During the War of 1812, Fort George served as the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army. Fort George was a principal fortification on the Niagara Peninsula during the War of 1812 and played a key role in the defence of Upper Canada. On May 25, 1813, Fort George was destroyed by American artillery, which, contributed to an American victory in the Battle of Fort George and a subsequent seven-month occupation by American forces.

It’s a great way to spend my Saturday with my aunts. We attended the flag ceremony, saw the soldiers march and watched their demonstrations. Walked along the grounds and visited the different places inside the site. Definitely a good time to know the History of the war in 1912.
We went on Canada Day, so admission and parking were free, and there was a lot going on. We went in the morning, so the grounds also were not too busy. We enjoyed musket demonstrations, a talk about the War of 1812, exploring the buildings on property, and so much more. There were many people available to answer questions, and the grounds were very well maintained. Our kids, ages 5 & 9 enjoyed it as much a we did.
A super set of reenactors exists here! From the docent at the entry gate, to the workers inside the gift shop/library/visitors center, to the squad of wool uniform civilians reenacting drill and ceremony movements and brown bess black powder low yield charge long rifle weapons drills and blank cartridge firing. More period unit crests and fort recognition items should be added to the main gate and the period blockhouses to give the visitor a more authentic historical perspective. Summer sun is warm/hot here in july... not many shade trees or overhangs. Mortars and period cannons need refurbished and polished, and the cannon crest markings need painted authentically.
We happen to hit a day where there was a lot going on at Fort George. I would highly recommend that you check their agenda to see if you're going on a day where they're doing things. We were fortunate enough to be there when they were doing a musket and rifle live firing, and artillery firing, and a Fife and Drum demonstration. The characters all dress in period clothingand are quite knowledgeable of the details of the time.
This place is so rich in history.nIt is very well maintained and tells its tale about the importance of niagara region for this country.nMoving around reflects the hardships, sacrifice and honor of brave men of this country. We went there on Canada day and it was open for all tourists. The parade was professional and everything was super nice that day.nThe rooms were full of historical things that one could think of.nWill visit again for sure.
