Oorja
"Through Oorja, we aim to create a restaurant inspired by the flavors of Hakka, primarily Indo Chinesecuisine, where the emphasis is placed on fresh ingredients and great service. We take pride in the foodthat we create, and it is our ambition to bring this vibrant and culturally rich cuisine to Montreal. As both a restaurant and a cocktail bar, our objective is to shape a fun and dynamic environmentcentered around a unique culinary experience. Our team will create dishes and cocktails made fromquality seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers. Indo Chinese cuisine is surprisingly absentfrom Montreal, and we believe that its vibrance and imaginativeness will be very well received."

Growing up on Indo-Chinese, I wanted to try some Hakka cuisine, finally one in Montreal. Came for my friend’s birthday and the experience was decent. Ordered a drink each which wasn’t my favourite honestly. I got the mango and my friend got the cashew, both left to be desired. Flavour was super mild but decent amount of liquor. The appetizers were the main star of the show, if it were the only thing judged then easily a 5/5 stars. The entrees were super flavourful especially with the mint chutney get extra on the side. Really recommend the sweet and sticky Lollipop Chicken and Lamb Spring Rolls if you like the flavour of lamb as it’s super forward. We also go the duck wings, really good as well and nice experimentation. Large pieces. The braised pork was super chewy at parts and lacked complexity, it was mainly super salty and greasy more than anything. Chicken Manchurian was alright, but would much rather prefer the authentic way with actual chicken pieces inside rather than chicken meatballs. And the noodles were super bland. Expected more honestly. The whole restaurant floor was super sticky so didn’t love that. However, the server and barman were super nice and thoughtful. In sum, would recommend but skip out on the mains and share the appetizers with friends/family/date. 4.2/5
Came here for a friend’s birthday. Our server was great. The food was good but the prices were a bit high for the portion sizes. I tried the lamb spring rolls which were phenomenal and the salad appetiser which was also good but not sure how the price is justified. The music was quite loud and the bathrooms are oddly located without hooks for your bag, etc. By the time we left, the restaurant was entirely full and we physically had a hard time leaving due to how many tables were squeezed into the place. Overall the place is nice but not sure I would return.
Had high hopes from this place, unfortunately, not impressed. The portion of the noodles for the 3 main courses we ordered fluctuated with each dish. Noodles were tasty though. The veg manchurian did not meet my expectations, the veggies didn’t have any texture. The chili momos were decent. Only the chicken manchurian had the perfect gravy to noodles ratio and was the best out of what we ordered. I see this place is really popular, but the tables are too close together and it can feel over crowded. Not a family restaurant for sure. We arrived 45 mins before our reservation and thankfully were seated promptly but the service definitely needs improvement.
A great new resto in town in the Hakka ethnic cuisine variety. Great vibes, nice decor small seat restaurant. Unfortunately we did not get to experience all the dishes as the waitor forgot about us and the kitchen closed. Of what we did have mussels, dumplings and Asian salad was really good. I will go back to try the remainder. The only Hakka restaurant in town to my knowledge.
Overall, Oorja was a good place for a great cocktail and shareable entrees. The place was nicely designed, and the atmosphere was good to have a nice chat with friends. The cocktails were all delicious and definitely different. We had a few entrees to share, and my favorites were the duck wings and lamb spring rolls. I would recommend them for sure!! The main dishes were a little more disappointing. My braised pork was a little tough on some bites, and the white rice was either mushy and not cooked on some parts. The paneer chili was quite tasty and an original take on sweet chili sauce dish. The chicken chili was very similar to what you would get in a Chinese restaurant but with a higher price tag. In the end, I would recommend that if you are looking for good cocktails and tasty entrees.
Had a delicious meal at this new Indo-Chinese restaurant in St Henri. All dishes were generous portions and well flavoured. Got two appetizers and two mains between two people. If you’re sharing dishes ensure to ask the waiter about the sauces as some of the sauces between the appetizer and mains are shared/similar.
First hakka restaurant in Montreal and it did not disappoint. A hype place in St-Henri serving great Indo-Chinese food. The chili momos are to die for and the chili chicken is amazing. Love their drinks and everything is so pleasing to the eye. We will definitely be going back again and again.Food: 5/5
The food is really very close to the Indo-Chinese Hakka cuisine. But I can imagine it might be a little too spicy for some people. So just ask before you order. Ordered one cocktail and it was well made. Would love to see cauliflower lollipop for vegetarians. Vegetarian options: Decent vegetarian options
Excellent Hakka style restaurant in Montreal. We enjoyed every bite of all the dishes we ordered. The owner and the waitress were so nice that we became friends. Couldn’t be more satisfied. Highly recommended.Food: 5/5
Loved the food, drink and amazing service I had the crime of passion to drink, yum. The Momo vegan steamed dumplings, great. Loved the paneer chilli with noodles, perfect. The guy serving all alone, but served us like superman, he needs help, this is a message to the owner, thanks Food: 5/5
