Alberta Aviation Museum

Story

The Alberta Aviation Museum is a museum in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is located on-site at the former Edmonton City Centre (Blatchford Field) Airport on the southwest corner of the field (11410 Kingsway Avenue). The museum operates daily except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.HistoryThe Alberta Aviation Museum hangar is the last remaining example of a 'double-double' Second World War British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) hangar. These hangars, built for the BCATP across Canada, were made of pre-cut wooden timbers of British Columbia fir. They could be built as single units, double units, and the 'double-double' which is four units.Built in 1940 after 3 double hangars for RCAF Station Edmonton, it was originally opened 5 October 1940 as No. 2 Air Observers School (AOS) under the command of Wop May. After the USA entered the Second World War the airport was used to service United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) aircraft heading to Alaska until the new USAAF base that was to become CFB Namao (now CFB Edmonton) opened outside of Edmonton and absorbed some of the traffic. Postwar the museum hangar was used by No. 418 (City of Edmonton) Reserve Squadron, Pacific Western Airlines and for Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) construction before becoming a car dealership in the late 1960s.

I had a wonderful experience at the museum. Rick was kind enough to show me around, gear the visit to my specific interests and even threw in some jokes for free! I only wish I had organized myself to have been able to stay for longer.nEveryone was friendly and knowledgeable. There is a bathroom on site. The gift shop has some cool things.nI highly recommend a visit for newbies in Edmonton!
Amazing aviation museum! The staff were incredibly friendly and very helpful throughout our visit. The place is well organized and easy to explore. We spent about an hour and a half walking around and there was so much to see — lots of unique airplanes, helicopter components, aviation history, and even simulators. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in aviation or looking for something different to do. Highly recommended!
Alberta Aviation Museum is an impressive and thoughtfully curated experience. The historical detail is rich and comprehensive, covering not only Canada’s aviation development during World War I and World War II, but also highlighting the many individuals who contributed — including the important roles women played in aviation history.nnThe museum does a great job presenting the personal stories and biographies of pilots and aviation pioneers, bringing history to life beyond just aircraft displays.nnThere is a wide variety of aircraft on display from different sectors, including military, training, law enforcement, and civil aviation. The exhibits also explore aircraft maintenance, pilot training, technological development, and the growth of aviation companies.nnFor families, there are interactive flight simulators and hands-on activities that allow children to experience aviation in a playful way. There’s even a creative corner where kids can color aviation-themed drawings with crayons — a thoughtful touch that keeps younger visitors engaged.nnOverall, the number of aircraft on display is impressive, and the museum conveys a powerful sense of Canada’s aviation heritage and innovation. It’s both educational and inspiring. Walking through the exhibits truly gives you a sense of how aviation shaped the country’s development and how technology once led to remarkable achievements.
The Aviation Museum is small but very charming. Despite its modest size, it features a surprising variety of aircraft - both military and civilian, historic and more modern. You’ll also find plenty of fascinating artifacts such as instruments, engines, and crew equipment, which really bring the history to life. One of the highlights is the flight simulator - it captivates both kids and adults, and it’s hard to resist “taking off” more than once. There’s also a cozy little gift shop where you can pick up a nice souvenir.nnIt’s truly good to see that a significant part of the collection is dedicated to women in aviation - service members, pilots and flight attendants.nnSince the museum is compact, you’ll need about 1.5-2 hours to see everything at a comfortable pace.nnBonus tip: if you’re a new permanent resident or Canadian citizen, you can get free admission through the Canoo app just make sure to activate your membership.
Clean, quaint, and happy teaching place for early aviation and Canadian aviation! The gift shop doesn't even break the bank! By far my favourite aircraft they had on display was the De Havilland Mosquito, always a gorgeous aircraft.
