We are a financial institution that serves those who live, work, or attend school in Multnomah County, Oregon. As we embrace the “small enough to know better” mantra, we work to guide each member on their individualized path to financial success.

Story

This is not the cookie-cutter, same-as-a-million-others place to bank.

Trailhead Federal Credit Union was founded in 1935 when eleven employees from Portland Gas and Coke decided to pool their money to form a financial cooperative. These founding members encouraged other gas company employees to deposit their money into the Credit Union so that their co-workers who needed to borrow, could do so at a reasonable rate. Unlike a bank, the profits of Trailhead are returned to our members in the form of better rates and lower fees.

We live in a city where individuals lead the way – where your financial goals are as unique and varied as the bicycles, beverages and social causes of our hometown, Portland OR.

That’s why we’re here. We are a cooperative of the eclectic. We’re proudly different – ever adapting to the changing needs of our community and your financial goals. This is banking for you.

Additionally, we have two amazing branch locations. Our newest gem, is nestled in the distinctive, urban neighborhood of Portland’s North Mississippi Avenue, and is the first and only financial institution in this vibrant and eclectic area.

Friendly service, great rates, prompt service, very knowledgeable employees. The services offered are good as well. Multiple locations makes it more convenient as well.

I actually am shopping for a Credit Union to become a member of. This is the first time that posted reviews will influence my decision. I am not going to join this credit union. I was recommended, by a close friend who is a member, that I should become a member of this Credit Union. Wish me luck! Regardless to the type of financial institution, customer service should be held to the highest standard. Step up your game Trailhead, thats to many bad reviews for all of them to be without merit.

I have had both five star and zero star service. The online app is excellent, the ease of virtual interaction and low or no fees great. But when it's bad, it's a heartache. It's when you are stuck knee-deep in a loan or a surprise piece of red tape where you need personalized help that things go awry. Flexibility, speed and customer service, in my experience, is not a priority at the downtown branch. I've even been slapped down for expressing my concerns.

Pros: Easy auto finance and refinances convenient locations downtown PDX Partner banks with other local credit unions Neat features on checking and savings account Refunds ATM fees (when applicable) Tom (or Tim) solid guy go to him when you need help for DT branch help Cons: Questionable ethics in overdraft fees: I used to use their bill pay and would have bills come out on my direct deposit paydays, doing some research i've found they habitually would remove money from my account PRIOR to making deposits thus my account would suffer "Courtesy fees" depending on how many bills I would have 2 or more i've seen up to 5 in one day. When i call to question these they say "oh it's policy to pay 'bill pays' THEN add income" and fees would get reversed. I suggest everyone check their accounts... I have also seen where my ledger maintained a positive balance YET somewhere along the in and out of funds from my account a "hold" was placed on my fund where I would incur more "courtesy fees" which would cascade out of control in one instance totally 300 in more "courtesy fees" when my account shows a positive balance with enough to cover all of my expenses. Again call and complain they will be reversed. No telephone notifications of insurance added to loan, I was in a motorcycle accident and was hospitalized for some time along with my bike being immobile, my MC payment had a third of total payment added on top without notification to me other than a single sheet of paper where I had to sift through their mailings to find. Again READ everything they send. Customer service is sporadic I have been harassed by some and helped by others. At one point had a rep scream over me while i was trying to talk to her about why i was getting so many courtesy fees. Or receiving email after email of my to do something at their convenience rather than what worked with my schedule. My work cuts a paper check and the amount is rather high, i called and got pre-authorization for them to release the funds in establishing this procedure. Every pay period they do not release fund, and i have to call in, at which point I am told through their kindness they will release the funds "this time" even though it's been documented and established from my employer to their system. But I'm made to feel like this is a favor every time. Again i've seen more fees upwards of 400 in one day because they didn't release my paycheck per our agreement and charged fees per account deduction. Be an aware customer, they do not have your interests in mind and will destroy your budget with their "courtesy fees" but will reverse them if you find them. Watch your money they have a clever system setup...
