The GLC’s primary goal is to build a stronger community while promoting healthy and active lifestyles and environmentally sound means of transportation. It offers a safe, supportive and inclusive place where community members can interact, help out, and learn from each other. Aside from the benefits of encouraging self-sufficiency, resiliency, and empowerment, environmental benefits include reducing carbon emissions through reduced traffic congestion as well as individual production in addition to recycling bicycles and parts otherwise destined for the waste stream.

The GLC is building towards a vibrant and diverse community in which alternative transport is accessible and individuals have the tools to connect with the local environment as well as develop understanding and environmental stewardship while cultivating the skills to safeguard and affect the natural world wisely. GLC creates positive social ties and expands individual’s networks of contacts by bringing together individuals of all backgrounds. The GLC is built on the model of Universal Design, and the space is organized to include people facing many different barriers.

Last time I was here I was at the shop first thing in the morning. Another person came into the shop 20 mins after and started debating which one of the pair was actually suppose to be opening the location. Turns out it was the person that showed up late, awesome if it wasn't for the incorrect person being there I would have waited outside. I asked for a hand and staff here could have cared less they would point at something and left me figure out the rest. I seen women come in multiple occasions and they bend over backwards for them. I will give this place another try but if nothing changes the review sticks.
I won't ever step foot into this place again! Me and a friend came down to look at some bikes and was told that the day was special for gender empowerment which we think is awesome but at the same time told we had to leave because we weren't female or transgender. This was the first time I've ever experienced discrimination and its really sad because the very thing they are supposedly "fighting against" they are doing us . We've already told friends and family to never come here and we've reported them to the News paper for discrimination. My goal is to now make it aware to many people as possible to never shop there. If the roles were reversed and I owned a business and held a day to prevent people of LGBT from coming in then all Hell would break loose. This is hypocritical and doesn't help your cause at all.
Generally this bike shop is a very interesting place to visit. You never know what you may find or experience while you visit. Good and bad. The Wednesday GEM closed session is an awesome concept. Love the idea, but frankly it is scheduled at a terrible time. This type of program should be conducted outside of regular business hours. Wednesday starting at 5pm would be my recommendation. Discrimination is not acceptable and refusing service to males on Wednesday is contradictory to the concept of the store. The staff are truly a hit and miss group. Some are quite helpful and others are borderline abrasive and not interested in helping at all. Generally, I find the bicycles are overpriced, considering that the lionshare of the bikes are donated for free. This is especially the case when most customers are financially strained and looking for a reliable bike at a reasonable price. If you go to this store, bear in mind that you will have to fend for yourself, but the parts are reasonably priced if you bike requires some maintenance. I usually watch YouTube videos and just go buy the parts and repair my bikes at home.
shop employee and customer in a 30 minute screaming match while I was there. the other workers hid in the back, so I walked around for 30 minutes, waiting. also was told to leave on a Wednesday when I came in the second time, because I am straight. yikes. surprised they're still around to be honest. Edit: after having the bike shop address the controversy they created in a positive way, my review still stands. Even if I completely ignore the fact that I was turned away for being visibly straight nobody asked, just told me to leave like it's the 1930s and I'm a visible minority, I still cannot give this place a review better than 1 star due to the extreme unpleasantness I encountered the first time I went in. It seems nobody truly wants to be there and assist customers. I also found the prices to be pretty unreasonable; yeah, I don't really feel like paying $200 for a 1970s road bike that will take 12 hours of work to make rideable. Thanks, I'll use Kijiji/Value Village for that.
Wonderful place with wonderful staff. Note that most of the 1-star reviews are from people who feel personally attacked by the four hours on Wednesdays that they run their awesome GEM program in which the shop is reserved for women, trans, and non-binary people who may feel less comfortable in a male-dominated atmosphere.
As a woman, I feel uncomfortable going to a bike shop that discriminates based on declared gender. This is completely backwards to everything legitimate feminists have been fighting for. I do not need a safe space as a woman and the suggestion that this is progressive is abhorrent. Yes a private business has the right to turn away customers for whatever reason they like, but potential customers should be aware of the discrimination. I will take my business elsewhere and vocally suggest others do the same.
The one star reviews are from men who are upset that there are FOUR HOURS on ONE DAY a week that the shop is only open to women, femme-identified and non-binary people. Literally open to anyone every other business day. Those four hours for women are great because there are women who are too nervous to go to certain places out of fear or embarrassment of the male-dominated culture, something very prevalent in cycling.
Went there on a Wednesday looking for some parts. When I rolled into the shop, the staff asked me to stop and asked me what I was doing. I told them I was looking for some parts. They told me Males are not allowed on Wednesdays. This is just wrong from there part because I identify as a 2017 Yamaha R1 and they just assumed my gender based on the social construct of human male identity. I explained this to them and they seemed even more pissed. Now they were telling me they cannot allow me in as I identify as a motorcycle instead of a pedal bike. This is just unacceptable and I just accelerated out of the store leaving them in a cloud of white smoke. Blackfoot motorsports it is.
In a misguided attempt to be more accommodating and sensitive to those who otherwise can be mistreated due to their sexual orientation or identification, this place has only succeeded in branding themselves over the top SJWs. Posting visible signage mentioning your patron restricted hours could solve many issues you're facing from disgruntled customers. You're entitled as business owners to have special hours, however you are NOT entitled to be disrespectful to customers you decided can't be served. I'm wary to say you have good intentions, since the blatant rudeness we receive for being "straight" or otherwise non-LGBT makes me think you're possibly heterophobic? Calgary is a big city, with many bike shops. I'd reccomend to anyone to visit another place where you are sure to receive actual customer service.
I have had two bad experiences at this shop in the past two weeks. Do not sign up for a membership unless absolutely necessary. Last week I saw on the web site that used bike donations are accepted during any normal operating hours. So I loaded up some bikes in my vehicle and brought them to the shop around 2pm on a Wednesday. The young lady at the shop barely let me donate the bikes because they were "Closed for a special workshop" I had to be persistent in order to donate the bikes. I was not thanked for my donation in any way. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EVEN GO NEAR THIS SHOP ON A WEDNESDAY. YOU WILL BE DENIED SERVICE. I thought I should give the shop another chance, so I returned to the shop today to see if I could get some repairs and purchase some used parts to fix up my bike. I ended up leaving the shop empty-handed. I had enough money to purchase the parts, and the staff confirmed that the parts were somewhere in the store, but I left without the parts because the staff was unwilling to help me to locate what I needed in their disorganized shop. It might have taken 2 minutes for someone to help me, instead the staff member handed me some kind of stick and told me to figure it out for myself. I wandered around the shop for a couple of minutes and even when I left the staff did not try to stop and ask if they could help me. I was disappointed with this whole experience because I love cycling, I love to repair bikes and the staff at Good Life Community Bicycle Shop really took the wind out of my sails. I will not donate or return to this shop.
