The owners seem to know their inventory pretty well, which is good because the organization of their wares is somewhat haphazard. Prices are average to high. Pretty much every square inch is devoted to books, so if you're patient you can probably find something.
First and foremost you should know this place is cash only. It always has been, and always will be. This place has the largest collection of used books in Guelph! It is absolutely incredible what you can find here! Everything from first editions to pulpy romance novels complete with Fabio lookalikes on the cover! First edition of The Rat by Günter Grass Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series 19th Century Bulgarian History Credit Cards or Debit
The staff was quite rude to both my daughter and myself, pity because we were both laden with Christmas money and seen many books we were ready to buy. It was almost like they did not want to part with any of their stock. The one lady asked me what I wanted then once I found the book took it from me and placed it back on the shelf. I will not be returning!
Sunrise, and Robert, are great... more than 5 star - a full selection of all the regular books and series, and a wealth of off-beat titles, backed up by superior literary and trade knowledge. Most highly recommended!
Amazing book store super cozy a lot of books.super cute
Honestly this place is amazing! I'm a book lover and this place caught my eye on the way to school one day, finally got to go in yesterday and I'm blown away! The gentleman that was running the desk was very kind and helpful! You could spend a while day in this place and still never see everything he has to offer. I found both new and old books side by side, got an amazing set of graphic novels while there for next to nothing compared to places like indigo! Super happy with my first visit and looking forward to visiting again! P.s. cash only!
Could spend hours there. It's pretty well organized considering how many books are in there. Just remember to bring cash as they don't take cards. However they held my box of books while a went to the bank machine. Super friendly and helpful, but at the same time not at all pestering so you can browse peacefully.
Wonderful small bookstore that's perfect to spend time diving through with a huge selection. Be aware they are cash only though
I love this book store. It's like an explosion of books. Books rise up to the ceiling and cover every surface. The owner can seem a little grumpy or unfriendly at first... but he is the ultimate reader. He knows his stock and his customers but more importantly he knows and loves books. He has created a haven for book lovers. Keep in mind though - it's cash only. So come prepared.
I'm super torn about this place. On one hand, I love it. I've gone many times over the last 6-7 years of living a couple blocks away. I love the feeling of walking through the aisles and stumbling across new books. But I have some issues with this place: 1 The selection is extremely vast.... but a lot of it is extremely outdated and looks like it's sat on the shelves for 10+ years and will probably stay on those shelves until the end of time. Granted, I have always found the areas that I enjoy to be pleasantly stocked, so this is one of my smaller complaints. It just depends on what you are looking for, I suppose. 2 The piles of books laying on the floor and the tightly packed shelves reaching to the skies... er, ceilings... are charming and have this feeling of magic that you see in bookstores in tv shows and movies. I feel as if I could stumble across some crazy old book and get sucked into The Neverending Story or Inkheart... However, I also feel like I could have a couple hundred pounds of paperbacks and wood crash down on me and crush my skull. Does this place get inspected on a regular basis? Because I couldn't see any documentation on the walls about whether it's up to code. 3 The customer service is very... lacking. The gentleman that works there seems to only be willing to talk if you're at least 40+ years old. I have tried a couple times to engage with him and he just shrugs me off. But I've waited to be rung through for a solid 20 minutes while he had a fantastic conversation with other patrons that just found his store. I understand that maybe the store is more of a passion than a career, and I highly admire that. But for the life of me I cannot connect with any of these reviews that say "great service". And often when I ask whether they have something, I just get pointed down an aisle. And if I still cannot find it, I get a sigh and a slow walk of shame to the location, often to be told "it should be somewhere in this area" and then I'm left to figure it out on my lonesome. 3.5 My real complaint of customer service is the lady that works there this is actually my first time ever seeing her. This is a new complaint, and the reason I am writing this. I called earlier today asking if they were taking books, if it was purely donation or if they bought them and what their rules on books were. I was told they do exchange only and the only stipulation was that they were only taking paperbacks.... that's all they said. So I loaded up a bunch of books I wanted to get rid of 30-40 books and left on my merry adventure, excited. Now granted, some of the books were quite old and beaten up. And I had a feeling that a good portion of them would be turned away. I even said when I got there that I was planning to donate all of these anyway most were given to me when my mom downsized and I no longer wanted them and even if they weren't worth trading for, I would be willing to just give them away. The lady there took about 6 books out of my bag and said "we won't take any of these, they're not in good condition." That's fine and all. But most of them had about the same condition as some of the romance novels behind me that had very clearly helped someone get through their divorce. No one had said anything about condition over the phone, and I've been in many times before and seen books in far worse condition than some of these. But I tried to say that there were definitely some further down that were in much better condition and much newer. She just said no and said it would be best if I just go donate them elsewhere. Now, none of this was said in a sassy retort or with any sign of malice. But rather with a monotonous, dismissing drone that suggested that I had just waisted precious seconds of her life even suggesting that she even consider what I had brought in. 4 Please, for the love of some fictional god... get a debit machine. Covid aside, cash only in 2020... really? I never know how much I might spend while in a bookstore!
