I first noticed this restaurant when I was nearby picking up some Mandi, and it instantly reminded me of Priyanka Chopra’s Sona restaurant in New York City. The glowing reviews caught my attention, so I decided to give it a try a few months later. I visited with my family for dinner, and we found the food to be quite delightful. We ordered butter chicken and malai chicken kebab, and both dishes impressed us with their quality and generous portions. The garlic naan also deserves a mention for its goodness. Even though I live a bit far away, it’s definitely a go-to place in the Ottawa area for fine Indian dining whenever the craving hits.
What a lovely supper experience. The restaurant is very open concept, super high ceilings resulting in fabulous air quality and circulation. They have multiple table setups to accommodate many guests and the occasion at hand. The decor is simple, clean and very inviting and comfortable. Our server was so patient and explained/answered all of our questions about dishes on their menu. We had a difficult time selecting our dishes, so we ordered multiple entrées. Their prices are reasonable AND they also include a generous portion of rice or naan or Roti. There is a very inclusive menu with vegan and vegetarian options. The lamb, chicken, beef were all perfectly cooked, so delicious and tender. They have an excellent selection of dishes where the meat is cooked over charcoal- OMG amazing!! We finished off the meal with a pineapple custard dessert that was excellent. Highly recommend.. #localguide
This place is excellent! Had a great dinner with my friend. This is one of the best indian restaurants in Ottawa for sure; so much variety! And everything was extremely flavorful ^^ including the lentils, chicken 65 appetizer, fish curry, and vegetarian fried cheese with mustard sauce. The server Kinjal and other hosts were extremely nice and provided stellar service : A must visit as culinary experience in Ottawa
Sona is one of the better Indian restaurants in Ottawa. Have been there a couple of times and their food is mostly great. For dinner we ordered the lamb seekh which was perfectly done. Chicken 65 was different from what you'd get at any restaurant in Mumbai and that was a little disappointing. We were expecting a dry dish with a tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves rather than something with a sauce base. The little papads with chutney were good! Their garlic naans were spot on, and probably the best I've had in Ottawa. The chicken do pyaaza was ok, I'd probably stick to their specialties and order from those next time!
What a great place to eat. Went with a couple of friends and was blown away by the food. The price was not bad, and the portion size was great. The service was amazing. They came and checked and were very attentive to our dietary restrictions. I got to say that the Chicken 65 and Madras curry were my top contenders. The flavor and heat were just right. We were even served complimentary Gulab Jamun, which was very nice and not too sugary. When you first enter, it might seem very unsuspecting, but looking past the decor, it was such a lovely place to dine. Dietary restrictions: One of my friend is allergic to tree nuts, and the waiter reassured us that they would try to avoid crosscontamination as best they can.
I recently dined at Sona the Indian restaurant and was thoroughly impressed by both the exquisite cuisine and the impeccable service. The menu showcased a variety of dishes, blending bold flavors and beautiful presentation. The attentive and knowledgeable staff ensured that our meal was a memorable one, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring our satisfaction. I can’t recommend sona restaurant enough for a fantastic dining experience. Best and authentic Indian food in ottawa.
Would've given 5 stars since food was excellent and I love that with each main you can choose from a side dish of rice or naan that is included in the price. Removing one star because as my mom was eating she pulled out a gray/ light coloured hair from her food. We both have black hair so it was not one of ours. We were a little turned off after that so we didn't eat the leftovers. Other than that I'd go back since I did genuinely enjoy the flavours.
Every aspect of our visit from the food to the service was excellent. We ordered the Lamb Rogan Josh and the Chicken Korma with a side of garlic naan. Each curry comes with a choice of rice or naan included, we got rice. Many of the curries allow you to choose the type of meat and there are plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options as well. The curries were rich and creamy and came in very generous portions, I usually always finish the food at restaurants but ended up with leftovers because of the larger portions which was a big plus! The amount of meat in the curries was also larger than other Indian restaurants I’ve visited in Ottawa and the lamb was incredibly tender. Don’t even get me started on the naan, it was so fresh and delicious!! The atmosphere of the restaurant is very pleasant as well, it’s spacious and decorated nicely. The friendly staff were attentive and helpful during our visit. Highly recommend this place! Can’t wait to visit again. Vegetarian options: There are a lot of vegetarian options. There’s a whole section on the menu for veg curries. Dietary restrictions: The menu has information about dietary restrictions for each dish such as what’s gluten free, vegan, etc.
Ottawa's curse for Indian food is real : We had such high hopes for this new restaurant considering the ratings but this turned out to be yet another dissapointing one for those hoping to get GTA flavors here. We ordered chicken 65 and was shocked to get a semi gravy chicken started instead of the usual dry one. The sauce also was weird and tangy. Chicken tikka masala and Karahi sabzji were dissapointing as well as tikka masala sauce tasted same like chicken 65 with weird and unpleasant tanginess. The only decent items were hara bhara kabab and daal makhni but other than that, it was an utter dissapointment. Service was decent but there was no vibe in the place . The flavors were so weird for a North Indian pallet that I had to ask where the chef was from and was told that he was from Uttarakhand, so could be just that we were expecting more North Indian i.e. Delhi/Punjab flavors and was not used to this flavor profile. Vegetarian options: Like any Indian restaurant, have decent selection of vegetarian options
Sona has my heart; this place has so much soul. The food is outstanding and the portions are substantial. I cannot recommend it enough for dine-in or take-out. It’s a local, family/owned business and it shows in everything they do. The entire menu is a hit, whether you like it mild or hot . Every item that comes out of the tandoor is amazing. Somehow, leftovers are even better the next day. Pro tips: - the mint chutney is crack and you will want to eat it on everything, so order extra; - you can never have too much naan; - order a variety of dishes and share with your dining companions + leftovers; - try the tandoori mixed grill ; - check their website for promo codes; and - tell the kitchen Melanie says hi!
