Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre

Story

The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are a pair of stacked theatres located at 189 Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Winter Garden Theatre is seven storeys above the Elgin Theatre. They are the last surviving Edwardian stacked theatres in the world.Early historyThe pair of theatres were originally built as the flagship of Marcus Loew's theatre chain in 1913. The building was designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb, who also designed the Ed Mirvish Theatre nearby. Both theatres were built to show vaudeville acts and the short silent movies of the time. Each theatre was intended to compete in a different market. The gold-and-marble, domed, 'hard-top' lower theatre (originally called Loew's Yonge Street Theatre) was home to continuous vaudeville and movies. The upper-level Winter Garden is an 'atmospheric' country garden under the stars. The upper theatre was built for the 'Big Time' vaudeville market and had reserved seats at premium prices, catering to the upper middle class. As well as competing in a different market, the upper theatre could be used for experimentation with acts, without the risk of closing the lower theatre.By 1928, feature-length silent films were popular, but sound films were just coming into their own. In 1928, the lower theatre was converted to show sound films and the upper theatre was closed. The Winter Garden remained shuttered for about sixty years. Left inside it was a large collection of vaudeville flats and scenery, now the world's largest surviving collection. In 1969, Loews sold the Elgin to Famous Players. By the 1970s, the Elgin was showing mainly B movies and soft-core pornography.

Lovely venue! I lucked out and got my hands on balcony seat tickets to see my favourite artist Charlotte Cardin and it was incredible. Easily the best seats in the theatre in my opinion as there’s only 4 chairs on each balcony and it was spacious, private and excellent view of the stage.
The decor and ambiance are beautiful. I love this place with all its pageantry. You get lost in its history and easy to envision Toronto's past. The drinks are reasonably priced they don't gouge. The staff is very nice and helpful. When you're there you may even see the odd star of Murdoch Mysteries.
The grandeur, the old world charm, the romantic fairytale like setting I can’t praise this place enough! I loved it! Felt like I was part of an old Shakespearean play like Romeo and Juliette or a midsummer nights dream!
We went there as part of doors open event. It was the most spectacular theatre i have ever seen. It is so well maintained and the volunteers were so warm and engaging. Riding up the original elevators, learing how bread dough was used to clear up dirt from the walls to preserve the paint, viewing the Elgin hall and the winter gardens was all simply a spectacular experience.
Visited for Doors Open. All staff were very knowledgeable and clearly worked at the theatre for a period of time. Would love to visit for a performance
Came here to see the Indonesian Cultural festival put on by a visiting school. Friendly and polite ushers, decently clean, and an interesting space.
Great into to the opera. It’s a great theatre and you can park across the street at Eaton centre.
Peter's final fight was a super fun show! Had a blast! I'm going to miss Ross Petty as Captain Hook booo.
Beautiful theatre. We saw Ross Petty's final production, and it was an emotional night. My kids have been going to his show for more than 15 years. Sharing his last performance with them was magical. Thank you Ross Petty for bringing this amazing musical to our lives.
