Resto Gare And Train Bar

About

Resto Gare is an authentic French restaurant in the St Boniface French Quarter, offering full bilingual service, and contemporary French cuisine.

Story

“The venerable La Vieille Gare received a facelift (in April 2008), when owner Linda Love peeled away 30 years of white tablecloth dining to reveal Resto Gare, a fresh bistro. If La Vieille Gare was like a distinguished grandmere, then Resto Gare is a hip mama.
With renovations, the space remains one of Winnipeg’s most stunning dining rooms. Historic elements like dark wood framing, grand lighting fixtures and railcar lounge speak of the building’s train station past. Scarlet drapes and elegant upholstery emanate subtle sexiness. A gigantic lipstick red booth now divides the large dining room, and the best seat to snuggle with a date is in front of the industrial-chic fireplace. CIAO Magazine (Feb 2009)

Resto Gare Bistro is the most authentic French restaurant in the St Boniface French Quarter, offers full bilingual service and plays the latest Montreal francophone music. A trip to Winnipeg should include a trip to the French Quarter and we would be pleased if you included Resto Gare Bistro on your itinerary.

Our experience here was perfect! Even with a party of 8 (including kids), we were served quickly and warmly. The food was amazing, and eating in the train car was a great experience. Obviously, the place is pricey, but even the little bit of leftovers I took home was better reheated than some food I've had in other places! I'm not familiar with French food, so I can't speak to it's authenticity, but the joy taken in serving us was definitely genuine.

Recently went to Resto Gare on a Saturday night for a date night out. We requested to sit in the train car, and the ambiance and decor was very wonderful. The dining room looked nice, but was very loud, so I'm glad we got to sit in the car. The only con of the car was that throughout the night, the heat went off, and it got very chilly very quickly. But a kind waiter quicklyturned the heat up, so we didn't have to shiver for long. It's an old car and Winnipeg is freezing in January, not their fault at all. The cocktails we ordered were fantastic. So was the food, save for the escargots...my partner and I both agreed that the beef sauce was way too heavy for escargot. A lighter sauce would have been preferable. The breads in the bread basket were super fresh and to die for. The mussels were excellent. Our mains were awesome as well, and so was the sugar maple pie for dessert. I think everything here is priced at a very reasonable amount for the quality of food and portion sizes. You can tell a lot of effort goes into preparing the food. The only reason why this review is four stars out of five is due to service. I worked in the hospitality industry myself for many years, so I'm very understanding and patient when dining out because I've been in a server's shoes, but this place has five star food and three star service. Our waitress was polite and friendly enough, but seemed to be stressed out all evening, running from table to table, and forgetting to come back to us. It took ages to get a water refill, the dirty dishes sat on our table for a very long time, and our three course meal lasted three hours due to the amount of time left in between courses. It took twenty minutes for her to bring us our cocktails, and another twenty minutes for dessert, for instance. I feel like the server must have been fairly new, or very stressed out with the amount of guests she was taking care of. More training or better staffing could help with this issue. Overall I think Resto Gare is absolutely worth a visit. It could easily be one of the finest restaurants in town if service were to improve.

LOVE this place. Absolutely one of my favourites in the city. Great staff and great food. Always enjoy a good hearty meal here for an affordable price.

Excellent evening. Food was great, very tasty. The bœuf bourguignon was superb, so too the French Onion soup. A timeless French classic done perfectly. Baked brie, with apricot jelly and pecan nuts. Now was this a surprise! I usually bake my cheeses with rosemary or thyme, and chardonnay. The sweet worked perfectly here. My next baked brie will be with my mothers homemade apricot jam. We will be back, there's a substantive menu we need to explore. Kudo's for seeing my favorite South African wine on the wine list. From the town of Stellenbosch, where I was born and raised, before immigrating tio Canada at age 48, Post House Missing Virgin Pinotage.a Classic Pinotage and Petit Verdot blend. brilliant wine. Cant believe it took me 4 years in Winnipeg before finally making it to Resto Gare. We will be back. There is a rack of lamb with my name on it...

Went here with a group of over 20 people from work. Sat in the train which is lovely but a bit cramped in a large group as it makes conversing difficult. The plan was for everyone to choose from 4 prechosen menu choices, but I was told that if you don't like any of the 4 choices you could order off the menu. As it turned out I didn't want to order one of the 4 choices, so I mentioned to the waitress that I wanted to order off the menu. The waitress was very upset with this & told me that the chef had spent a lot of time preparing the 4 choices today, so he wants us to choose from what he prepared. I explained that i understand this, but none of the choices appeal to me & that i wasnt hungry for a 4 course meal. The waitress went back & forth me explaining the same thing over & over again. Finally she said that she would have the manager come & speak with me. She returned shortly thereafter & said that the manager agreed to allow me to order off the menu, but next time it won't be allowed‼ The food i received was good & was made correctly. The meal was to have coffee/tea included, but the waitress said that since she is the only server she couldn't get our bills handed out & our coffee served at the same time. There were several servers standing around who could have helped, but it seemed that it just was too much effort required to provide the service. Half an hour later she did offer the coffee & tea to everyone, but by then most of our group had left. My experience & rating of this restaurant would have been higher if the service would have been better.
