The best milk around but don't just go for the milk products, their lunch, coffee, sandwiches, soups and paninis are not to be missed!Food: 5/5
Fantastic place to grab a bite….. the milk is great to…. They are joined or are part of the Avalon dairy.. This is a small place with some out door seating…. If you go at lunch, I hope you get a seat…. Their beef dip is great..
Started drinking Avalon milk exclusively and has been a fan! You can refund the glass bottles at the store and after the refund it's a cheaper and greener option for milk. We tried their cheese and chocolate milk there and we also liked it as well. We sat down and bought a sausage roll but it was super cold in the middle and had to ask for reheating.
Italian Panini with garden salad. It was pretty amazing, quick and delicious.
After walking along the Fraser River in Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park, we decided to have a quick bite but quickly realized that being in an office/industrial area, we don't have much choice. Luckily, Old Farmhouse Kitchen was still open and very close. Since we came forty minutes before closing, I didn't get to try food items I was interested in since they ran out of them. We still got a few things, including vanilla milkshake and latte, to highlight Avalon's main product, which is milk. I tried Avalon produce before, so I was delighted with both items. The milkshake was simply perfect and not too sweet. The interior is pretty cool and cozy with lots of great decorations. We ended up getting some milk produce to go. Overall it was a great experience, and I can see myself coming back. I only wish this joint was located somewhere more accessible.
Tldr: photograph your bottle returns outside the door right before you go in to return them. On two occasions the manager I think has been fairly rude and created an uncomfortable situation re bottle returns. We get milk delivered and do large batch bottle returns. Last time, after I had put the bottles away, I was told I needed to have staff count the bottles. There is no sign indicating this policy and I had never been asked before. I had never seen anyone else asked to do this before I've been a customer for about 3 years, I go in every month or two. I was looking pretty messy that morning and the impression I got from the conversation was that he was reading into my look and thinking I was going to scam a dollar or two. I left feeling really uncomfortable. My husband told me he had a similar situation with the same man, where he was told that the amount he was returning was wrong, and we were shorted one bottle. He didn't feel it was worth arguing. Since then he always photographs the bottles first. If staff counting of bottles is a policy or a policy above a certain number of bottles - put up a sign! Do not arbitrarily pick people to make an exception with. And someone give this guy some training in customer service/edi. Ps. The rest of the staff is lovely and the products are good.
The cafe is located near the industrial area and hence a little out of the way. It is near the Fraser river though, so a meal before or after a walk by the river is always fun! The servers were friendly and food was served promptly. The food seemed fresh and I also bought a chocolate cookie. It was great! It wasn’t too sweet; just right for my taste buds! I’m not sure if there are discounts for the diary products sold here, but they do have a variety: milk, yogurt, ice cream, and even homemade soup! I purchased one to try and it was savoury, but it is still best to have it in store.
If you’ve ever found yourself in the dairy aisle of your local grocery store, you’ve probably heard of Avalon Dairy. This local dairy producer has been around the Vancouver area for a very, very long time. A number of years ago, they moved their location over to North Fraser Way in Burnaby and have a small eatery at this location called Old Farmhouse Kitchen. Nestled in an industrial complex, it’s easy to bypass this place if you didn’t know it was here. I wound up ordering the Loaded Beef Dip $8.99 and paired it with a Strawberry Milkshake $5.99 – because why wouldn’t you order a milkshake from a place known for their milk?!? The first issue that I had on this visit was that my strawberry milkshake wasn’t a strawberry milkshake… it appeared to be a plain milkshake. I didn’t say anything because I thought perhaps they didn’t hear me right. In any case, I found the milkshake to be a bit meh since it wasn’t very thick. Perhaps the strawberry flavoured one would have been better. They have some seating inside this store/restaurant so I ordered my meal for dine-in as opposed to take-out. When they called my name, I was a bit surprised that they put my beef dip in a take-out container. Again, I didn’t say anything because I figured it was probably an honest mistake as they looked like they did a lot of take-out orders. The thing that was inexcusable, however, was when I opened the take-out box and discovered that they didn’t give me the au jus for the beef dip! Seriously? That’s the thing that makes a “beef dip” a “beef dip”… the “dip”! This was something that I couldn’t leave as-is so I went back to the counter and asked whether or not my beef dip was supposed to come with any “dip”. They looked a bit confused at first but then realized they didn’t give me the au jus so they went and ladled out some au jus for me. As for the beef dip itself, it was okay… the bun was crusty and it had caramelized onions and melted cheese and was accompanied with a side of coleslaw. I wasn’t overly thrilled with either the food or service on my first visit but I’ll probably try for a revisit to see if this was just a one-off. As it turned out, I came back for a revisit in the following month and ordered the Tuna Melt $6.99 and Hot Chocolate $2.79. The sandwich comes with your choice of a side and I picked the coleslaw again as it has right amount of crunchiness and creaminess. They actually make the hot chocolate with Avalon chocolate milk, which is a nice touch. The tuna melt is a bit basic but does include some diced up celery ? in the tuna mix. They use a press on the tuna melt so the grill impressions are noticeable on the bread but it could use more of a crispness to the exterior IMHO. Overall, a much better experience than my first visit.
I had the chicken panini with coleslaw, it was very good. My brother frequently comes here for lunch, and thought I'd enjoy it.
Cute spot for lunch with a nice variety of food! I love coming for the soup and sandwich lunch combo. The food is always fresh and tasty.
