What a great place! We moved our 96 year-old father in a month ago on the sixth floor. We were going to look at two retirement residences, but after viewing Barrieview first, we decided we did not have to look any farther. Karissa gave us a tour of the building and a couple of the rooms and was so patient in showing my father around. She put absolutely no pressure on us at all to sign up for anything. When an apartment came available, she showed it to us, and again left it in our hands to decide I hate sales pressure . We decided to take it.nWhen we moved my dad in, the room was very clean and ready to move in. Everyone was very welcoming and the staff very helpful.nMy dad really enjoys the meals, and he says all the residents are very friendly.nWe visited him today and he is amazed at how everybody there goes out of their way to make him feel at home, and are always willing to help.nRon Hartholt,
Update!! We moved Dad after 18 months. Everything that was promised was never delivered. 90 minutes of care per day, it never happened once. Filthy room, missed showers, dad was cleaning his own bathroom some days. Dad never had a choice for meals. I do not recommend moving your loved one here.nnI am not impressed with the 2nd floor. The staff that take care of my dad are wonderful but they are not treated well. This is a tough job and to be treated poorly by management as well as being under paid is terrible. We know the fees charged, there is more than enough money to increase their pay significantly. Then you won’t be short handed, I served dinner one night after Mary had a run in with staff and proper care can be given to the residents, it’s a win win!
We moved our 92-year old mother into Barrieview Memory Care floor earlier this year. Facility is beautiful if utilized for respite care or assisted living. The past two weeks were not good ones, as Mom fell and was sent twice to the hospital two weeks ago. Once on Wednesday, and then again on Saturday. Both times she fell my sister asked for details, and on both occasions no one could even tell her where she had fallen in her room. We assumed that when she was found, the facility would document all of the details.nAfter the second fall, when my sister visited with Mom, she was in bed as the staff indicated that she was too sore to get up. We were shocked they didn’t provide a small breakfast for her in bed. My sister managed to get her up on her own, dress her and brought her to the dining room for a light snack and tea which Mindy kindly provided. Things got worse, when another resident assaulted our mother the following Saturday. Police were called - awaiting response from facility on what steps are being taken to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.nFollowup - this past Sunday morning our Mom was admitted to RVH with a likely heart attack and a coma-like state. The hospital called my sister around 2 pm with the news that Mom would likely not be long for this world, and to head to the hospital ASAP. Many family members headed to the hospital, and while Mom did have a heart attack - she had also picked up covid at Barrieview which had an outbreak the prior week. No one from Barrieview even called my sister to apprise her that Mom was being hospitalized!
The staff are good but the care is questionable at best. We were told our parent would get 90 minutes of care per day and that never happens. 2 showers a week don’t always happen. Meals - second floor memory care has its own dining room. We were told we can order anything from downstairs if we want but that is not true. We’re told our parents can go to the main dining room when they want but if they do they have to sit in a room alone so what’s the point?nSafety is a huge concern. We found one resident on the floor in a pool of blood and had to get help. That one went to hospital and passed away. Another one fell and hit his head. God knows how long he laid there before someone found him. He went to hospital and never came back. We have had to get other residents help multiple times as staff cannot see to the ends of the hallways and are often hidden in the office area.nMemory care patients are to rely on pushing a button for help but do they remember? When our parent does push it no one comes for hours. They say there is lots to do there but we rarely see anyone out doing anything.nNot happy with this place and it is uber expensive.
We my husband and I moved in October 26 to a one-bedroom and den suite. Of course we had to downsize from our house, but all our most essential belongings fit nicely in the space. We find the very, very nice staff to be the most wonderful aspect of our time here. We're also impressed with the interesting food, the breadth of the amenities and activities, and the elegance of the decor. If one can no longer maintain a house, but can still mostly manage independently with the reassurance that help is at hand if needed, The Barryview is the place to be.
