A local spot that I recently discovered, not sure how long it has been opened for but I'm sure not too long. Basically has all day dimsum excluding the crepe items, but full dim sum menu till 3pm. The quality is incomparable combined with the time it takes for food to come out and the service. Absolutely remarkable
Easy to find Chinese restaurant that is located along Macleod Trail, with plenty of parking space. It is adjacent to another eatery called Tea Chat Cafe, which had its own menu set but with a more casual vibe they get bonus points in my book for having congee. They've undergone a few renovations in the past, and it has improved the layout of the place. The interior is bright, clean, and spacious. Great for bringing in large groups of people together. It can be a bit daunting to pick since they have a big menu selection, but there are a few that stood out. The crab and fish maw soup offers an interesting chewy texture and goes well with red vinegar. The Ma Po tofu is not as spicy as I expected, more on the milder side, but still had enough flavour. The snow pea leaves were my favorite vegetable to order, since they are tender and tasty without any bitterness. You can also buy frozen handmade dumplings for you to cook and enjoy at home. A great place to go if you want to share family sized dishes that is delicious and affordable with large groups of people.
I don't understand the bad reviews regarding the food at this place, it's one of the best Chinese food I've had in Calgary! However, the bad reviews because of the service are understandable. We went on a Sunday at lunch time and the place was fully packed, we waited like 15-20 min to get seated and the food took a long time to arrive, so don't come here if you are extremely hungry. We asked for extra spoons because we were sharing the congee and they brought just one and we were three and it was impossible to flag the girl down again. They are too busy, they have a lot of tables. But putting aside the bad service, the food was just incredible. The big portions took us -pleasantly- by surprise, usually at Dim Sum places you have to order a lot and so we did, but we couldn't finish and we really over ate. Everything was made to order, all the food came pipping hot, crispy, full of flavour, and just perfect! We order 9 items and liked them all, but the big crowd favorite was the Fried Beef Ho Fan noodles.
We came here for an early lunch on Sunday and the food selection was good and everything arrived hot. We had a selection of usual steamed dumplings, tripe, crepes, congee, buns and a few fried items squid and dough. The charcoal buns were the table favourite for sweet and the soup dumplings were the savoury winner. Service was reasonably attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely be back for dim sum another time.
I’ve driven past M Palace a couple of times now, so I jumped at the chance to eat there when my mom chose it for her birthday dinner. First impression is how clean and white the restaurant is. Bright with high ceilings, they’ve removed all traces of the family chain restaurant it used to be. Service was efficient and friendly the entire time we were there. Mind you, it was a Tuesday night and there were only a few tables occupied. That being said, the staff went above and beyond to make sure that we had a fabulous meal and were never left wanting anything. Now the food...WOW! The four of us got the $88 dinner special: 1 complimentary kabocha squash broth with beans and dried mussels sounds gross/tastes great! 2 bbq pork and duck platter so well marinated and tasty with a nice crispy skin on the duck 3 pork soup dumplings my dad said they were better than the famous Din Tai Fung, which I can’t vouch for, but wow these were fantastic 4 fried beancurd with asparagus I’m not a tofu lover but this was a great dish! 5 sweet and sour pork that came in a half pineapple my fave and this totally impressed with a nice light batter and perfect sauce! 6 pork belly and preserved vegetables the perfect compliment to a bowl of white rice 7 charcoal custard buns filed with a warm sweet and eggy liquid our server said that they were actually black sesame, but I couldn’t taste that...still good! 8 complimentary peanut dessert soup too full at this point to enjoy it, but I’m sure it was tasty Bottom line? 9/10 service 9/10 food 8/10 ambiance, decor and cleanliness Most definitely our new favourite Chinese restaurant based on this meal! We can’t wait to go back!
This new double Restaurant offers people in the deep south a place to enjoy Chinese food in a dining room setting and/or in a Hong Kong style cafe restaurant. I will admit the food is a bit oily and salty... so before you order place tell the servers to let the chefs know to go light on both. The Restaurant I clean and organized as it should be.
A great new proper Chinese food restaurant in the South. It's taken over the old White Spot on MaCleod. The restaurant is spacious, and bright and is more contemporary than typical Chinese restaurants of this type. Service is excellent and the food is very good and presented beautifully. For Chinese food of this kind, 'Wok Hey', or the heat produced by the wok into the food is very important and here, you can certainly taste it in the food. Portions are pretty good as well. Prices are also very comparable to the prices you would find in Chinatown, which is atypical for a Chinese restaurant outside of the core. Parking is plentiful and the facilities are well kept. They will also be opening another section specializing in HK style cuisine and bubble tea. Hopefully it will open Ina few more weeks. Give this place a try, you won't regret it. Update Jan 13, 2019 Came for for dim sum, and the food again was very good. It's gets pretty busy so get here early. They sold out of a few items while we were here but I'll chalk that up to opening issues. Still one of the best alternative for proper Chinese cuisine in the South.
The building itself is modern and looks great for a dinner party. We went for dim sum and were forgotten in the side corner of the restaurant with no one else in the section. We came with a toddler and not offered highchair. Anytime we needed anything, we had to stand at the till. Our last order was also not punched in so we so we spend the last 20min waiting around for food that wasn't coming out. The food was really good and pricing typical. The lava buns are very grammable. Probably wouldnt go back for dim sum.. I'll try again for dinner in hopes of a better experience. Service slow, customer service poor. Food authentic.
Update: March 2019, the service is a hit or miss and only 2-3 waitresses were friendly to talk despite the language barrier. The last few visits I had were subpar to say the least. While the food was fine, the service overall left a negative experience that I will only be visiting as a last resort for a good Chinese food crave. Otherwise, I would be willing to go to Chinatown for amazing dishes. Also the servers kept complaining why I tip too low, it was an awkward moment. We went here for dinner, and the general impression was good. Mostly white and vaulted ceiling with some exposed vented ducts for added height and character. This establishment can be dined 2 ways cafe side or restaurant side, and I've only been to the restaurant side. The waiter was friendly, fast, and was able to answer our questions regarding their menu. The free soup that came with was a nice touch as it reminded me of a Philippine pork stew dish. We ordered Fish fillet Basa fish with asparagus, Tobiko fried rice, mapo doufu, and spicy chicken pot. All of the dishes were good, but I've had better taste with mapo doufu not spicy, perhaps it's their style. The Tobiko fried rice wasn't as tasty as I would hope. The rest of the dishes were great, no complaints. Overall, I would come back again to try new dishes, the cafe side and their dim sum. I also tried their hot brown sugar milk tea with grass jelly and it was good, but I prefer a tiny less sweet. That's just my preference, but for the average customer; it is fine.
Finally a decent Dim Sum place in the SE. Not the best in the city but good enough where I would definitely return to eat again. They have a lot of variety for Din Sum and dinner entrees. My favourite by far was their Lava Charcoal Bun. Ive been waiting for a place in Calgary to have this and it didn’t disappoint. From the ones I ordered that I didn’t like were the gai lan veggies, tasted bland for such an expensive price $18 . The tiger shrimp wrapped in crepe was also mediocre, wish they made the crepe thinner. Everything else I would order again.
