Our stay was good! We really enjoyed the pool area! Our kids loved it! We looked forward to swimming at the beach on Madeline island but that day the water was ice cold so we rushed back to swim at the hotels pool. Best decision ever! Beds did feel a bit small but I didn’t mind it. Slept like a baby and probably because we had a lot to do during the daytime in Ashland. Only probably I had was the breakfast. Some of the hot food was still cold, pancake mix ran out fast, and the juice machine got really watered down. But it’s understandable when it gets busy! Another plus, was the amazing views. The lakefront and the sunset aft the lakefront! Def considering staying here again!
I feel like I should get half of my money back because that was the value of the room we got. The housekeeping wasn't great. My sheets had stains, the shower didn't drain, there was a random towel hanging in the bathroom that was obviously dirty from the last guests, and the bed was as hard as a rock. Cheap hotels use firm mattresses because they last longer and they're cheaper. But for the price we paid we expected nicer, softer mattresses. I just tossed and turned all night. The hot breakfast was good even though the guy at the front desk said it was going to be a grab-and-go because the kitchen was going to be closed but the kitchen was open and that was awesome and the lady who ran the kitchen was fantastic.but, anyway Management needs to pony up more money for nicer mattresses. We didn't use the pool, we really just wanted a place to lay our heads for the night while traveling. Paid extra for what I thought would be a more comfortable experience. The view of Lake Superior was nice, but aside from the view, I would have gotten the same experience at the super 8 down the street for 1/3 of the price. Tldr: bed bad, employees are trying their best, too expensive for what we got, view nice but not worth the $.
The staff was nice. The hotel is just very outdated, smelly and damp. The carpet in our room was damp and gross. You could smell the cigarette in the room. The whole lobby had a strong chlorine smell that made you think you walked into a aquatic center instead of a hotel. The breakfast was a huge disappointment, so much so that we went somewhere else to have breakfast the second morning. For the price we payed we were definitely looking for a better experience. This was subpar to any other mainstream hotel I have stayed at. The only two good thing about this hotel were the staff and the location.
Stopped here after bypassing Duluth hotels high prices and running out of options. Room was as expensive as Duluth. 230+! Room was small, kinda dirty, and cheaply furnished. Had walk in shower with broken shower chair. Had pool and arcade game room. No use for either. Breakfast room was well equipped but a long walk from the rooms. Tough for person on crutches. Desk staff were fine. Just way too pricey for the quality.
I will start with the good part of the hotel. We got the presidential suite, King bed, pull out couch, jacuzzi tub, fireplace, and the other standard amenities. The room was clean and not a single problem but desperately needs an update. The King bed was amazing, first bed I have stayed in at a hotel that did not wreck my back, but the pull out sofa was way past needing to be replaced. The floor space was great for my little ones, 1 1/2 & 3 yr old, plenty of space to play with toys and run around. Fireplace worked great and was nice since we stayed there in the middle of winter. Jacuzzi tub was good. Breakfast was good, no real complaints there, filled me up Now the bad side, the pool. We were there Saturday thru Monday, the watersides were only on from 4-9 pm Saturday. So Sunday kinda sucked with two little one that wanted the slides. There is a kiddie pool with a little slide that was on, so they got to use that at least. The hotub was OK, a little on the cooler side for my taste. Now speaking of cool, the main pool was EXTREMELY cold, I mean painfully cold, so that only left the pool at the bottom of the slides, which was barely warm enough to be useful, but was to shallow to really swim in, but it was all there was. The whole pool area needs to be repaired, there are water canons that do not work, buckets that fill automatically and dump on you'd not work work A hotel that was once a fun get away is now in need of a desperate update....
Stay was good overall. Good amenities in room and hotel. Staff however seemed to have better things to do than assist guests. Both at check in and check out, and when asking where the breakfast room was, staff seemed irritated to be pulled away from their desks. Only issue with the room was no way to turn lights on upon entering room. Had to fumble around for a switch when the one by the door did nothing.
Big pool was closed for entire time of visit supposedly for cleaning. Every interaction with the staff was proof none of them were happy to be there. Breakfast was another disappointment. Do yourself a favor, although there is no pool, try the Cobblestone Inn. The difference in price is minimal and the difference in hospitality, cleanliness and breakfast is enormous.
First off I really do like AmercInn as a chain. I know some are better kept than others, but for the price per night I was not impressed at all. Firstly, check in. While the gentleman who checked us in wasn't exactly unpleasant, he was definitely frazzled and complained of websites letting people book rooms that weren't available. Luckily the room I booked was. A "superior 2 queen lake view". Now mind you this was for a Thursday, not during applefest or anything crazy. We paid approx 190 for the night, so I expected, a nice view, clean and fairly well kept furnishings. What we got was technically lake view but was on the first floor so it was also grass, bugs, and dirt view. Also it was literally directly in from the door to the outside/vending and ice. Noise was a bit off putting, but I knew the hotel was full due to check in comments. At first glance the room seemed fine. But after a night trying to sleep in a bed with a definite groove in the center, plug ins so wobbled out the charger kept unplugging, and a bathroom that looked like a Petri dish of spores could be collected from it, I'm irritated. Then we went to breakfast. The room is all the way down by the conference area, small and had way too many people in way too little space. The breakfast fare was standard, but the sausage&eggs were Luke warm at best. There was only 1 waffle maker and 1 pancake maker. Also something to absorb sounds in that room would help as the voices were so loud I couldn't handle it in there. Basically for 80$ a night this would b the quality I expect, but not at this price point.
Pool area had areas that were shut down or not working properly. Issues with the doors needing to have key cards reset or new ones made, issues with charging on credit card inaccurate amounts. Second weekend in a row staying here and probably won't again unless something changes. What a shame, it used to be so nice here!Rooms: 3/5
