The place was conveniently situated in Dalhousie St. We've ordered Kodanadu Chicken and beef Curry that came with 2 porottas Malabar style bread made from all purpose flour in addition to 3 additional porottas. The beef Curry tasted fine, so was the porottas. However the chicken curry was disappointing, which tasted to me like having made by mixing the refrigerated cooked chicken breast pieces to a curry mixture, which itself wasn't great with taste. The service was good, but the ambience wasn't very great. The washrooms could've been maintained better.
Worst place to call as a South indian restaurant. If you are expecting kerala food, you are in the wrong place. The ambiance was good, and the service for taking the order is good, but always ask them if they are preparing or not after 15 minutes. They missed 2 orders that we ordered, and they were not even aware of that and were asking if they could take the receipt for the food or not. Once you order something, dont expect their service after we get something or part of the order. They will be too busy taking new orders. We ordered 2 coffees and a tea but they missed the tea and about 10 mins after we got the coffee, finally we got the tea. The food is not comparable if you have tasted kerala food from GTA. The biriyanis were like common rice and masala less pieces stuffed between rice. The quantity for different biriyanis was different as we tried both shrimp and beefveal. I am not mentioning the meat temperature, as you can imagine from my previous words. The porotta was comparatively ok, but when we ordered a chicken dish and told to make it less salt, as it was for a pregnant lady, they made the chicken with lots of salt and the rest with less salt. Since we didn't have much time to reorder, as the dish came after about 30 minutes of waiting, we somehow finished half of it, as we were so hungry. Some says food tastes more when we are hungry, but even if in that case, i felt the beef fry which we ordered found to be pleasing at look but felt the meat was bland and from someday frozen. Though you feel a cutlet is cheap for 4 dollars + tax, I didn't feel the same as a plate of cutlet with 2 small pieces of 8$+ tax. I cant finish my review without saying about the much awaited fish thali meals with king fish. The platter was pleasing for the eyes but not for the tongue. The rice was ponni rice like basmati, the white rice. Dont expect the kerala matta rice here and in the thali you will get curd, sambar, pappadam, king fish curry some curry with king fish in it, as I cant say it as a fish curry as I had many from different restaurants in Canada, some gravy with dal, some roast made from eggplant, and 1 more that I cant explain bcz it tasted so bad in a meal. Still they they missed the fish platter that we ordered, and since we didn't have much more to wait there, we continued our way paying the bill.
The Thali meals were delicious, we chose one with King Fish and the other with Butter Chicken. Also tried Beef deep fry BDF as Appetizer was very authentic. Vegetarian options: Vegan options are available, but I think it’s worth for perfect South Indian non vegan recipes. Kid-friendliness: Not much, definitely need a bassinet. Wheelchair accessibility: I didn’t see any wheelchair accessible door.
I would say based on my experience, one of the best Indian restaurants in the Ottawa. Food was awesome. Hospitality was good too. The dish you should try are Thalisveg, non-veg, Goan chicken curry, Mutton curry, Kochin special fish curry. It’s not far from Parliament hill . Definite recommend to those who want to try and enjoy the Indian cuisine in Ottawa.
Kotchin Kitchen is an exceptional South Indian restaurant that truly excels in both its service and its delectable array of dishes. From the moment you step through the door, you are welcomed with warmth and efficiency. The staff's attentiveness and eagerness to accommodate your preferences make dining here a delightful experience. The ambiance is cozy, with a touch of traditional South Indian decor that transports you to the heart of the region. Now, let's talk about the food, which is an absolute gastronomic delight. The biryani, a South Indian classic, is nothing short of spectacular - fragrant, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. The porottas are a must-try, soft and flaky, served piping hot. The thali meal is a feast for the senses, with an array of curries, rice, and accompaniments that showcase the diverse flavors of South India. I must offer a special appreciation to the chef, whose culinary mastery shines through every dish. Kotchin Kitchen is a gem of a restaurant, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone seeking an authentic South Indian dining experience that marries impeccable service with mouthwatering food.
Indian Tea and Mango Lassi were super, big portions. Beef fry is so tasty, must try!! Butter Chicken with Porotta was so delicious. Especially they serve big, fresh Porotta. Only 4 stars, just because they don’t have any ice cream for kids though they are on the menu. Other than that, must try if you’re looking for fine South Indian food. I would go back there, definitely.
Writing this review because of the experience we had. We ordered a bunch of food, specifically told them for one of the curry to put very less salt instead they reduced the salt for everything except for the one which we wanted. Ordered a shrimp biryani which was $19, the rice was flavourless the shrimp was ok but the quantity was very less. Attached a pic comparing both the Biryani’s we ordered. The food took a long time to arrive more than 30 minutes even for the cutlets we ordered. We were almost finished with the food and still hadn’t received a dish which we ordered, when asked they haven’t even started preparing the food. The two good things were porotta and beef fry. The ambience was good but don’t let it fool you. Overall the food we received was bland and not worth the money which we spent. The service was overall poor. Food 1/5 Ambiance 4/5.
Great place to experience authentic food. Place is conveniently located close to Byward market. I order a chicken and veg thali and each of the dish has distinct taste.
We had both Veg/Non-Veg, the taste is really good and we didn’t have any complaints. Taste of mango lassi and lime juice are of different taste, but its good and both the chicken and sea food are fresh, we didn’t feel like its kind of old/frozen ones. would highly recommend this place. The place is clean, staffs are very nice and they explained the dishes to patiently which helps us to decide. Seems like we need to have reservation but we got the table for our lunch.
We went here for a quick lunch and were not disappointed. Tried the fish thali and it was great. Excellent food and the rice and roti were great. Curry portions could have been a bit more and the payasam was a bit watery for my taste but loved the food on the whole.Food: 5/5
