It's camping...roughin it, with a chill river mere feet away plus 100yd access to an awesome low key bar/restaurant and hear great bands/singers. I read other reviews that things aren't perfect for low fares - wow. Wee wah. We had a great time and got a great vibe from the owners. We WILL be back and invite y'all to come on back and join in on the fun with "the Big Friendly" and his mates.
Was a great spot to unwind and do a little kayaking. They charged me and 2 friends $160 for 2 nights of tent camping with no electricity. We knew no one would be there when we got there and had been instructed to set up and settle up later over the phone but what no one told us is that it's 40 a night to camp anywhere alongside the river so three dudes paid 160 for 2 nights of tent camping. My friend goes 3 times a year and this is his 25th year going and he said he won't be back . I spoke with the property manager and he was just plane rude and hard to talk to so unfortunately we will not be back.
Friendly if a little confused. We rented canoes and kayaks from them. We were told to be on time for our 7 hour float but ended up waiting an hour or so in the parking lot as the drivers were "out on delivery". As it turned out an earlier large group was getting driven to their launch point. Somehow they didn't account for the size of the group? Not sure. Also, our driver insisted very specifically that we stay on the right side of the river at the take out point. On the river, while canoeing, I looked at my map on the phone and was very confused as the Bluffton Resort and Bar was on the left but since the driver was so insistent, we figured that they must have some reason for that. It turns out that you need to keep to the left bank, not the right. After calling the bar to confirm we all paddled upstream to make it across fairly fast water to the correct takeout point while campers on the right bank - White s Campground - heckled and bet that we wouldn't make it. It seems that the folks operating the Resort and Bar have just bought the business and are still sorting things out and working out the logistics. Other than those two somewhat painful events, we still had a fun paddle down some of the prettiest river waters in Iowa. We'll give them another try next year and hope that the kinks have been resolved.
So many amazing upgrades, live music sometimes, great bar atmosphere, and they now allow reservations plus electrical tent camp sites!
Paddle was absolutely beautiful. Kayaks were low quality. Almost impossible to control. Paddles were very poor quality. The drip rings were loose thus water still ended up on the lap. Landing point: we were NOT instructed where the take out point was. We had to guess. One paddler got out to see if it was the right spot. Water was very swift. To be cont:
Sites were overpriced. Some sites don't have a fire pit. River is great. Scenery was awesome.
Great place to camp. Labor day weekend they had great music for the weekend.and sounds like they will do it again next year!!
Crazy high prices now that it has changed owners. Customer service lacked personal warmth and friendliness. Came every year for 10 years and probably won't be going back
We took a trip to Iowa for my son’s 6th Birthday to find Geodes, stones, and Fossils. We traveled from Wisconsin not really knowing what to expect and chose Randy’s once we got to the Decorah area. We passed a few campgrounds along the way that looked very busy and we were looking for a more secluded campground & site. This place was amazing! So beautiful along the River with the bluffs. The electric sites are set back further, but we stayed along the River. We stayed from a Sunday-Wednesday and it was perfectonly about 5 other campsites filled during our stay. Walking the river-the water was low, searching for fossils, catching crayfish, fishing, relaxing in the hammock, sitting around the campfire. Loved the experience, and everyone was so nice!
Rented canoes on a beautiful summer day. I didn't call ahead but you probably should for a Saturday or holiday weekend because they will sell out. The bar was busy Sunday before noon even and no frills, and the people were very friendly. The river trip is not to be missed. It was one of the best rivers I've canoed down. Ever. Scenery was breathtaking, river was calm but with a good current, and on the upper part we didn't see a building or person for an hour and a half. They have multiple options for trips, up to 6+ hours. The service and shuttle were excellent. We will be back - probably to canoe and camp!
