I lived at 238 Sydney Street from birth until age 16 and left the Island over 31 years ago. I'd heard our old house had been converted to a B&B and, while I'd driven by it on various trips to PEI, and had wanted to see it, I felt I would have be gently rebuffed had I asked to have a look-see.
When visiting this past summer (August 2009), my daughter and I needed accommodation for one night. I thought if I was looking to procure a room for the night, 238 Sydney was the obvious choice and, I would have solid grounds for requesting a tour.
I will not take the time to describe all of what occurred when I arrived at Joan's door and asked if she had a room available for that Thursday night. As soon as I told her I'd grown up in that house (actually, the other side of the house - it's a duplex), I was treated as if I were royalty! :-) To say my welcoming was warm would be a gross understatement!
The tour I'd long yearned for was finally happening and Joan could not have been more animated, interested and accommodating. I loved her immediately! We spent about an hour, discussing my life there, how she'd acquired the building, what it had been like during my residency, and all she'd done to it since acquiring it approximately 20 years ago.
My 19-year old daughter, who has always expressed a very keen interest in my formative years was over the moon when I told her we'd be staying in the house in which I'd grown up.
We stayed in what was the last bedroom I'd been in when we moved. I had shared it with my mother. It's a bit smaller now as a closet has been added and the former alcove-like closet has been either boarded or plastered over. The windows are still original, as is the bathroom and several other elements I'd thought would be long gone. The kitchen (on what was our side of the house) is very different but this is where Joan serves her marvelous breakfast to guests and its former design would not have been conducive.
The thing that surprised me most was that the barn was still in the backyard. What seemed so huge and mysterious to me as a child now appears so tiny and almost play-house like.
Joan has done an incredible job with her restorative efforts. While it's not like it was when I lived there, I think she has achieved a very good representation of what it could and perhaps should have been.
On my next trip to PEI, I will most definitely be haunting Heart's Content again. I hope to be able to stay in the room I shared with my two brothers for about 10 years.
Joan, if you read this, I think of you often. Thank you so very much for you kindness and interest in my memories of the house. I cannot say enough about your warmth, caring and graciousness. You are definitely one in a million and I couldn't imagine anyone better to take care of my home...
