Came here with the family for early dinner on Saturday. We were seated in the middle of an empty dining room upstairs instead of by a window with a nice view to keep the kids entertained. We ordered veal Parmesan, baked ziti and some other dishes. Warning: NO choices for the kiddos, so be ready to get creating with side dishes. I would not consider any single dish to be flavorful. Noodles, basic tomato sauce, bunch of mozzarella cheese on top. None of it was any special except for the prices. Service staff is not very helpful so unless you understand how each dish is served you will be eating leftovers for the next three days. We were told that the 3% service charge automatically added to your bill is to offset the prices listed in the menu. One of the waiters informed us that the restaurant didn’t want to spend the money printing new menus with updated prices and instead are adding 3% service charge at the end of the meal. This charge is added automatically but it’s optional to pay. With so many great new style Italian restaurants in the city I guess it’s time for us to venture out in search for a great Italian meal.
I’m happy with picking this place when there’s a plethora of Italian restaurants just like it. Every dish I saw others eat look filling and picturesque, so that was my first impression that I was in for a treat. It’s on the expensive side but it’s an experience. Upon entry you see a wall of celebrities that have been there. I chose to sit inside the restaurant but on a nicer day probably would’ve sat on the patio. It’s all about preference. Didn’t like the shrimp ala rosebud. BREAD is dry and served cold. Balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil is all anything that can help it. Server was helpful. I was looking forward to the Veal Parmesan and exceeded my expectations. The caprese salad is exceptional. My buddy got the linguine with clams and garlic bread.
Super awesome staff. Pluses include location being relatively in the heart of downtown a block or 2 from mag mile. Ample parking spaces in the area. Great and speedy service. We ordered and had our food out in less than 20 minutes. They were able to squeeze our last minute reservation in and seated us even though we were a little early. Would highly recommend!
A Chicago icon, also the best value for restaurant week I've ever seen. For $55 you received a 5 course meal, not joking! We had mushrooms amazing!, Calamari terrible, Cesar salad and caprese, great!, And a vodka pasta and cheese ravioli, both good in their different sauces, and for the main chicken parmesan and a small steak. Pics attached Both did not seem like smaller portions at all! Finally at the end we got the cheesecake, order this! we were so full we only wanted the one dessert to share. Outside of restaurant week get the lasagna, one of my favorite dishes in all of Chicago! I've been here 5+ times and have never been disappointed, such a great spot for a date night or larger group. When i lived in Chicago, j used to come here for brunch and people watch on their bistro. Now i come here at least once during my visits to Chicago. I wasn’t able to wait for a table outside because I was on schedule. Sat on the basement for the very first time. Good service and atmosphere, as per usual.
This restaurant can be summed up by somewhat large portions of italian food that is quite subpar at best. The fact that I prefer Olive Garden over this by a longshot should tell you everything you need to know. The fried calamari was chewy and not cooked tender. If a fine dining establishment can mess up a simple calamari thats a bad sign. The portion size was okay. The veal parm was a great portion but messy and ridiculous amount of cheese. The breading was a soggy mush due to the cheeese and sauce and the veal itself was so thin that it bordered on overcooked. The shrimp bisque my brother had .. had not even a piece of shrimp on top. Just a few croutons. You would think it wouldnt hurt to put some actual solid pieces of shrimp in a shrimp bisque. The server however was very polite and nice.. to us anyways. Heard him being super aggressive with one couple but no idea about what.. it was upon them leaving. Will not be returning.
Bellisimo. Beautiful, romantic, quiet and pretty much perfect. The food was wonderful! So satisfying that it felt like home. The service was extremely good, prompt, professional, friendly and funny. We also had two of the best martinis in Chicago! I liked being in the main dining room but I bet the porch is nice in good weather. I think my favorite thing was the lighting-sometimes good lighting can really make an evening memorable.
It feels like an old-school Italian restaurant. I was extremely disappointed. The food lacked flavor and was Luke warm. I would never return. I saw the ratings and thought this going to be great and was let down. The service was great the staff was friendly and made my stay enjoyable. I was also thrown off by the air conditioning running in January, it was freezing in there. There are better choices at this price point. I would have given one star but the staff was amazing.
We live 2 blocks away from Rosebud on Rush but have only been here 3 times and couting in the past 15 years. There is no particular reason but we normally favor newer style Italians and chop houses. Rosebud is an Italian classic, which is a dying breed even in Chicago. The location is perfect for tourists just a block off Michigan Ave and Fifth Ave shops. For people who love Classic Italian, simple, flavorful and mastered by the house tomato sauce, this is a must visit, meaning people from the burbs and or people over 50. The flavors are perfectly balanced, not over powering with garlic and butter. If you look at the bottom of your dish, even for a heavy cheese dish, whether Chicken Parm or Alfredo, you don't see a lot of oil floating about. I think this could be one of the reason why some people find it unflavorful because they miss the heavy creame and butter from Maggianos. The service was also on point, time perfectly. Great crew. We walk our dogs past this place almost everyday for the past 15 years and have never seen any confusions and mishaps even during rush hours. If you have neve been, this is a true Chicago icon and classic you must visit. The one star is for the prices, comparatively speaking it is at least 10% higher then other steaks and chops downtown. But who knows, it could be the rent.
A classic red-sauce Italian joint in the heart of downtown. It was packed and had a great energy. We had a 730 reservation for my mother's 80th birthday. They accommodated us early, and we started with the mussels in garlic butter sauce, followed along with their clams casino. Both were excellent. A bread basket also arrived with a great assortment. We were not rushed at all and had a casual meal, and we were happy with the service by Elsa. She was attentive, informative, and excellent at her job. Our meals consisted of veal parmigiana for me, tortellini carbonara wife, lamb chops aunt, and shrimp scampi for the birthday girl. I loved my veal parm. Filleted and pounded paper-thin and ginormous. The side of pasta was cooked al dente. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, except the scampi was breaded and fried, which we were not expecting. A great meal, and I would recommend it to others and return. Bon apperiz
