A hidden gem in Dutchess County! I’ve lived here all my life and have never been to Locust Grove until now. I did not tour the home because I went on a Tuesday no tours, but I was able to walk the trails which were gorgeous! The trails are not the most flat, so be prepared to go “hiking” and wear good shoes. Even if you aren’t the hiking type like me! they are very pretty to walk on and you will be glad you did it! I will definitely be stopping by again to try one of the other trails & to tour the house.
Lovely place to go for a walk. Please note, the dogs are only allowed if you are a member or purchase a day pass. Otherwise entry is free. There are beautiful gardens right behind the visitor center and from there is several paths lead down toward the Hudson river. There are a number of benches where you can rest and admire the amazing views.
I gotta say: I was impressed! So much history I didn’t expect! The grounds are resplendent with magnificent gardens and verdant grass and amazing views, and it’s all very accessible I used my walker. Others used canes.nnA lovely place to take a walk nice because there were no dogs and they must be leashed if here, and I even “brought” my students virtually for a tiny field trip.nnI love the gift shop too, and the creative ways the team comes up with for fundraising.nnI had no idea that Mr Morse’ dad wrote geography books, or that Mr Morse was a painter before he became a famous inventor! Such fascinating history!nnAlso, just a really gorgeous, peaceful place, and I’m glad it exists.
We enjoyed Locust Grove through a private wedding reception. Although early in the year the lilacs were budding.nnThe facility is amazing and the architecture is cool. We enjoyed the view of the valley as well as the other mansions on the property.nnEasy to get to, and in and out of. We would visit here again, after spring has fully sprung.
We were here on a recent trip when our plans were altered due to a river cruise being cancelled at the last minute and having to make new plans. Our host at our B&B suggested it.nUnfortunately we were not able to tour the house that day. We were told that since covid there is a shortage volunteers and since we were leaving the next day we couldn't make it work.nWe did however, tour the gallery on the grounds as well as the grounds and managed to see the outside of the house. The Gallery alone is worth the visit as that part is free and there are a number of his paintings as well as examples of his inventions and a lot of history. The house looks interesting from the outside and we talked with the caretaker who gave us a lot of history as well. We are sure to tour the house on our next visit.
