Pioneer House Restaurant

About

A Fully Licensed Casual Dining experience nestled in the heart of the Cowichan Valley on southern Vancouver Island - where old time atmosphere meets exquisite modern homecooking. We are located just south of Duncan at the popular Whippletree Junction.

Story

Our history begins with the story behind our old saloon bar, which came from Butte, Montana. It originally stood in the St. Francis Saloon from 1890-1971, and is said to have been witness to many a quarrelsome card game, dancing cancan girls, and perhaps even a few gun fights in its day! The bar is constructed of solid oak and mahogany with handcarved accents, and still bears the original marks and woodstain.

In the 1970s, Whippletree Junction’s founder Randy Streit stumbled upon the bar, still standing proudly in the St. Francis Saloon in the deserted old copper mining town. He dismantled the bar and brought it home to Canada with him. In order to house his new acquisition, he sold a plot of land to Paul Watson with a promissory note requesting the buyer to build a structure specifically designed to accomodate the bar. Thus, the plans for Pioneer House came to life. A handsome piece of construction in its own right, the log-style building only serves to compliment the bar perfectly.

The Pioneer House Restaurant’s current owners Shelagh John & son Gerald have been proudly sharing their valuable treasure with you and your family since 1977. In keeping with our location at the famous Whippletree Junction just south of Duncan, BC, our old-time atmostphere offers you a warm and unique dining experience complete with our menu of delicious housemade recipes that are sure to tempt your appetite and satisfy your hunger.

This awesome log house building is the perfect setting for the ultimate "home cooked" meal...you would surmise. It was a real disappointment. At first the lengthy wait to be seated conducted by a disinterested hostess who took her sweet time in seating people. The waitress though was efficient and friendly and got our food to us in a reasonable amount of time considering the place was very busy. The baron of beef was greasy, tasteless and looked like leftover meat from a few days back. The fish was soggy and tasteless, with the batter soft and soggy..blah. Don't think I'll try this place again. Also, way overpriced!
Pioneer house is a Cowichan Valley staple. People called it the log house for awhile. It has a rustic feel but with good food and good service. They have an ecclectic menu with no super specializations but the food arrives tasty. The burgers are usually quite good and the egg's benny on the brunch menu are delicious. They often try a variety of bbq during the summer that leads to some interesting menus. They have both inside and outside seating, with the outside seating providing a wall that blocks some traffic noise and wind or grit from the nearby highway, roads and parking lot. The inside seating can be near the gorgeous bar, or closer to the buffalo head and fireplace. When busy they also open up the upstairs section which is small tables for two people overlooking the whole restaurant. Parking is available from the parking lot and is free. The restaurant is reasonably close to a few bus routes but it will still be a walk.
This log cabin restaurant is authentic through and through. It's off of the highway South of Duncan. The staff are genuine. The special of Maple Eggs Benedict on French Toast was creative and delicious. I'm definitely going to return.
This is a great place to go for breakfast or dinner. The staff is always friendly, efficient, and the food is excellent. They have a great selection of desserts including an entire glass cabinet of freshly made on-site baked pies. The atmosphere is very nice, in a large building made of logs, a gas fireplace, a bar, and wooden tables and chairs. Coffee and soft drink refills are free, and the food has always been good when I've gone there. We go for breakfast approximately twice a month and dinner maybe once a month and have for the last year or so. If you're looking for a decent place to go out too, with great food and good service, this is it.
Brought the family in for a Monday lunch, everyone enjoyed their food. Really good selection and the prices were decent. Service was fast and friendly. Only minor gripes was that the place seemed very hot, the "smoothie" was basically just blended sorbet, and I'd like to have the option of how my eggs were served on the huevos rancheros. But overall was quite impressed and will return.
Yummy as usual. Early bird Prime Rib. Love it
Stopped in for lunch at about 130 on a Sunday. It was busy there was a short wait, fine. Were given a small table for 2 for 3 of us. Needed a highchair for my toddler so not a lot of table space. When we were seated we were asked what we would like to drink. Asked for waters. Weren't given a kids menu either so was waiting to ask for one when someone brought waters and checked on us. After more than 10 minutes no one had come to our table to check on us, bring us waters nothing. We left. Terrible experience
Staff was very polite and efficient. The breakfast was decent but I've had better dinners here. Not sure why there are red cups hanging above the tables. The decor needs a little updating. Overall satisfied with the food and service. Would recommend to anyone.
Early bird Prime rib special comes with a huge Yorkshire pudding. Chicken and waffles is delicious, loved the breading on the chicken both for flavour and texture. Reservations recommended as they fill up fast. Can be noisy. Friendly service and when they put up seasonal decorations they really go all out.
Came in for lunch, with reservation. Had to wait 10 minutes past our reservation time for our table. Took another 15 minutes to get our coffee. Once our order was taken it took 1 hour and 12 minutes to receive our food. Saw the server twice in this time, the second time were told the food was on its way, received it 20 minutes later. We watched other tables show up after us and receive food before we did. Two stars only because the food was good. Service is great, if you have all day to wait.
