Story

El Cortez Mexican Kitchen + Tequila Bar specializes in modern latin food and tequila. Our menu encompasses everything from tapas, to traditional latin entrees, to gourmet street foods & tacos, to nuevo latino fusion dishes.

We are proud to carry over 140 different tequilas and mezcals which are all 100% agave and have been selected for their unique and delicious qualities. El Cortez is also 1 of 9 bars in the world to have earned an authentication by the Tequila Regulatory Council in Guadalajara.

In addition to our large selection of tequilas, we have a vibrant craft cocktail program, as well as a selection of beers, wines, and other spirits.

The main floor is a restaurant & lounge open 7 days/week while the tequila cellar basement is a space to continue the late night fun and dancing alongside DJ's on the weekends. The tequila cellar is a perfect space to host private parties for groups anywhere from 2 to 100.

Since August 2014 El Cortez hosted the following live “secret” shows: Matt Mays, Raine Maida & Chantal Kreviazuk, SIIINES, Tiga, Lindi Ortega, Shawn Hook, Lyra Brown, Jimmy Gnecco and others.

We look forward to having you!

For reservations up to 8 people please go to our website to book. www.elcortezcantina.com. For any reservation over 8 people or for specific party bookings, please email [email protected]

Annnd just for fun, here's an El Cortez Fable......

Little is known of Edmonton's El Cortez... Some say it has been in the city for years, while others say it does not exist at all... The only known evidence of it's existence is an abstruse interview between El Diablo and an unnamed Horseman.

The following is a transcript of the interview, which took place in an undisclosed location, at an unknown date, somewhere in Edmonton, Canada. The conversation lasted exactly 6 minutes, El Diablo permitted the horseman to ask him 6 questions, and during the interview, El Diablo drank 6 shots of tequila.

The interview...

Horseman: What brings you to Edmonton?

El Diablo: The El Cortez...And the beautiful women

Horseman: What is the El Cortez?

El Diablo: The El Cortez is freedom. It is expression. And it's a great place to grab a taco.

Horseman: And the women? Tell me about them...

El Diablo: Tequila + Women = Sexo

Horseman: Tequila?

El Diablo: El Cortez is a tequila bar, you idiot.

Horseman: When is the world going to end?

El Diablo: The minute you grow up, and stop living.

Horseman: Ok, so where do I find "this" El Cortez?

El Diablo: You don't find the El Cortez... The El Cortez finds you...

Good was fantastic. Taco portions were a bit small compared to other places in Edmonton (giving two tacos instead of three) but the taste made it worth while. It's a fairly popular place so it can be extremely busy in the weekend, plan and reserve a table in advance if possible. The inside decor is unique and suits the overall ambiance of the restaurant.

I always enjoy the atmosphere of El Cortez. Its comparable to being in a medieval dungeon. I would praise it for being a nice change from the other bars on Whyte Ave. If you don't know someone who knows where it is, it can be close to impossible to find. This is due to it being located off the Ave, inside a restaurant, down a stairwell, in a basement. But once you're there, it's quite a cozy place. I do find it is often fairly unoccupied, so it's a great place if you have a big group. You'll make the party.

Super funky fresh Mexican restaurant and bar. Hipsters love it. Street artists painted it. My mother didn't hate it. Only suggestion is lose the plastic straws!! Or at least only provide when asked. They're clogging our oceans. Otherwise great vibe and friendly staff. Will return maybe with my husband next time :)

This was my first time here and we stopped for a drink. I was driving, i couldn't drink any alcohol and I was craving for a non-alcohol drink... i was craving for a Jarritos, and they were out, was craving for an ice tea and they were out too... but Shay went far beyond and prepared me the best lemonade i ever drank in my life! That was very nice from her doing this for me!

The decor was fun, I liked the old movies playing on the walls and the water served in empty tequila bottles. The food was delicious but my only issue was the portions. A 2oz portion for rice and beans? What you pay for the portions seemed way off. I don't like leaving a restaurant feeling hungry but I did here unfortunately.
