Second time eating here and Shinsen is 2/2 on a great dinner. Highly recommend getting the fried rice. It’s delicious and served in a hot bowl that cooks to a perfect crispiness. The Black Widow specialty roll was tasty and nice spin with the black ink rice. No alcohol, but you can BYOB for a cork fee.
Fantastic Japanese with a Thai twist. The spicy ramen hit the spot and everything else did so too. The owner is 100% on the ball on execution. Highly recommend! See pics!
Hidden gem in Evanston! Had such a great meal & great time loved the ambiance. They really put the extra effort into the presentation & everything looks just as good as it tastes! Our favorite "must get" item was the robata skirt steak! The sushi was high quality, fresh, and the selection was good ended up ordering more of the o toro nigiri Highly recommend trying the Thai iced tea and the miso soup! My date ordered the Tamarind noodles & he said it was also good! Make sure to save room for dessert- everything is made in their kitchen my favorite was the mochi flight No reservations needed as there was plenty of tables available, outdoor seating as well. This is a BYOB restaurant & they dont charge a cork fee.
This place is so underrated. Everything I had here was incredible … especially the steak on the hot rock which is not on the menu by the way, but when I asked they were able to do it! I forgot the official name. The ramen was also fantastic. Great service too! Highly recommend
Cozy environment, great food and good service. We had a fulfilling lunch which included Tamarind noodles chicken, chicken robata, salmon rolls, Yakitori Don with Jasmine tea on the side. Food was tasty and the portion size was appropriate. We will go back there again. I don’t believe they serve alcohol but that is fine. Great gluten free options. This is a gem of a place. You will not be disappointed.

Interesting Thai touches. Tea was great. Cuts of sashimi were thin and not the freshest. But start to finish, food was solid, not special. My wife loved the Black Widow roll which we heard was the most popular, wasn’t my favorite.
Get atmosphere. The calamari and spring rolls were fresh and tasty. Mussels has a very odd odor and was returned. They were kind and removed it from the bill. The tuna avacado roll, tuna nigiri and salmon nigiri were delicious! The black widow roll was mediocre for its price.
If you like sushi and people who care, shinsen is it. They are a small business who cares - it’s shows in their food, top notch fish very important with sushi restaurants and service - even their to go bags. Love this place!
This is the first place I've ever been to with such positive and high ratings. It did not disappoint and is in fact more than deserving of being a 5 star establishment. The ambience, service, and food is top quality. It is a byob restaurant and they do not charge a cork fee. Can it get better? Yes it can. I went with a party of six and we each ordered different platters, all of which were amazing. My favorites were the mussels, black widow roll, and pad thai. The black widow roll had a perfect combination of ingredients and sauce. The mussels had a tasty curry sauce and came with two japanese bun rolls which were exquisite. The pad thai had the perfect blend of sweet and sour with delicate vegetables. The ramen had a comforting taste with a silky broth. The other rolls were also delicious in their own way. The fried rice was alright as it was more on the crispier side and I prefer a softer texture. Lastly, the dessert was exotic and delicate to the taste. Whoever cooked the food made it with passion and talent. I can tell this establishment really cares about serving quality food to it's customers. Bring your own bottles of wine and they'll provide the ice and cups! Our waitress was attentive and kind. I highly recommend anyone in the area or stopping by evanston to give this place a try. It's one of the best restaurants I've been to and I will definitely be coming again. I want to tell everyone about it and bring all my friends-- that's how amazing this place is!
