This is a magical place! We hiked down to the beach through the foggy, lush forest and had the whole thing to ourselves. The trail was very safe and well maintained. It was a short hike but going back up was fairly strenuous. There were two other hikes from the same starting point, can't wait to go back and do those too.

Cape Lookout is one of my favorite places to camp in the winter time. The campground is large and clean and has a lot of spots that are open in the off season. The cape is a great hike and a good place to whale watch or just see the sea. The beach is not crowded even in the summer and is a good place to walk.

GORGEOUS.
Came to the coast from Portland hoping to hike a different trail only to find it closed in the middle of the season. So, I ventured over to Cape Lookout State Park and am so glad I did. It was crazy busy as it was a Saturday at 10 am. Managed to find a parking spot though when I left the cars were lining the driveway on both sides and extending out to the road, so arriving early is key here.
There are 3 trails you can take, varying in intensity and location. I took the upper lookout trail which is around 5 miles round trip. There is also a South trail that takes you below the lookout point. Mostly a wooded hike, the end of the trail places you at the edge of the cape with 180 degree views of the ocean and adjacent coastline. Dog and family friendly, this trail is a must-do when visiting this part of the Oregon coast.

October - Lots of available spaces and and a beautiful empty beach.
This park may be crowded in the summer so October is the perfect time to visit.
Pros: Peace and quiet. Hot free showers, miles of empty beach, lots of nice vacant campsites, hiking trail to Cape Lookout. Safeway is just 15 minutes away.
Cons: Colder nights

The Day Use Area is great. There is a large parking area, easy walk to the beach and trails out to the Cape. They now have an easy to use parking system which allows you to use a card versus the old envelope system.
The camping area was outstanding. Many, not all, of the campsites, are larger so it does not feel like you are sleeping next to your neighbor's tent. As always the Ranger staff was top notch.
An added plus, they just repaved the county road to the Park. Previously the road was rough to drive, now it is a sweet smooth drive to the Park.
