Clarington Public Library, Bowmanville Branch

The low rating reason is below otherwise the library itself is a solid five stars:nnThe library and book collection itself is beautiful but the staff...not so friendly unfortunately. I remember when I moved here a few years back the staff was really kind and welcoming and that creates a comfortable and positive environment for everyone. I heard the library is having renovations done and while that is great I think you need to consider changing the attitude of some of your staff members, especially at the front desk. They don't look up from what they are doing, greet, say hello or ask you if you need any help. Many times I am almost about to say hi but I hold back because their facial expressions are serious and demeanour are not very friendly so I don't. Believe me, part of libraries thriving and encouraging more patrons or individuals to attend is the front point of contact and atmosphere. If it's a welcoming and positive one then for sure more people will attend. As I child and up till now as an adult I have always loved going to the library and I support them . But just because of these negative vibes I have limited my visits. Please take this as friendly and constructive criticism as I mean well and I want to see my local library be successful.

The library itself is lovely and large. That said libraries are supposed to be quiet places where people can study and read in peace. Children's groups can be understood to create a bit of noise but the staff leave it entirely unchecked to the point where it can sound like more of an outdoor playground than a library Saturday mornings. Additionally, some members of the staff itself converse between themselves at normal conversational levels or louder from across the room instead of a more hushed tone befitting of the setting and respectful of the patrons trying to study or read. The facility is wonderful but there is a lack of etiquette that is both permitted and perpetuated by some of the staff.

Visted yesterday and let me tell you what:nnThis place was not quiet at all. Some homeless guy was fixing his motorcycle, some people at the front were complaining about their job I liked the drama , but the books were very good and organized!

Clarington library - Great place to borrow/read books. If we are interested in a book which is currently not present in the library, they also help us by putting a hold and getting the book .nBoard games like Catan, Monopoly etc also can be borrowed. Water fountains available.nStaff very helpful and friendly.nHighly recommend.

Their is no dedicated parking for this place. You may however park on the street, keep in mind that the street parking is metered only on weekdays until 5pm before its free. The street infront of the library does have accessability/veteran parking.nnYou do also have the option of a parking lot across the street on the corner to st. Paul. But also it's pay enforced by the municipality during the same hours of the street.nnThe library has books, movies , music, internet, desks, rooms. Three floors of cool things to peruse.nnTo checkout stuff you need to live in Clarington. You get a free library card. To replace your card it costs $2.
