"Inspired by the traditions of Wisconsin taverns and supper clubs, The Old Fashioned exists to pay tribute to the foods and spirits that make our state famous. Here, that means so much more than beers, brats, and cheese. Don't worry, we take all those things very seriously, but we're equally committed to preserving the unique heritage that defines our way of life. When you walk through our doors, you'll not only experience what Wisconsin was, you’ll taste what it always will be."

Very good! Slightly humid in the restaurant..but the food was delicious! I got the cherry salad which I normally don't buy salad but it was amazing! The chicken for an up charge of $3 was worth it, to add on! The cheese curds were really good! Just the cheese shot out of some of them! Very cool place to visit! Check this local favorite out!
Came in for lunch, which meant you order at the bar, pay and they bring your food out to the table. The waitress did touch the table a few times to make sure we were satisfied. Food was great. Cheese curds voted best for good reason. Burger, BLT, kids mac n cheese and drinks we're all very delicious. Would return. Kid-friendliness: Several items available on the kids menu. Parking: Street or nearby ramp.
It was…mostly tasty. The cheese curds were to die for, of course. For dinner I got the fried chicken and I felt it could’ve been more flavorful. Didn’t care for the baked beans at all. If I came back I would order something else. Be prepared to park on the street. Good vibes tho and my old fashion was amazing.
If you don't live in Wisconsin or even if you do and want to taste Wisconsin this is your spot. The Old Fashioned is located in scenic downtown Madison by the capital. The decor inside matches the awesomeness of the selections on the menu. I ordered the fish combo perch, cod and walleye because I absolutely love walleye but had never tried perch again, I don't live in the northwoods region. I was glad I did because all of the fish and my sides coleslaw, fries and bread were delicious! Oh, the cheese curds are a scene stealer! They were even voted the best in Wisconsin by USA Today. The staff, was definitely friendly as we arrived 20 min before closing. Do yourself a favor and try The Old Fashioned. I mean they even have a picture of Paul Bunyan on the wall, so you know its good.
WORST birthday dinner EVER! First, the food was bad. My “Wisconsin” hot dog was so bland, and the fries that came with it were bland too. The fondue we ordered was bland and chalky; the chain, The Melting Pot, has way better fondue. Second, our waitress, Joana, was awful. She took SO long to take our order and we barely saw her at all throughout the whole meal, so we couldn’t flag her down when we needed her. My husband’s coke glass was empty for the majority of the meal due to her absence and, when he reminded her for at least the 2nd time to refill it after we had finished dessert and asked for it in a to-go cup, she gave him DIET coke... As for the icing on the cake of our whole awful experience, it’s pretty much common courtesy for restaurants to give free dessert for birthdays, but apparently Joana is totally clueless about this. We asked if they did anything for birthdays because it’s my birthday today and she said they don’t have cake, but could bring out a “crisp.” We said okay because I at least wanted SOMETHING to feel celebratory and she brought a dish out. It tasted like apple oatmeal with ice cream or something like that, so I ate a few bites and called it a day. Then, she has the audacity to charge us $7 for the dessert! I do not understand why this restaurant has been highly acclaimed by Food Network. I watch that channel all the time and the dishes they put out do not compare to what my husband and I ate tonight. I came with high expectations, and they weren’t even remotely met. Awful, slow, unkind, and inattentive waitress. Bland food. No cake or celebration. Disappointing ending to our trip to Wisconsin, and worst birthday dinner ever. $50 for an awful night. Would love to be reached out to about this.
Holy mackerel — we were traveling from out of town and were told we needed to try this place and yeah, we definitely did. We came in for brunch and the service was stellar and the food was even better. Everything was delicious — cocktails, coffee, appetizers and brunch fair clearly used fresh and local ingredients. I think we’ll be back anytime we’re in Madison. What a gem!
Early friday evening seated before it got crowed. Took a bit to order drinks but never know now if staffing issues. Wanted light meal so split spicy hamburger. Was very good and was nice they gave us two plates with generous sides. Ordered famous cheese curds. On the greasy side. Had warm chips that could have been seasoned. Still had nice time.
Great food! Top rated by the Food Network and known for their fried cheese curds, voted #1 in all of Wisconsin! We went on a weekday afternoon and only had a short wait to get in. We've also ordered to go and had a good experience with that too. Recommend adding some extra time for this stop if you're going to be in downtown Madison. Dietary restrictions: They had gluten free buns and were able to easily accomodate that allergy.
Everything was so good. Try the cheese curds. I know every restaurant in Wisconsin has them, but these are the best. And try the old fashioned. The restaurant is literally named for them, and they did NOT disappoint. I got the chicken fried steak I put the gravy on the side, but it normally comes on top, and loved it. I'd love to come back!
First impression was not at all positive. The server took a long time to come to the table. So a host actually took our drinks order when he realized that the server hadn't been to our table. Finally when the server came to our table she didn't apologize nor did she introduced herself. Cocktails were good. Food wasnt too impressive at all. The fondue was extremely bland in flavors. Don't think we will visit this establishment again. Overall experience was less than average.
