The desserts are incredible — honestly some of the best I’ve ever tried. You can really tell a lot of care goes into them. The coffee is decent and pairs nicely with the sweets. The location is great and the atmosphere is very friendly and cozy, making it a perfect place to relax, meet friends, or enjoy a quiet coffee break. Definitely a lovely little spot to visit.
I visited this place while visiting Vancouver. After reading online much about their chocolate marquise cake, paid a visit to them.nnI ordered few items including chocolate marquise cake slice, handful of truffles, almond croissant and a cappuccino.nnLet's start with chocolate marquise cake slice. It has around 5 layers to it. The top chocolate slate like layer is good, it's not very thick or dense and does not stick in the mouth. The chocolate mouse at the second layer is very heavy, dense and way over sweet. The mouse should be very light, soft but not in this case, and leaves after taste for sometime which I did not enjoy. The next two layers were way too thick, sticky, dense and quite hard to even cut it with knife to some extent. I think it's the thick caramel layer which just did not work very well with this cake. It took me a while to get rid of its taste in my mouth, had to drink lots of water to flush it out. The hazelnut wafer like layer at the bottom is also not very appetizing, at least for me. I think it's because of the previous two sticky and dense layers that threw my tastebud for the bottom layer. Overall, it's a failed cake slice.nnThe truffles were decent, some were very light and smooth while the others also were little dense.nnAlmond croissant had some funky smell to its filling, did not enjoy that at all.nnCappuccino was not over sweet, it's a big cup to juggle up for sure.nnService is good and quick. You're greeted right after entering into the store. It's located in the busy area of downtown surrounded by designer stores and lots of restaurants and corporate area, which keeps it running. Has small indoor seating area and handful outside the store.nnOverall, it's a decent place to visit based on the hype it gets but nothing stands out about their pastries.
Thierry Alberni has earned its reputation, and one bite in, it’s clear why. The pastries here sit in that rarefied tier where restraint becomes a flex. The classic plain croissant is a quiet knockout, shatteringly crisp on the outside, buttery and feather-layered within, absolutely nailing what a croissant should be. The French macarons follow suit: precise, balanced, and dialed in without being flashy. There is plenty of other products available but these were the highlights of our visit.nnThe coffee also holds its own, making this a proper one-stop start to the day rather than just a pastry detour.nnService here is true quick-counter café style with undeniable elevation with small service touchpoints like wooden service trays, proper café cups and thoughtful self-busing area. Seating is limited to the point of being almost symbolic, and the interior layout feels more transactional than intimate. A large product display table dominates the center of the floor, and when the café is busy, the tight lineup area can feel awkward and compressed. The space reflects success more than soul, function over charm.nnStill, those quirks fade quickly once the pastry is in hand. Thierry isn’t the place to linger, write, or settle in too long. It’s the place to enjoy something exceptional and step back onto the street and let your day start on a very high note.
The sweet spot for a date or meet with friends - the cafe has tables and chairs indoors and a covered outdoors, first come first serve. They serve specially crafted coffee, wine, and spirits along with their elevated desserts.nnOur favorite has been their classic, Chocolate Marquise - the thick layer of caramel and crunchy praline base provide an excellent textural contrast to the smooth mousse. I tried my new favorite today however, the caramel tonka coffee tart flavors sing. I could see some wanting more texture from the graham but I love the pairing of the coffee, vanilla and caramel.
I know sweet is a sin.nIf I must sin, let it be dark, layers of dark chocolate, cookies, even a drinkable darkness, right here.nnA short hop to Vancouver.nA birthday song for a friend back home.nKeeping company with these little dark indulgences, guilt-free.nnA must-stop place, alone or with company.nOnly cute little dark sins here.
