Large portions and great quality for the value, plus nice location on the water. The only con is the wait - you have to stand in line for 20-30+ minutes just to order for lunch on a somewhat sunny Friday. However, once you order the food comes out relatively quickly. They do have outdoor seating but it fills up quickly, every seat was taken. Definitely come earlier rather than later during peak meal times!
OVERALL: It's not a Comparable 5star restaurant Review - but awesome for a fish n chips shack. Super friendly staff, and fast and effective. Also busy and long line, so bring some time and a coat it can be windy and cold out there. DETAILED REVIEW: It is what it is, and that's also what it wants to be. A fish and chip shack that serves out of two converted containers. They offer a good seasonal fish selection salmon, cod, halibut and you can have it traditionally deep fried or grilled. We tried both, the fish and chips Cod and Halibut mix and the Grilled Salmon with Salad both were just great, juicy, and fresh and the salad was surprisingly delicious and fresh. We did not try the soup chowder but it was very popular and people seemed to love it. Great overall experience
Alright, return customer here. They executed their cooking technique flawlessly. No short cut on the fries, excellent batter on the fish, chowder was full of ingredients and flavour, the deep fried pickles complimented everything really well. Nice service, super efficient system in the kitchen! Overall it was just the perfect experience! Best fish and chips we ever had !
Amazing. The chowder was delicious. The sweet potato tempura taco was quite lovely. The halibut was very fresh, filling. It was a delicious meal. Outdoor seating is limited. Even with a lineup, the service was quick and the quality of food was great. Oh and the view was pretty great
Highly recommended by locals, worth the wait! I tried the BC Halibut and chips and it was phenomenal! The halibut was cooked well, flaky and tender; pairs amazingly with their in house tarter sauce. Even if you don’t like tarter sauce it is worth a try, you may be surprised. The chips, or fries, were fresh, seasoned well, and fried to perfection. To top the whole meal off was the refreshing side of coleslaw. Not a heavily coated in mayo, but has a light citrus and oil coating that balanced the meal. I would highly recommend!
Got a one piece halibut fish and chips and it was amazing! The fish was very fresh, soft and literally melts in your mouth. Both coleslaw and fries were amazing! Make sure you get there early because the lines are very long during prime time, especially during holidays/weekend.
Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Fresh ingredients and great fish. The chowder came in as a pleasant surprise with unexpected Thai flavours that is actually really nice! The fish taco was not so special, and very normal tasting. Definitely recommend other things! Watch out! The stairs leading down is EXTREMELY SLIPPERY!
Heard about this highly recommended place and was not disappointed! The lineup was worth the wait and the salmon and tuna were fresh and cooked perfectly with the best side salad I’ve had even at sit down restaurants. The staff even looked like they enjoyed working there grooving to some music. It was a great ending to our trip in Victoria. Next time I wanna try the fish and chips!
I came here with some friends from out of town. They, like me, had heard of Red Fish Blue Fish's stellar reputation and wanted to try it for themselves. I was quite excited when we got our food - it looked and smelled amazing. We ordered the halibut and chips, salmon and chips, and the jerk fish poutine. All three tasted great, and the house tartar sauce and coleslaw were wonderful complements to the fish and chips. Overall a very good lunch! Unfortunately, a few things kept this meal from earning a 5-star rating: The halibut was a little overcooked. Halibut is quite a lean fish, and a halibut fillet is never going to be as rich and tender as cod or haddock, but the halibut we were served was a little dry and tough, even for halibut. The salmon was better, but not truly buttery melt-in-your-mouth, as salmon can be. Now, the difference between that and what we ate would be an overcook of just 30 seconds or so. It's not easy to cook that consistently all the time, but for a place of its reputation, I had hoped Red Fish Blue Fish would have produced a candidate for the best fish I'd ever had, and instead got fish that was very delicious, but not extraordinary. Finally, the portion sizes were on the smaller end - this was fine for me and my friends, as we had had a large breakfast and weren't ravenously hungry, but if you plan to come hungry, prepare to order a little more food. All this being said, I highly recommend trying this place if you're in Victoria, the lines are long for good reason!
So far the best fish and chips I’ve tried. I had two generous portions of halibut. The batter was light, crispy and not oily. Halibut was fresh, tender and moist; it goes perfectly with their own tartar sauce. The chips or fries was also fried properly. Golden brown and crispy. Perfect match The chowder was delicious. Creamy and tomato based soup. Every scoop was a delight. Downside was I had to wait in line for more than an hour but I say it’s worth it. Definitely must try when you visit Victoria.
