Milpa is at the top of my list for best restaurant experiences since moving to the city. It took about 20 mins for us to be acknowledged at our table when we first sat down, but as it's a brand new restaurant, that is popular and busy, we were completely understanding of this. The food came out quickly and was incredible. The coconut ceviche was my favourite of the evening. We ordered 4 dishes total and found that was plenty for 2 people. We were not a fan of the ice cream dessert we ordered, but I can't say it was bad, just not to our tastes. Our server was also super personable, decor was on point and 95% of the menu is gluten free!! Dinner for 2 4 dishes, plus 2 drinks was about $115. Will definitely be back! For things that were "negatives" 1. Food is way overpriced for size portions 2. Messy dishes. Two were very soupy and could not be finished with the chips/tortillas they were served with. 3. It was incredibly loud and felt like we were shouting 4. Smaller space, so not a lot of "privacy" at table Dietary restrictions: Lots of GF options
Milpa is the true definition of authentic Mexican cuisine : from the quality of the food, presentation and overall service I was very impressed. I felt for a brief moment I was back in Mexico. Every dish and every bite you can taste and feel the love. I highly recommend this restaurant to all foodies
I was so looking forward to trying the food here, being from Mexico, I always look forward to trying the food of my people. It was good, the decor is beautiful and the staff is great and friendly. The coctail de camarón. Tasty, though shrimp was a little dry. We got some Korean crackers with it, which was odd with it. It seemed like it needed something more, avocado or something. Coconut ceviche was good, definitely a new take on ceviche, very soupy, it needed more jicama or something else. Pescadilla empanadas, were ok, very crunchy, definitely new, I have never had crunchy empanadas, anywhere. Quesabirria tacos were good. Rajas were good, I make them often, but I know they are better using corn cob instead of canned corn. The Frida cocktail was great, I tried the Paloma and I was sad it wasn't fizzy at all. The Tres Leches cake was so dry, we hiked about it perhaps it only had 1 or 2 leches, so pretty sad for that too. Overall, food was good, not in a rush to go back for a while, but I hope dishes get better as it's still pretty new. And, our server was amazing. Vegetarian options: Coconut ceviche.
Great first visit at Milpa. Energetic ambiance + genuinely kind staff. We tried: 1 Salsa tasting 4/5 2 Tres Marias 5/5 3 Coconut ceviche 5/5 - so creative! It reminded me Thai flavors 4 Pescadilla 5/5 5 Raja Poblanos 5/5 6 Quesabirria 5/5 - tasty! 7 Saturn cocktail 5/5 - very refreshing All were very well executed with balanced flavors Our 2nd visit confirmed the excellence of the restaurant. We added to our checklist the Cataluna75 and Felix Maria cocktails, the mixiote lamb and the panuchos. The ceviche and quesabirria were consistently good. We finished with the fruity Carlota de limon. 3rd visit: A must-try is the chipotle capeado, absolutely fantastic... an explosion of flavours! Go for the manzana verde cocktail if you like the apple brightness. Summary: Milpa is perfect for foodies going on a date night. Vibrant and delicious.
A great place with a good menu. It mixes elegant plating and flavour with a social atmosphere and fair pricing. I was impressed with the quality of food and service. Definitely a place to return to.
It was nice to experience authentic Mexican cuisine that offers a different twist on Mexican food than other local Latino restaurants in Calgary. Overall, the food was flavorful and the waitstaff extremely knowledgeable about the menu despite the restaurant being recently launched. The Coconut Cerviche was a refreshing appetizer to start our meal. We especially enjoyed the Quesabirria and the amazingly delicious consomme! Highly recommended! Our group of three ordered two cold dishes, four hot dishes, and one dessert. A word of caution on the salsa sampler...the two spicy ones were too spicy for us even though we thought we had a good spice tolerance. The one extremely spicy one burned for a long time. The decor was very trendy and lighting was comfortable. However, the music was too loud for us to be able to hold a conversation. We sat at a table for four and we had to yell across the table the entire night. Being new, the washrooms were immaculate and so bright...which I appreciate! Make sure you lock the washroom door properly as one of the locks is a little tricky!
Decent experience overall All staff were welcoming and friendly, service was good. Still some growing pains with serving; it took a really long time to be offered a drink after being sat, despite the place being near-empty. With more time I’m sure it will improve. Presentation of the food is an easy 5 stars. The patatas bravas were good, but nothing special, and really unreasonably priced for 7 baby potatoes. The Queso birria was extremely underwhelming, they mostly tasted of beef, and it feels like they didn’t even want it to be on the menu but it’s too trendy not to have. The guacamole is really good and I like the variety of chips they gave for dips. Both types of tortillas are really great. We found the prices too high, even compared with neighbouring 17th Ave restaurants. Queso fundido was good but it’s pretty hard to go wrong with melted cheese and chorizo. Also we came in right at opening and the bathrooms were pretty dirty. Cleaning bathrooms sucks, I know, but it should be clean at open at least.
When I heard the chef at this new upscale Mexican place was from Top Chef Mexico, I had to come check it out. We enjoyed our night here, the vibe of the place is very cool. Music was good, mix of Latin, rap and house music while we were there. The cocktails we sampled the old fashioned and an off menu spicy margarita were both excellent, but the margarita was a stand out - would definitely recommend asking for this. Drinks are on the expensive side, so more of a one drink with dinner kind of place. For food we had the tres Marias, stewed chicken tacos, quesabirra, queso fundido, and potatoes. The chicken tacos were unforgettable - I would eat these every single day for the rest of my life and be happy. The trio of dips was also quite good - a little different than your usual dip selection, you can tell each item on the plate is so well thought out. The food is all small plates so you have to order quite a few, but the food is quite reasonably priced for the value. Loved our evening out here - perfect for date night.
The waitress was super kind and told us what was popular and her recommendations after we told her we are "pescatarian" we eat meat but when it's not a halal restaurant pescatarian it is. The restaurant is in downtown and when you enter it definitely has a vibe of its own. It's not cheap but my partner and I ordered about 5 dishes total and shared and were both full by the end. I would definitely recommend it for a date night! But not a place I’d go to often. Note--We LOVED the tostada de atun Vegetarian options: Pescatarian friendly but idk about vegan, there was only 1-2 vegan dishes I think
I went for a quick snack with my sister and thought the restaurant was absolutely gorgeous inside! We ordered a horchata, espresso martini, tostada and quesabirria tacos. They were all delicious but the portions are very small and it’s very expensive. I think it’s a cute place to go for a date though!
