tempura, and dried up, dark green wasabi is very unpleasant and there is no excuse for these such low quality for basic things at sushi restaurants. Moreover, their speciality rolls were so poorly done! The circumference to height ratio of the sushi was also terrible — the pieces would be too flat and everything would fall out. You can even see one of the pieces in the photo falling apart before we even touched it. Also, check the amount of cucumber we got stuffed into those BC rolls compared to the pittance of salmon skin. I have never not been able to finish sushi, but here we truly did not wish to continue eating and left with several pieces remaining. All in all, Sushi Ai was a mess. I see there are several positive reviews so maybe the trick is to go on a weekday, but there is still no excuse for how negligent and inexperienced the people who ‘prepared’ this were.
Decided to order a party platter last minute, along with some fried shrimp dumpling and unagi Don. The order was ready much faster than anticipated, beautifully packed and smelling amazing! The platter was unreal, very fresh fish and the California roll mixture was to die for. Shrimp dumplings were definitely my favorite, very soft and pillowy. Initially I thought the unagi was going to lack some ingredients but I was wrong, it was very rich and delicious. Calgary isn't known for great sushi but this restaurant changes all of that. Also not to mention the great service, server was soo polite and thorough, she definitely made me want to come back again. Very family friendly restaurant with many great choices. Vegetarian options: Plenty of vegetarian options Kid-friendliness: Lots of choices for kids and booths are secure for kids. Parking: Lots of parking space in the plaza and in front of the restaurant Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs or uncomfortable flooring , very wheelchair accessible.
Food was amazing, just a bit concerned there was only one waitress doing a lot of jobs all by herself. Yet, the service was great and the food delicious! Great sushi place.
I always order pick up here. I feel like there's not much good sushi places in NW, and I think this place is one of the few good ones available. If you're ordering delivery or pick up, I strongly recommend to order early. Last few times wait time was an hour, that's the only down side. Food is worth waiting though! Staff are always so friendly as well. Ordered agedashi tofu and king Katsu. So good.
It’s decent, but not amazing. The rolls have a lot of rice, the steak roll is extremely dry. Other rolls were not bad, I would definitely not recommend the yakisoba though, the ones they make here was basically beef chow mien.
Great food. Good portion and very fresh. The restaurant is also clean with good service. They have a variety of dishes as well. I highly suggest going there when you low key want to eat some Japanese food.
