North & Navy

About

North & Navy is a northern Italian kitchen inspired by the bacari of Venice.

Story

On practically every calle, salizada and ruga in Venice, you’ll find a Bacaro – a casual place to grab a glass of wine or Prosecco and a bite to eat, known as “cichèti.”

Bacari are Italy’s answer to the pub, and cichèti are the Italian answer to Spanish tapas. Italians have an answer for everything.

Our Bacaro upholds the Italian tradition of togetherness. It’s the perfect place to meet friends after work, or to share a casual glass of sparkling wine and a small bite to eat.

Well good news and bad news. The bad news is that the place tries embarrassingly hard to be classy by offering a menu that's some weird Italian and English mix so people generally only have a faint idea of what the food is (If you want to be authentic with your menu, go hard or go home). The waiter will have you taste your wine first but will only explain the menu second (even if you request an explanation a couple times in advance) which does not allow you to pair your meal choice with your wine choice accordingly. The waiter will then condescendingly explain every. single. option of the menu even if you only had a couple questions. THE GOOD NEWS is that the decor is super cute, the food is delicious, the staff are generally nice, and if you don't care about all of the "bad things" mentioned before, you'll have a great time.

Some people may find the place a little small but I prefer this cozy atmosphere combined with their unique twist on Italian fare. The food is amazing. Go for a variety of the many small plates or order one of their generous mains. You won't be disappointed. We had a counter seat with a view of the kitchen. Highly entertaining.

I emailed North and Navy to to discuss our experience but never received a response . My husband and I booked a special date night online. No standard tables were available so we settled on a high top since we'd heard such great things about the restaurant. When we arrived, the host directed us to choose two seats at the bar. We stood there silently, looking confused, and the host told us dismissively that we had reserved a high top - which was the bar. I sat down and reviewed the open table reservation which clearly gives choices between bar and high top. I have nothing against sitting at the bar, but we would have chosen to visit North and Navy at another time as we'd pictured a table for two for our special evening - not seats in a line. Perhaps this is an issue with Open Table, in which case I hope they address it. I'd like to think the host was just confused but he spent the evening checking in with the kitchen, staff, and guests so I assume he is familiar with the restaurant's seating. We were bothered by the way he spoke to us and we started our evening feeling pretty apprehensive. The other staff we interacted with were all wonderful, particularly our server, Vincent, who was kind, helpful, and attentive. The food was also good, especially the burrata salad.

I had a good meal here, my favourite dish was the mushroom pasta. The sauce was wonderful. The dish I would skip next time is the Polpette appetizer (meatballs). The server recommended them so we had high hopes but there were only 3 on the plate and they tasted like regular meatballs in tomato sauce that I’d serve with pasta. They didn’t pack the punch I was hoping for from an expensive appetizer!

I love food and have experienced food from a wide variety of countries. We also love to cook and often just eat at home because we know our food will taste better then what we can get at a restaurant (not always though, of course). Anyways we reserved a table ahead of time, but was given a round table in a corner where we both sat on a bench. Not pleased already. Service was slow and I noticed that tables with large groups had gathered were receiving more attention and much faster service then us. In fact groups arriving after us were served before us???? I guess servers play the who will tip the most game. The food was good to very good. I had the duck and the side was a mix of pomegranate seeds with walnuts and such. The walnuts were stale. Nouvelle style cuisine where you get a few morsels for way too much money. We were 2 at our table with tip cost us $269 with drinks. At this price I would expect to be treated like a king (which I was not) and I expect to be absolutely wowed by the food - which I was not. Sorry this is way way way over priced for almost great food and mediocre service. I will not be back!
