Great place if you are a triathlete looking to round out your gear. Or looking for quality road bikes, keep in mind this is a specialty bike store with two specific focuses. Don't expect to find your starter mountain bike here. That said I am a highly competitive triathlete who was looking to improve my gear for the cycling portion of triathlon I already run a 31:59 10km no problem and his place did the task for me. Recommend going here if you are a triathlete looking for a triathlon focus on cycling.
My first review was a 5 out of 5. Friendly staff with great advice. I got the perfect road bike for me and they beat the prices of everyone else by a mile. They had the bike ready in no time and even added cleats to my shoes and so was on the road in no time. What could go wrong? My new and wonderful bike started to make a terrible sound after ten rides. I brought it in as the mechanic took off the cranks and tried what he could to find the problem. I left the bike with them and was told it looked like a bottom bracket problem. This is where the issues arose: they were no longer a Cervelo dealer. So they did not have the tools to fix the bike. A shop a block away, the Bike Shop was a new dealer so they had to order a special tool and I would be called by Speed Theory when it came in. I was left in the dark and not provided any updates after a week went by without a word. I then went to Cervelo who told me as Speed Theory were not an authorized dealer, I was on my own. Speed Theory's response to this was I got a good deal as it was priced to sell so they also essentially left me on my own. I did take the bike to the Bike Shop. When the head mechanic test rode it, he had two others check and confirm it was not a bottom bracket but as it turns out the wheel. The Bike Shop spent over two hours attempting fixes and did not charge me a cent. They made the bike rideable and they have submitted the warranty claim to the tire manufacturer on my behalf. So my warning is when a deal is too good to be true, it probably is and you get what you pay for. Had Speed Theory told me they were not a authorized dealer of Cervelo and thus the bike would not be covered under warranty, at least I had been warned. And again, my impression was I got such a great deal, what did I expect from Speed Theory. Whereas the guys at the Bike Shop Central went over and above. I did not even buy the bike from them and yet they were contacting Cervelo, spent hours trying to find a fix and seemed to be genuinely empathetic to my situation.
I tend to build my own bikes - and yes, from time to time, things don't always go as planned. I decided to drop into SpeedTheory for help, and they were absolutely fantastic. Jimmy, and Andrew, helped me in a very timely manner - and took care of my "dream build". They also helped with a warranty issue for a part that I bought online. Thanks again for that. This was my first visit, but certainly not my last. They've earned my business and will be my go-to shop for high end road bike support.
As far as knowledge with bikes and gear, Speed Theory is a great place to go for advice. However, I would not advise purchasing anything from them as Speed Theory's return policy is not on par with their knowledge base. I purchased a trainer and carry case from them and the trainer broke the first time I used it. Not Speed Theory's fault in any way. Luckily the good folks at the place I currently bike at were able to provide me a trainer in the middle of our brick so I could finish the workout and told me to just use that for future workouts. When I went to return the trainer with receipt in hand one week later I was told they would send it off for warranty replacement. I said they are within their rights to claim warranty on the trainer but I in no way wanted another one. I'm easily turned off by a product that will break on the first go when all instructions are followed, as I suspect many people of this world would be. I asked for a refund and Speed Theory refused to give a refund in the way of giving my money back, but were more than happy to offer store credit for the trainer. After discussion I reluctantly agreed to the return. 5 months later I received a phone call saying that I still have a trainer carry case that I had left with them. I recall asking them to return that and they said store credit for it as well. After 5 months they are calling me saying they can't give me store credit on the bag since it had been used again, used once with the trainer that broke. I'll happily use my store credit up on nutrition, tubes, tires, part, etc. After that I will not be heading back there and would not recommend Speed Theory to anyone in the Calgary area. Again, great folks. Everyone was pleasant to deal with. I've heard great things about their knowledge base and advice but after my experience I would be careful when purchasing items from Speed Theory.
Really friendly and helpful staff. Some of them have raced or do race now so its great to get advice or even to stop by and chat about bikes. Really great recommendations too since everyone I talked to there knows the difference between shiny upgrades and upgrades that help you perform. What do you mean saving 30 grams doesn't make me a better cyclist? I recently purchased a 2015 bike from them and ifwhen I buy another bike they'll be top on the list.
Had a service to change handlebars/aerobars. Initially mechanic gave me a quote for one price that was significantly different from what I have ended up paying w/o providing any prior notification of overheads. Furthermore, after the whole work was done, I noted that they put additional parts, such as brake levers as my current were too small, w/o even try to call me asking whether I want them to be changed for an additional price. However, the biggest disappointment was when a mechanic indicated that I had a crack in my frame and it was unsafe to ride the bike. Why would you finish the work and then tell that there is a crack? Moreover, in some cases, it may be cheaper to buy a new frame… Additionally, my old handlebars were discarded as they would be considered unsafe, and they were not able to recover/return it. Whereas, I could have fixed them. Then, while I was going on my way home, I noticed that the cabling was incorrectly done and had to return to the shop and instead of fixing it within the same day or next day, I had to wait for an additional couple of business days.
Had put off a professional bicycle fit, having adjusted everything myself and had things setup in the ball park as it were and was fairly comfortable with the bike using normal shoes. Decided to get cycling shoes in order to get a consistent seat to pedal height adjustment instead of constantly readjusting seat height for different shoe sole thicknesses. That's when I decided to get cycling shoes and get everything fitted at once. Got the cleats adjusted and the fitting done, noticing a 5 kph improvement in speed on the trainer during the session at the same effort after some adjustments. I was reaching slightly for the handlebars, which I never noticed before and it only took a slight adjustment to make that more comfortable. Everything was dialed in and the result was my knees stopped feeling like they were being jerked at the bottom of each pedal stroke. The pedaling became smoother and felt like my legs were actually pedaling through a larger rotation of the cranks. Hit over 150 rpm for the first time on a trainer so obviously there were some dramatic improvements. Was very impressed with how easily the changes were made and how effective they were. The real test is getting out for a long ride when the weather improves and rechecking my maximum speed on a 2000 watt resistance trainer in the next few days.
After having my bike which I purchased at another bike shop in and out of their shop with little or no improvement in shifting I decided to give Speed Theory a try. After having discovered the frame was bent and ordering a rear derailleur that worked better for the bike. My bike has never shifted so well. Very please with the mechanics and the service provided
I've only been to this place twice but they've messed it up both times. The first time was for a bike tune-up. I had to schedule weeks in advance which, in fairness, isn't that uncommon at a Calgary bike shop in the summer months. They left the bike in the highest gear which, if I hadn't noticed, I would have got on my bike, clipped in, and promptly fallen off. I asked them to fix the cadence sensor magnet on my crank I didn't have any zipties at home and they were maintaining the bike anyway and they somehow managed to install the sensor backwards so the magnet fell out !!!. The second time was to get some screws for my cleats. I even brought my shoes in, but I didn't know the length of screw. They sold me screws that were waaaay too long. The staff might be friendly, but it doesn't seem like they know what they're doing entirely.
Best shop in Calgary for triathletes. Staff are knowledgeable and can help out with all triathlon related questions. They stock a good selection of high end bikes and gear. Maintenance service is top notch.
