The Homestead - America's Freshwater Resort surrounded by Sleeping Bear Dunes

Story

Northern Michigan’s largest waterfront resort community, located in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, a unit of the National Park Service. Stayed at the Stony Brook Lodge. Paid for a water view, and while we can technically see the water, the view is largely obscured by trees. The private pool at SBL is nice and clean, and the warmest of the three pools we have tried. The Beach Club is OK, but the pool is very cold. The well maintained portion of the beach was relatively small. The transportation appears spotty at best, and it seems easier to get around on our own, especially with young children. The one bedroom suite is spacious enough for our group, but the toilet runs. The patio door is a challenge to lock.

My first visit to Michigan, and one of the best vacations ever. Very nice place to spend a full week. The area is beyond what I expected and the resort is well groomed. I will get back this year for sure.

**I'm going to add an edit to my review and remove a star. Came up again this weekend for the third time. This time my experience was met with disappointment. Word has it the snow making equipment at the Homestead is on the fritz. Drove 4 hours to find really poor ski conditions. Yes, the weather wasn't cooperative but a base would have made it better. There was a lot of green growing on the hill. When I called ahead and asked about conditions no one mentioned the lack of man made snow. Check in was friendly and easy. Directions to our condo also easy. Our condo was clean and nice. We selected a ski out condo on the hill. I recommend this for skiers. Such an easy in and out. Hills were groomed nicely even though the weather created issues. Employees of the lodge ski the hills and offer advice to not so experienced skiers. The view of Lake Michigan is spectacular. Great photo opportunities. Lift operators were friendly and safe. Night life was not too exciting. Only 2 restaurants to choose from. A pizza place with really only pizza on the menu. The other is more upscale. Our dinner was $100+ for two. Meals were good though. Wait staff was friendly. But, maybe not so experienced. Yes. I would recommend. Family friendly.

Everyone we talked to was so incredibly nice! My only complaint is that we went during the off season so not much was open or available, that's not their fault though. The views are just amazing on the resort. Everything seems so homey and connected!

Fun, family oriented ski resort. Great views without the crowds of the bigger resorts. Terrain is limited but well cared for by the staff. Good for smaller children and young families. Older children will get bored after a single day.
