I recall dining in this location back when it used to be a smorgasbord place eons ago. A bit confusing because they still have signage up for Wah Lun. Inside, they were quite busy during dim sum. Solid Cantonese-style dim sum. Tender beef tripe and homestyle vermicelli were my fav. Definitely want to come back to try their lobster/crab dishes.
Day Date! Found ourselves @ Ryan's Chinese Restaurant aka Wah Lun. This is an unassuming restaurant, both inside & out, but omgoodness the dim sum was amazing! Having a Chinese Grandma & growing up in Vancouver I've been to my fair share of dim sum restaurants, but we always tend to get the same stuff. As it was just myself & @proud_poppa5 we decided to try mostly new dishes. We ordered the following: Deep Fried Shrimp Purée Dumpling - These dumplings were huge! They had so much shrimp filling & they were not greasy at all. They had a great crunch to them & the sweet sauce was a nice accompaniment. Deep Fried Squid w/Peppery Salt - This dish is actually one we always order & this place does it fantastically! The squid was perfectly cooked with a nice light crunchy batter. The chilli, onion, garlic mixture was delicious. We cleaned that plate if I wasn't so full I would have ordered another one. Deep Fried Taro Paste w/Portuguese Sauce - I'm not a huge fan of this dish, in other restaurants I've had it at it's always been cold. Here it was lava hot! While I'm still not 100% sold on this dish, if you're a fan of it elsewhere you'll love it here. Steamed Milky Bun w/Egg Yolk - omgoodness, I could not stop eating these! These were the best I have ever had & even better than some of the fancy dim sum restaurants. The bun was very light & melted in your mouth. The egg yolk was a little sweet & a little salty & oh so delicious! Rice Flour Rolls w/Crispy Bean Curd & Fish Paste - this was our final dish & unfortunately I was full at that point to fully enjoy & appreciate it. I did love the different textures of this dish. The smooth rice roll, the crunchy bean curd & the fluffy savoury fish paste. The service was quick & courteous, somewhat typical for a dim sum place. The prices are very reasonable, although they do charge $2 for tea & hot water. Definitely a hidden gem that I would visit again. Maybe next time we'll bring the family. @inspiringfoodie
If you order online choose all your items, then add them to your cart. I chose as I searched the menu, so when I went to checkout my session had timed out and it lost the order. I had to go through it all again and write down my numbers to order. When I got there to pick up they said they don't constantly check the website. So if you order and want it right away, I suggest you call. Also they don't do any dim sum after 3pm, and the coupons only apply for delivery. The food was okay. The pork was a little fatty for my preference. The chow mein noodles and vegetables were a little crunchy; which I like. It was good value as I got 3 dishes and have 4-5 meals.
My Uncle took my son and I out for lunch for Dim Sum around 1pm. I like the fact that they don't have carts and that you order from a picture menu and place your order on an order form and once filled you hand it to the server. The Pork sui mai, beef ball, scallop and shrimp dumpling, and beef rice flour roll were the stand outs. I've had better chicken feet and Pork footballs. I enjoyed the Gai Lan, and steamed spareribs with pumpkin. The stuffed eggplant was nice too. I think we ate too fast. We even took leftovers home.
Cheap but horrible service like most of these places. The server pushed my sister out of the way rudely just to get chairs. Touching customers is UNACCEPTABLE. I’ve been coming here for over a decade— since I was a child. The food is not that bad. They actually listen when you request for less salt/oil. It’s also not that expensive compared to others. However, the service like I mentioned earlier, can get quite rude. I’m Canadian so I’m not used to it, though I’ve been told this is “normal” in Asian culture. I’ve been here long enough to see the restaurant change ownership many many times. Sadly their attitude doesn’t get any better. There are times when there’s new employees new to this rough environment and they can be extremely nice. Today though, I was very disappointed when this new employee got reprimanded by a rude staff for bumping into her. The parking is also really chaotic. Getting a seat at mealtimes is like getting a tv on sale on Black Friday. Asides from all that, this place is not bad. Come for the cheap food but beware of the service you get. Worth it or not is up to you to decide.
Very good dimsum and efficient no nonsense service. Will surely be back for more.
Average dim sum but it's location is good because there's not much competition. Typical dim sum dishes in the morning to the early afternoon.
Decent place for dim sum. Nothing super fancy or special. Food does come out as hot and decently fresh. Little parking lot located to the right side of the restaurant.
Haven’t been here in a while. But I remember the food here was great! Today I came for dim sum with my parents and the first dish came out cold. It was the baked bbq pork bun. The waitress was confused as I told her. I placed the ICE cold bun on her hand and she took it back to microwave it and returned it. All the dishes don’t taste like what I remember. I’m sad.
Had a great first experience here takeout. Deep fried squid was great -- did not have too much batter or grease. Flat noodles in black bean sauce was smoky and delicious, one of the best versions of the dish I've had recently. Service is efficient, and there's a parking lot right next to the place. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu.
