A very interesting and informative museum right on a Lock in the canal! Lots of information about the local area and the history of the canals. We even got to see a small boat move through the canal system. The Ontario lacrosse hall of fame was really fun too.
The St Catharines museum has a great collection of artifacts and an excellent 20 min plus video of the history of the first three canals and the final fourth version you can see today with a total of 8 locks along the Welland Canal. The real treat is watching these huge ships some up to 225 meters/740 + feet lifted up or down almost 14 meters in less than 15 minutes.nnFrom the viewing platform you can watch these monster ships while less than 10 meters away! Fabulous experience and education. I visited the Sauté St Marie locks several times but the viewing platform and museum makes St Catherine’s my new favorite.nnTIP. Check the ship schedule on line before you visit and time your arrival to make sure you are there when a ship or two arrives to pass through Lock #3.
The museum has so much from our past. This is a great place to take your family or your grandchildren. The observation deck outside has a great view of the boats coming through the lock. Even if you just choose to grab yourself a coffee and a snack there is various areas outside on the lower and upper decks with a great view to enjoy some downtime.
I've lived in St. Catharines on and off over the past years and as it was my first time at the museum; it helped me feel a lot more connected with the city and the region. I really enjoyed the exhibits focussing on the history of the canal, women & black history St. Catharines'. I can't forget the Lacrosse Museum as well! Was really interesting to see objects and history of the sport on display. Everything is by donation : Would highly recommend to locals and visitors to the city/region alike. I spent about an hour here and was happy!
Amazing place and surprisingly lots of information for Donation of $5. The most well-liked location to observe ships navigating the Welland Canal, one of the world's engineering wonders, is the Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre. See these enormous creatures from the observation deck or the Lock View Lounge on the second floor.
