SOULE was a positive experience for my family and I. We were glad that we were able to support a black owned business and celebrate my son's graduation at the same time. We lucked up on a 7:15 reservation. They are reservation only for dine in. I think this is primarily because there is only about 4 or 5 seating spaces for diners. It seemed they had plenty of online and call pick up orders though as you could see the steady traffic on the Sunday night. We had the honey drizzled chicken with sides, catfish dinner with 2 sides. and the salmon dinner. My greens were a little salty for my taste but the sweet potatoes were exactly on point. Catfish was great, like home! We also had the New Orleans shrimp appetizer. It was small but super tasty. My daughter cleared the sauce from the bowl. We spent near $40 per person for 4 meals, 2 desserts, no drinks and an appetizer including tip which is a little pricey for us so we can't afford to go regularly but the food was delicious and we would order again. By the way the metered street parking was free at the time we went.
Since moving to Chicago I’ve been looking for a good comfort/soul food spot and I think I found it! I checked out Soulé on a Saturday evening and they did not disappoint. The staff was super friendly and they were BUSY good for them! I had the fried catfish plate with mac&cheese and greens. My friend had the white meat chicken plate with sweet potatoes and asparagus. We also shared the jerk wings and the banana pudding!! The catfish was DELISH! I haven’t had catfish this good since moving from New Orleans. And the sweet potatoes were to die for! The price for the amount of food was just right compared to some other souls food spots I’ve been too! I forgot to get pics of some of the food before we started eating, but that just tells you how good it was! Definitely make a reservation if you want to eat in as the space is not very large, but they also do carry out orders if you want to go that route! The only reason I did not give a 5 is because you knew the food was prepped ahead of time because it was served within a few minutes of ordering. Not a big deal, especially because of how busy they were but just a noticing!
Excellent Soul food restaurant in the heart of growing foodie neighborhood West Town. My brother came by for a late lunch and were fortunate to grab a walk-in spot, but be advised that this restaurant is predominantly booked via online reservation. Another pro tip - it's BYOB with a $10 corkage fee! We shared the honey glazed fried chicken and the lamp chops with a variety of side dishes. The food was absolutely delicious and the perfect amount to share between the two of us. Our favorite side dishes were definitely the creamed corn so flavorful! and dirty rice. We finished the meal with a banana pudding, which was also to die for. Overall, I was super satisfied with the meal. This spot is well deserving of its Bib Gourmand status. I was happy to support this Black female-led establishment and would love to return!
Personally I do not quite understand the mixed reviews. It could really be personal preference, because my wife and I have definitely had a great experience here. Sure, they may have asked us to come right at our reservation time instead of early which seems to be one thing someone complained about, but I think it is perfectly reasonable. We got the fried green tomatoes, the fried catfish entrée, the fried chicken entrée, and shrimp & grits. All the sides were on point, including the greens, which you typically wouldn't expect too much in restaurants vs. home-made. The shrimp & grits was my absolute favorite, though! I don't know what they put in there, but I can eat it all day. Oh and of course, eating all that food with some Kool-Aid was just refreshing. They also had very good decorations and there were customers taking pictures with them. In general I will definitely recommend this place, and hope it is not a hit or miss for you if you choose to go!
Really excellent soul food. We had the fried chicken and the lamb chops. Quick service, reasonably priced. The decor is tasteful — nice bathrooms. Good playlist going too.
First time eating at soule and it was a great experience. Wonderful atmosphere, great staff, and spectacular food. When we first arrived we were greeted promptly and then immediately walked to our seats. The menu was digital with a nice selection of food. We had salmon & shrimp, catfish, and dirty rice along with lamb. Needless to say, the food was great. All the meats were perfectly seasoned with the perfect amount of spice. The portions were large but not overwhelming. Overall it was a delightful time. I definitely recommend going.
The food was great but the customer service perspective was not so great. I’m going to sum it up because from start to finish was a disaster. The silverware was nasty. I ordered a soda before I ordered my meal and didn’t receive it until I was almost finished with my meal. I also had to pour my own can soda/ pop in a glass. My meal was supposed to come with cornbread but I didn’t receive that until it was time to pay the bill. When the cornbread arrived it was the width of my finger and when I asked why my cornbread was smaller than the people next to me the response was because that was the only size that can fit in a to go container. We ordered fried green tomatoes the waiter forgot about that so we canceled the order. We ordered dessert the waiter forgot about that. She came back twice to say I forgot was that for here or to go. We received the dessert 45 minutes later. I don’t think I will ever dine there again.
This is my 2nd time eating here and The one thing I noticed was that everything was very heavily salted. The only thing that was perfect was the mac & cheese. I still love how perfectly crispy and cooked the fried catfish is. But, the green beans not pictured and the dirty rice were extremely salty. Last time I was here I had The same things, along with the yams and fried green tomatoes and those are amazing.
We loved Soule! After having read the reviews for this restaurant, we decided to venture out to this destination to enjoy some great soulfood. The trip there was well worth our time and enjoyed by all in our party. The small storefront was well appointed, clean and delicious! We enjoyed shrimp and grits, blackened catfish, and fried chicken with sides of sweet potatoes and greens while listening to an old school R & B mix!! We sat at a window location and people watched as we looked out upon the West Fest. What a delightful venture!! Every dish was well prepared and Scrumpdeli-ishous!!!
We attempted to book a 1pm reservation because the website said that was the time Soule’2 opened. We were only able to get 2pm, but arrived at 1:55pm and saw a line of customers out front. By 2:02pm an employee opened the door and welcomed diners, so we didn’t wait long. Our server, Linda, was pleasant, friendly, and delightful. Other servers seemed less enthusiastic and could benefit from additional training. The fried catfish with 2 sides mac & cheese and sweet potatoes was good, but the shrimp & grits were quite salty. The restaurant is clean with modern decor. If you go, ask for Linda!!
