It’s possible to travel just 3 hours and feel like you’re in another world. When we booked our adventure over the phone, Susan asked about our riding experience, any food sensitivities and how much we wanted to dive in with the ranch experience. When we arrived, Susan came out of the house to welcome us and showed us our cabin which they just finished last year. I wanted every experience the ranch had to offer and Tim and Susan did not disappoint. From waking up at sunrise to feed the horses, to witnessing the birth of a calf they didn’t have control over that but a total bonus, fixing fences, riding all day, cattle pushing, taking care of the horses, riding in the back of a truck after a long day, taking care of calves, glorious sunrises and sets, magnificent landscape to wonderful home cooked meals. We would swap stories at the table as I stuffed my mouth with biscuits, steak and homemade jam. I would watch the day break from the loft in our cabin. There was something so comforting and so right to put on the same pair of dusty jeans and boots as I got ready to tackle the day. I never once felt stupid for still not grasping how to cinch my horse by the third day or accidentally splitting up a herd during a push down the mountain. Susan made sure she snapped a photo or got a video during our glory moments. We were all treated like family and it was hard to say goodbye when the time came. Your adventure will be worth every penny, every sore butt and dusty face. In my 43 years next to my daughter’s birth, this was the greatest moment of my life. My soul was alive the whole week and have found my calling after my daughter flys the coop. There is no better place to heal the soul than on the back of a horse.
Last weekend, my sister and I stayed at Steens Mountain Guest Ranch, and it was an incredible experience! We stayed for 3 days and rode horses to view two different kiger mustang herds. It was amazing to see the kiger mustangs roaming in their natural habitat. And if you’re nervous about riding horses, I was too! Before this past weekend, I had only been on a horse for an hour. But our hosts gave me a very sweet and gentle horse and walked me through everything I needed to know to navigate horseback riding. During our stay at the ranch, our hosts Tim, Susan & Cade welcomed us so warmly and we greatly enjoyed spending time with them! They are the kindest people and have so much joy in meeting new people and showing them around! Tim also shared with us his delicious biscuit recipe! The cabin that my sister and I stayed in is really cute and had everything we needed towels/soap/fan/fridge/etc. And from our cabin porch, we could see the beautiful sunset and watch as the horses passed by on their way out to graze. It was such a peaceful weekend! Also, our hosts told us about a county ranch rodeo in Burns, so on our way home, my sister and I stopped by and it was fun to watch the various events. Overall, we highly recommend going to see the kiger mustangs and staying at the Steens Mountain Guest Ranch!
Our Kiger Mustang Experience was amazing! The accommodations were very nice and the food was delicious. The O’Crowley family took such great care of us and our time spent with them was delightful. The scenery, the horses we rode, and the special opportunity to see the wild horses made the trip absolutely perfect!Rooms: 5/5
This was definitely the greatest vacation experience! Everything from the adventure to the food to the lodging was wonderful. Tim and Susan are amazing and so much fun. I can't wait to go back.Rooms: 5/5
Had a great time! Tim and Susan were great hosts and Tim and Dan were perfect guides. They matched horses to each person's experience level and comfort we had riders with no experience up to intermediate. We were a little concerned that the 4-hour ride might be too much for the zero-experience riders, but it worked out great! Did a stop about every hour or so to check out the views and stretch out a bit. Also loved the dog, Rosie, who ran alongside during the ride! Will hopefully be back at some point :
I have always loved the Steens and I booked the Keiger Mustang experience with a friend at the guest ranch. We had a wonderful time. Tim and Susan were great hosts and the accommodations and food were great. We had a nice ride upon arrival and the next morning ride out to see the mustangs and we weren't disappointed. The next day was perfect. We came upon a herd of about 75 mustangs. We tied up the horses and walked over to get a better look. They looked at us and decided we weren't a threat so we were able to sit and watch them graze and the babies sleep while we ate lunch. It was s wonderful time and I highly recommend a visit to their ranch
My wife and I did not stay at the ranch, but we had an amazing horseback riding experience. We chose the 5-hour ride to go see the wild Kiger mustangs and it was everything we had hoped for. The horses we were riding were mustangs and were matched to our abilities we are intermediate to more advanced riders so we were able to open the horses up a bit for a fantastic ride - far from your typical nose-to-tail experience. The scenery was stunning and the Kigers - approx. 80 of them - were beautiful and amazing to watch. Thank you Tim and Susan for making it a ride and overall experience we will never forget and the dinner was delicious!.
As a little girl it was a dream of mine to see the wild kiger mustangs. Being a single mom and my boys not having a lot of experience with horses I was not sure if we could go. But Tim,Susan, Cali and David welcomed us on a adventure and a most memorable experience. Their kind warm hearts helped us feel right at home. My dreams came true not only to see the Kiger but also I got to ride one! A huge thank you for an amazing experience. My boys 8&12loved it! They came home and built a play ranch. They want to go back next year. I appreciate the meal time together and the learning that happened about ranching for both my boys and I.
Our family of four had a great time on a 4-hour trail ride. Most of us had not been on a horse before, but that was not a problem - the horses were very well trained and very manageable. The sights were awesome. High desert and deep canyons made the ride picturesque. Tim and his son Dan were excellent trail leaders and were very informative about riding and ranching. We were there at the beginning of August - it was pretty warm, but bearable. The smoothies at the finish of ride hit the spot!
My 10-year old daughter and I with a sneak guest appearance by the 5-year old fireball recently completed the Kiger Mustang experience with Tim & Susan. What a fantastic adventure vacation! We are still smiling from all the fun we had. Tim & Susan were gracious hosts and made us feel a part of their family. The horses were lovely it had been well over 20 years since my last time riding, the lodging custom built and designed by their son Dan was perfect and the food was excellent. Seeing the high desert from the perspective of a horse was truly an experience and something I never would have expected to be so enjoyable. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have met this family and shared in the experience. Oh, and the Kiger mustangs were pretty cool too!!!
