Pillar and Post Inn & Spa

About

The Pillar and Post is a landmark hotel in the heart of Niagara on the Lake. It combines modern amenities within a historic setting.

Story

Pillar and Post's original structure was built in the late 1890s as a canning factory, and since has been lovingly transformed into a fine Niagara on the Lake hotel. You can still see its original purpose in the clean lines of the brick walls and in the impressive post-and-beam construction.

The hotel has a relaxed elegance with sunshine streaming in through skylights, beautiful terra cotta tile floors, indoor and outdoor pools, and an exotic hot springs pool at 100 Fountain Spa, #1 spa in Canada (Spas of America 2011).

With our prime location in Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country, attentive service and commitment to the comfort of our guests, Pillar and Post is an ideal location for a romantic spa getaway, business meeting or a family vacation.

Pillar and Post is certainly very quaint. However, it is advertised as a 5 star country inn and to live up to that rating needs to step it up a bit. I see that one other commenter wrote that there was complimentary wine in the room. We did not receive that benefit and that was one touch that I thought should be included to make this place a true 5 star inn. They give you the glasses and the ice bucket but no wine. Turn down service includes a rose for the ladies. Very nice. I had to call maintenance to fix a couple small items that housekeeping should have alerted them to. They were fixed immediately. The bathroom had been remodeled but the room looked dated. I had prime rib at their restaurant. It was very tasty but only a half inch thick (I've never seen a cut so thin). The bar was mediocre but the staff was excellent. The breakfast "buffet" was very good and a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Make certain you visit the spa and the hot tub in the spa. It is available to all hotel guests but certainly out of site and you might miss it because you didn't know.

As soon as we arrived a very cheerful person, Sherry, invited my wife and I for some wine, awesome. Great staff, very polite. Room is cute and clean. However, ordered a cheese/fruit plate (cheese plate came with jam), but no knife. Our wine was mixed up, that was fixed promptly. But being in Ontario's wine country, and being charged $100 for the bottle, one would expect to have proper wine glasses and not the banquet generic ones. Front desk team did their best to fix that, but unfortunately delivered what looks like water glasses. Overall, nice place, but over priced and more attention to detail is needed.

My husband and I visited the 100 Fountain Spa at the Pillar and Post hotel for the first time today. I’ve been to numerous spas in many countries and if this is the best spa that Niagara-on-the-Lake has to offer, then that’s a shame. If this place was your first spa experience, you might like it. But if you’ve ever been to a real spa, you’ll know right away this isn’t a great place worth revisiting. The check in process was fine, but as soon as we went down the stairs we could see that the spa was very busy. The ladies change room is extremely small, (which they do mention on their website). The worst part is that there was only one bench for anyone to put their items on. When I arrived to get changed there were about eight other ladies in there who were finishing up and had their stuff everywhere, leaving me with nowhere besides my locker to put anything while I changed. The robe I was provided was missing one of the side loops (it was ripped off) so my sash was constantly on the floor getting wet especially when I had it hung up on the hooks at the hot springs (pooling water on the floor). There was also a very large stain on the arm. Speaking of hot springs, their “hot springs” is just a large hot tub surrounded by greenery. It is in no way a hot springs. Also, the water feature wasn’t on the first time we went into the hot springs, but the second time we went in about 1.5 hour later it was on, but wasn’t very useful. The dry sauna, while nice and large, had a used band aid on the floor. It was there the first time we used the sauna as well as the second time. Which tells me staff don’t pop their heads in during the day to make sure the area is clean. Another issue is that the dry sauna and indoor pool/hot tub were upstairs. So you had to walk upstairs battling traffic both ways to go from those areas to the lounge or treatment rooms. The indoor pool and hot tub were fine, standard pool and hot tub. The steam rooms were located in the change rooms. There were no hooks outside of the steam room for your robe, but luckily the showers were right beside the steam room so everyone used those hooks. Not so good if someone needed the shower though since all the hooks were used by the people using the steam room. The women’s steam room door had instructions on how to push the button and that the room could take about 10 minutes to steam up. In the men’s change room however, no such sign was provided and my husband mentioned to me that the steam room smelled like a hockey dressing room. The relaxation room was lacking the quiet aura of a relaxation room. We stopped by there on three occasions and only were able to find seats once. Plus the fresh fruit that was provided was only apples that had seen better days. My reflexology was the best part of the experience. My husband had a massage, and mentioned it was in no way a great massage - especially when you’re paying for an RMT. The spa does provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the showers as well as q-tips, hair dryer and little bags for your swimsuit. But no deodorant or hair product. Overall, while some portions of the spa were nice, it isn’t worth the money, especially when the spa is that over-crowded and noisy. The atmosphere isn’t conducive to relaxation.

We had brunch here as a large group and they have a wonderfully large restaurant that can accommodate large groups easily. The lobby and restaurant were beautiful and cozy. The breakfast buffet food was excellent with a wide variety of options. We were very impressed. Would definitely recommend.

When you want an exquisite retreat from everyday life to rest and reconnect with your partner, there is no better place than here. Bathroom cleanliness could be improved for the cost/hotel rating. But otherwise in this area you have history, charm, quiet...coupled with many wine/beer tasting options, theatre, even outdoor walks taking photos. Wonder-full.
