Dim sum was delicious and portions were generous for the price. Highly recommend the dumplings, rice rolls and steamed chicken feet, spareribs and beef tendon! Despite the restaurant being newly opened and was packed at the time, service was friendly and relatively quick for soft opening
Soft opening, so some hiccups. Staff were a bit disorganized, even unsure of the menu, but earnestly working hard. The dishes were good overall, but probably need a bit fine tuning. A bit too sweet or a bit bland. It's what you might expect from a HK café. It used to be a Swiss Chalet and you can see the framework of that restaurant but they've made some updates. Parking: It's now using a parking lot where Earls and Swiss Chalet were, so there's a lot of parking.... for now.
Finally a local Brentwood area Burnaby HK "Daa Laang" Cafe that's legit. Cool concept as they have a dim sum section and cafe section. Food is great value and portion size. Noodle soup could feed 2 people and the baked dishes are tasty and good value for money. Will be coming back more often since they are open late!
The restaurant is divided into two sections: HK style cafe and dim sum/BBQ. It was Sunday morning so we went for dim sum. The dim sum section was packed. Food was pretty standard, but I enjoyed it. Decent portions and the wait wasn’t long. Service was not bad for being a new restaurant.
I don't think anyone should take this review as a permanent opinion on this restaurant. We came around 3pm on a Sunday and it was completely packed. So I understand why everything feels incredibly rushed. In my picture of a half eaten bolognese, you can see that the cheese isn't properly broiled. It's just kind of melted. The unfortunate thing here is that you can taste more pork than beef in their meat sauce. It never states what meat is used in their sauce but one can assume it's suppose to beef over pork. In fact all the food weren't hot just warm at best. I think it's because they needed space in their ovens for their orders. I will come back to try their soup noodles and dim sum soon.
Great breakfast also …. Don’t miss it !!! Beautiful New location, same owner of the one before …..excellent service and culinary . Now dim sum and Hong Kong cafe …. Fantastic … Dishes are delicious, generous quantity and good price It is a place to repeat constantly !!!
First HK cafe in North Burnaby that I know of and very happy it's here. For a soft opening, the service was quick and friendly. Menu was okay for lunch, but no all day breakfast 8-11am. Food was decent. Again for the first one in the area, I am not too picky. HK milk tea was strong and tasty too.Food: 4/5
Great price, good quality and solid service. Lots of parking! Silky milk tea. Breakfast plate for $9! Noodle bowl for $12 that can feed 3 people!
Food was mediocre and the portions were disappointing. It's bland and put together without gusto. I like the decor and it's better than the average HK style cafe.Food: 3/5
Ok I am going to go with a 3 star. Brand spanking new. A bit disorganized. Called about 4 times to try to make a reservation but each time it went directly to voicemail. So made a point to go in to reserve. When you reserve they ask you which side. Apparently they have the restaurant split up into diff sections servicing different food. The menus have different names: wonder house and happy valley HK cafe which together make up Happy Valley Food City. Very confusing to be honest! As I didn’t know what the difference was I asked for menus. The gentleman in the front gave me a dinner one and a BBQ one. I looked on the podium table and there were about 3-4 additional menus so I grabbed those too. Honestly not sure which side I booked for as I pointed to the one that had “dinner” starting at 5pm. Although it’s all the same kitchen so why not serve all the food no matter where you are sitting? So if one section is busy and another that serves different food is not does that mean people will have to wait to eat at the busy sections? When we arrived and told them we had resos they once again asked which side ‍ and once again I had no idea! Lol We ordered: 1 chicken and salted fish fried rice. Wasn’t bad but could have used more salt. Ordered large size 2 deep friend fish - this dish was done really well 3 seafood crispy chow mein. Had a good amount of seafood shrimp, fish & squid. Noodles were crispy, BUT there was no flavouring in the sauce. Added some of the garlic etc from the fish . Ordered large size ~ $22. It’s listed on another menu too but that is a personalized size ~ $16 4 steak bites - wasn’t bad 5 Steak/rice - son thought it was a baked rice with sauce but it was a bowl of rice and a steak in a sizzling platter with some veggies and sauce. Also came with a drink. This was apparently good. Came to $120 before tip. Decent pricing. Took about 30 min for the steak bite dish to come out. Then another 30ish minutes for the rest to come out steak was eaten by then 3 kids ranging from 15-19 rated it 4.5-5/10. Comment was bland. They only liked the fish dish. 2 adults rated 6.5-7/10 Might give it another try later down the road when they iron out the kinks. Sorry, didn’t take photo of everything as family gets tired/annoyed of waiting for me to take a pic!
