This was one of the places I was most excited to try when coming to Chicago. I had never seen a roof top Chinese restaurant before especially one that has a dumpling menu. My experience was interesting, firstly getting into the restaurant was a bit of a challenge; but, that was partially due to my own fault. Just be sure to look for the signs as like me you may get lost. If you enjoy a decent bar experience you may want to go to another place first then come here. There is a bar, but it's small and lacks some variation you'd see as places of similar price points. Instead they have a small outside bar that is nice, but doesn't offer the options a true bar would support. I usually always enjoy a cocktail at the bar before dinner and instead we took them to the table as the bar really wasn't conducive for that kind of experience. The atmosphere with the servers seemed more formal and less social than I am used to. The hostess Kimberly was nice enough, and Paula my server was efficient. I had no complaints, but nobody made me or the table feel special. No long term connection that would make me feel like if I came back I'd want to say hello. Although, despite those minor details the food at Shanghai Terrace is great! I ordered Peking Duck, Shanghai Fried Noodles, Crab Siewmai, Shrimp Hot and Sour Soup, and Chinese Style Beef Tenderloin. I loved them all except the Chinese Style Beef Tenderloin. I'm not sure what spice was in the Beer Tenderloin, but there was a flavor I just wasn't able to enjoy; although, my partner loved it so it just depends on your preferences. It does need to be called out that every bit of food is very well prepared and made with quality. If you come here for nothing else the Peking Duck is fantastic and I wish I got more of it.
Such a great restaurant. The atmosphere on the patio is so nice, you can sit a little above Michigan Ave, and you’re surrounded by the lights of the city. The food was phenomenal. Best dumplings I’ve had!
We chose to dine here for my birthday lunch. They had limited vegetarian options on the menu but everything we tried was delicious. The ambience and decor was lovely and it has a great view of the John Hancock tower as well. I imagine it would be lovely during summer nights to dine here. Staff was attentive and great service. Food is a bit pricy but acceptable for a special occasion meal. I greatly appreciate the dessert that was served on the house for my birthday. The hotel is stunning inside and worth a walk around to see it.
The restaurant is located inside the Penisula Hotel. First of all, the decor is very beautiful and has a great vibe. This is Chinese fine dining so expect to spend about 100 per person. The food is fantastic, very authentic Chinese food. We had the xiao long bao, the full Peking duck, Dong po rou and the seafood fried rice with abalone sauce. Every dish is cooked to perfection and was delicious.
Nice location in the peninsula hotel. Has nice relaxed ambience. Food was very light and elegant. Service and staff pleasant and excellent
One of the best Chinese restaurants j’ve been to! The food had an amazing subtle taste and was sooo delish! Lots of veggie options!
Everything was absolutely delicious and the service was phenomenal. We had the wonton soup, three treasures fried rice, crab sieumai, lobster & chicken dumpling with black truffle, and steamed pork dumplings. The staff was very attentive but not overbearing, and had excellent suggestions.
Usually really good service here & excellent dim sum. Although, it really grossed me out that the wait staff was wearing gloves. Unless gloves are changed extremely frequently and properly, they become a vector for further contamination spread and may even discourage the user from hand washing. Please don't wear gloves! Wash your hands!!
Fantastic service, incredible food. We sampled the dim sum and the peking duck. Both were loved by our group. Our server was highly attentive and welcoming. It was one of the most enjoyable meals I've had in a long time. I can't recommend the Shanghai Terrace enough.
This is a must-go place if you like Chinese food. The Peking duck originated from Beijing, China. But Shanghai Terrace has the best duck in Chicago. The service is really good. We’ve tried serval dishes, all of which were very tasteful . However , the price is relatively high . Take that into consideration prior to making the reservation. :
