I went for a private event . This would be an interesting place to rent for work party work event. There was wine service allowed and a possibility to bring food to share . The museum had a temporary LGBTQ and sailing exhibition. Many boats models, knots anchors. Small but nice museum.
The absolute worst way to spend $21.00. It would have been more entertaining flushing my money down the toilet than visiting this museum. It consists of 2 small rooms, smaller than my bedroom. Very over-priced, left a lot to be desired. Needs improvement. After 5 minutes you have seen all there is to see. Don't waste your money.
We had such fun at the Sea Glass Jewelry class! Naomi was a wonderful, patient and enthusiastic teacher. Bonus was that a visit to the museum was included in the modest fee!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Kinda sad really. There's a room, maybe 150 sq ft with some models of ships really nice models, very detailed some 4' long . Maybe 10 or 12 ships. There's another room with some examples of knots sailers use. There's a box with 1 side gravel and 1 side sand and some miniature examples of various types of anchors you can put in the gravel / sand and see how they grab the bottom. That's about it. $10.00 admission, we looked around and read the little info cards on the model ships and were out in about 20 minutes. I was totally underwhelmed and disappointed. You'd think we could do better.
As the other reviews have said... Very small. If the fee was maybe cheaper, it would be ok and maybe attract more customers. Only went in for the Saturday themed playgroup which was good... If I paid just for the museum, it's not ok..Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I am not really a big boat enthusiast but decided to check it out when they had an open house on Victoria day long weekend. I was pleasantly surprised to see a fabulous art show at the back of the museum see attached pics so it was well worth the visit for me. It is very small but it would take quite awhile to read and listen to everything they had on display there.
You only need 15 minutes to look over the two rooms: one with steamship models, the other with knots. I KNOW Victoria has more maritime history than that!Visited onWeekday
I really wanted to ask for my money back. It was incredibly expensive for what amounted to a one room display with a few model ships. Unlike other museums that have been temporarily displaced from their original homes this one has not reduced its rates to correspond with a reduced display. I cannot in good conscience recommend this museum.
A shadow of its old self at the Douglas location. There are two small rooms with displays. The main room is mostly a dozen or so models of ships and a few small artifacts, and a little over half of the space is currently the "Queer at Sea" exhibit with sometimes-graphic testimonies and stories from LGBT people on placards above seemingly unrelated artifacts. Most artifacts had no explanation provided so we didn't know what they were beyond a small caption. This room was also unbearably hot and stuffy. The second room seemed to host a few interactive displays on tablets as well as a thing on knots and anchors, but the space was filled with a group doing a sea glass wrapping class so we weren't able to access any of those displays as it seemed to be a closed event- we were not invited to join, lights were dimmed for a projector with instructions, and displays were pushed against walls etc. This was particularly frustrating for my youngest as they offer a scavenger hunt worksheet for little kids but she wasn't able to look at many of the exhibits in the booklet. I understand they're in the process of finding a permanent home but this was a really disappointing experience. I'll be happy to return when you can see more of the collection and more on nautical history, not just a few models and a special interest display.
Nice place to visit. They used to be much larger but since they moved to a smaller building the exhibit area became a lot smaller. Still a good stop while in Victoria.
