Story

Sugar and Spice Custom Cakery specializes in customized cakes & cupcakes for all kinds of events. We take great pride in making custom orders into edible pieces of art. Meticulous attention to detail, allows for orders to be as unique as the individual. Our cake toppers are hand sculpted and/or painted and can become a keepsake (a treasured memento you will have forever). All recipes are made from scratch using only the freshest and top of the line ingredients. Sugar and Spice Custom Cakery is a home based business; we believe in providing small business service with large business results. We can keep our prices lower than most commercial kitchens since we don’t have the overhead expenses they do.

The owner has almost 20 years’ experience in the industry, from working at several local bakeries & custom cake shops to freelancing. She is a graduate from the Minneapolis Art Institute International Culinary School with Summa cum laude, is Food Safety Certified through the state of MN and her business is approved and registered by the State of MN. All products are homemade and not subject to inspection

Due to the high volume of requests we receive daily, please take a moment to review the below information

1) How far in advance do I need to book?
Sugar and Spice Custom Cakery is a home based business registered with the State of MN and I book up fairly quickly because I only take 1 order a weekend as each order is so unique, (because we hand sculpt and hand paint our cakes) and requires special attention. So the sooner the better but a minimum 2 weeks is required

2) I want to order a cake, what are your prices?
Prices vary so much for custom cakes that there is not one set price point. Pricing for cakes STARTS at $2.75 a slice for a buttercream finished cake, and $3.50 a slice for a white fondant finished cake (colored is more). These prices are without any decorations. Decorations are charged based a labor fee ($35 per hour) and how long it takes to design the cake. Please keep in mind that the majority of the cakes you find on Pinterest, google, and other bakery websites take a minimum of 3-4 hours, some even longer. Yes I also do 3 dimensional cakes; these cakes are a price point in their own game. Cakes from Sugar and Spice Custom Cakery are edible pieces of artwork.

3) How do a get a price quote?
We need 4 things to provide the most accurate price quote:
a) Servings? How many people you want your cake to serve (so important since cakes are priced on servings).
b) A budget (if you have one) this way I can provide the best decorations that fit into your budget
c) Theme of the cake (pictures are best) - if including, please let me know what you may or may not want in the picture - flowers maybe a different color. Stripes vertical instead of horizontal etc...
d) Date of the event (very important – pricing will not be quoted without).

4) Can I order a cake over email or phone? Yes we can – keep in mind all custom orders require a signed contract and payment received at least 2 weeks before pickup date. We do provide a complimentary design session which makes ordering easier if you are able to make an appointment and come to our kitchen.

5) Do you do cupcakes? Yes, my cupcakes start at $1.75 per cupcake for vanilla bean or chocolate cupcake with vanilla bean frosting. Decorations and other flavors are an enhancement and are charged accordingly. Please advise what you are looking for

6) Flavors: I offer all flavors, but pricing above is based on basic flavors (chocolate and vanilla). Any other flavor (red velvet, lemon, cookies & cream, caramel, special fillings etc.) are also enhancements are charged accordingly. You see I don't believe in charging more for ingredients you may not want, so I just charge for ingredients needed.

7) Do you do sheet cakes. Sugar and Spice does not do traditional grocery store style sheet cakes. The cakes we provide are more rounds, squares, etc. and are meant to be tiered. Each tier has 3 layers of cakes and 2 layers of filling, which average in height anywhere from 4-6" per tier. Serving sizes are based on how professional catering companies cut cakes, which is in a tic-tac-toe format style. Each serving piece is roughly 1"x2"xheight. Nice size pieces

9) Getting Married? We offer a complimentary 1 year anniversary cake with qualified purchase. Celebrating a 1st birthday - we offer a free smash with qualified orders. Please inquire
