Chilliwack Municipal Airport

Story

Chilliwack Airport, is located adjacent to Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.Airport facilitiesThe airport is used by private pilots and by commercial air operators. Servicing and modification facilities are available for single and twin engined aircraft.Chilliwack Flight FestEvery year in the last week of August the airport hosts an event known as the Chilliwack Flight Fest, a free air show for everyone to watch. The show is popular with families, and aviation enthusiasts are welcome to fly their own aircraft.Airport restaurantThe Airport Coffee Shop at the Chilliwack airport operated sporadically from the opening of the airport until it was purchased in the 1970s by Neil and Kathleen Mc Neill. As a recent retiree from the Canadian Forces as an army chef, he enticed pilots to land with fresh cooked meals. Pilots could radio ahead before landing and order a meal, similar to truck stop cafes of that era.The Mc Neills sold the Airport Coffee Shop in 1975, and the airport and the Airport Coffee Shop were torn down soon afterwards, replaced with a fully modern Airport. After remaining closed for several years, Barbara and Gordon Mitchell purchased the Airport Coffee Shop in 1980. Focusing on fresh homemade pies, roast turkey, and hamburgers, Barb and Gord became well known among pilots throughout Canada for their pies and cinnamon buns. COPA granted an honorary pair of pilot's wings to Barb in 1994 for her pies and "Food for Flying Folk".Barb continued to operate the Airport Coffee Shop with Gord, eventually opening a second restaurant called Devan's Restaurant. Devan's closed in the late 90s after Gord's death, but Barb continued to operate the Airport Coffee Shop along with her son, Jon, until 2008. After 28 years in the restaurant industry, Barb retired and sold the business to long-time employee Judi Good. Judi worked for Barb and Gord for 13 years prior to buying the restaurant with her two sisters, Jacqueline and Tracey.

We went to the 27th Annual Air show and it was an absolute blast!nI cannot believe that it's by donation and the runway is packed with spectators.nThings to remember to bringnSunscreennBig offnPicnicnChairsnSunglassesnCameranBinocularsnWaternAnd your cheery excited self.nWashrooms excellent well positioned.nLoved the Happy Panda rides too funnGreat to bring familiesnSeating anywhere excellent views no matter where you seat.nPretty clean as we were leaving a few pieces of litter but overall the carry in and you take out the same as you brought in was actually applied.nnI think there should have been absolute quiet and we all should have sang the national anthem.nnI also think we should have all been silent when the american anthem.nnThe venues were well laid out and the crowds seemed to be having a great time and no hassles and no policing go figure if this was Vancouver we would have a seat team..nNice to see we are able to all behave ourselves. Lol.nnEasy access plenty of parkingnThere is also an transit event bus that can take you from the park and ride.nnI felt bad for the announcers as you could not hear them. We moved to the east end and were nearest to the speakers. If they had a few more surrounding the strip I think you would get a better response from the spectators.nI hope the spectators know how hard a job these volunteers and pilots take to get this organized.nnMore cheering and thank you from the audience should have been louder.
Lovely, caring service, quiet and open space, so even when it’s busy it’s perfect for visiting a friend.nEnjoyed the butternut squash soup a cup is the size of a bowl at other places! My hubby had the roasted cauliflower soup with garlic toast.nI had the peach/raspberry pie, and our friend who eats there often took home pie - they are prepared for that with clear pie shaped containers. We’re from out of town, but we’ll go back.
Great! Wonderful staff! Showed where to park and tie down! Cool experience going from the Prairies to BC by small aircraft!
I didn’t get a chance to try the food but this airport is very clean, well maintained and peaceful!
I just love the Airport restaurant.nFriendly, fast service, and delicious food.nKeep up the good work!
