Liked their coconut and mango based jelling bowls. Came here twice recently w family. August 2023 The upkeep of the stores appearance could be bit better, but the service and food is good. Will be back for more tmrw
I haven't tried their savory dishes yet because every time I come to Sugar Marmalade, it's for their desserts, which I really love. I've tried their Sago and Grass Jelly desserts but my favourite has to be their Shaved Ice, more specifically the Matcha flavour one with the Red Bean and Pearl Delight. It's a big overflowing portion so it's very easy to share between two people. The last time we came here, it was right after lunch on a Thursday. They were busy with delivery and takeout but we had the whole place to ourselves to enjoy our dessert. The decor is cute, and I like the pictures and funny quotes on their wallpaper. My only complaint is that I wish they were more attentive to the cleanliness of their restaurant. The tables, chairs, floor, dishes and utensil looked clean but some of the glassware for example, water pitchers could use some scrubbing and the bathroom could be cleaned more frequently. Also, some of the reviews here mentioned a smell in the restaurant, I noticed it too and I thought it might be the smell of durian, which is an option to some of their desserts? Or it could be the bathroom like others were saying. For the Shaved Ice, definitely 5 stars. For the overall experience, 4 stars.
Sugar Marmalade, nestled in the heart of Montreal's vibrant Chinatown, is situated just a leisurely 5-minute walk from the Place-d'Armes metro station, its accessibility is undeniably a draw. However, this accessibility is somewhat overshadowed by the neighborhood's recurring challenge of limited parking options, which can pose a potential deterrent for some visitors. One of the most unfortunate aspects that must be addressed is the restaurant's lack of wheelchair accessibility. In an era where inclusivity is increasingly valued, this shortcoming stands out glaringly and limits the establishment's appeal to a wide range of potential patrons. On the brighter side, the service I encountered during both of my visits was a pleasant surprise. During my initial experience, the restaurant was bustling, nearly full to the brim with eager diners. Despite this, the wait time for my order was impressively short, showcasing an efficient and attentive staff. My second visit, though less crowded, mirrored the same level of promptness and warmth from the service team. However, my culinary exploration at Sugar Marmalade was limited to their specialty drinks, and I can only comment on that aspect. Visually, the drinks were a treat, presented with care and attention to detail. Yet, as the saying goes, appearances can be deceiving. Regrettably, the taste of the drinks failed to match their enticing presentation. Each sip left me with a sense of mediocrity, a lukewarm response that echoed in their tepid temperatures. While not outright unpleasant, the flavors failed to ignite any culinary excitement, rendering them simply 'okay' at best. In the vast landscape of Montreal's culinary scene, Sugar Marmalade finds itself amidst a sea of options, each vying for attention and loyalty. Unfortunately, its specialty drinks, while visually appealing, do not manage to stand out in a city renowned for its diverse and exceptional gastronomic offerings. While its convenient location and efficient service warrant recognition, the lackluster taste experience and absence of true culinary distinction make it a challenge to declare an enthusiastic return. In a city that tantalizes taste buds at every corner, Sugar Marmalade struggles to leave a lasting impression.
Great place for all kind of tasty desserts. The mango and strawberries shaved ice was pretty good. The waiting was short considering how packed it was on a late Friday evening. The staffs were friendly.
Amazing prices and delicious food! Tofu pudding was kinda watery but still great. Mango shaved ice was to die for!! So much flavour and the portion was huge!
Everything tasted neither bad nor good, some of the mangoes in the creamy mango juice were brown/black... Not really fresh...
Pretty good desserts. I loved the honey melon shaved ice but really wasn’t a fan of the pancakes, it was way too sweet and the cream tasted artificial. However I loved the mango milk tea. Overall a decent experience 7/10
The shaved ice here has a lot of customization possible and is very good and refreshing. We took mango shaved ice and popping yoghurt + lychee jelly
The food is really good, I got the marshmallow toast, but it took an hour to get my order. The website does mention a 15 minute cooking time, but I ordered at 8h27 and got it at 9h25. Ridiculous wait time. I had the exact same experience a few months ago, I figured it may be that they were short staff that day or something, so I let it slide...but clearly it's the norm. Please work on this, I really want to come back and enjoy the food, but I can't sit there an hour each time.
We are often going there to get dessert for take out because we really love the dessert there and it’s always long to wait for it but last time we decided to eat there… as usual it’s super long to received the food and the restaurant was smelling like cat litter the smell was almost unbearable! The system to order is very convenient since we are ordering on our phone but they did a mistake in my order and they bring me the pancake mango but I don’t like mango and she make me feel bad for not taking it anyways but I explained it wasn’t what I ordered…and I don’t like mango at all… we were 3 and all got our dessert at different time but like 10-20 minutes difference in between all 3 desserts, after when we went to pay it’s written in Chinese that it’s 10% off when we pay cash so we told her we are paying cash and my bf is half Chinese so he understood and when she gave us our receipt he ask why the 10% wasn’t there and she was like embarrassed didn’t think we would understand the sign… so she did one for us after with the 10% off. Not a big deal but funny. But yeah the place definitely need to get rid of the cat littler smell… although the dessert are really worth it.
