Great experience at MST. Big thanks to Robert for taking care of us. There was a little issue with the seating and tables which was quickly resolved. Our waiter was knowledgeable and quick witted which I appreciated. My partner that I was with has a dairy sensitivity and they were able to accommodate that, would have been useful to be able to read the menu and have some that information in advance. The food and drinks were fantastic. They have a great local selection of beer and the cocktails were unique and adventurous. I had the MST burger with bacon and while a touch salty to be expected -- also thank goodness. The food was fantastic. Drinks were worth trying and I'm fully supportive of flying outside of the safe zone when you have great fallbacks like local beer. I'm not going to knock Stars, if I could rate this on a scale of ten I'd give them an 8. The two things I'd like to see changed are, tell giving them access to the patio area. And some clear labeling for recipes for diners with allergy concerns. All in all, great food, awesome architecture and atmosphere. I'd definitely go back.
Contemporary American food served in a modern and upscale ambiance with prompt and friendly service. Cocktails and food were great. We loved the pasta and the scotch egg, both were delicious and unique. Dessert was ok. Also tried their brunch recently and it was awesome.. and definitely 5 star. Highly recommend it..
Mulberry Street Tavern is a contemporary American style dining option located in downtown Des Moines. Nestled just inside a popular hotel, this fine ding option offers a good variety of American style cuisine. The lights are dimmed and the décor sets a romantic, upscale ambiance. We visited for my birthday dinner, a group of 5. We made reservations ahead of time which I highly encourage when you can especially in the current times. We did have to wait about 5-10 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. Once we were seated, our waiter greeted us in a timely manner offering water and requests of refreshments. This is where the establishment loses a star - the time it took to receive a beverage was discouraging. One of the individuals in our party asked for a brew when his entrée was served, and he didn't get it until his plate was cleared. Not ideal when you wish to enjoy your drink with your meal. He nearly forgot he ordered it until it showed up in front of him. Overall, I understand the goal of creating a fine dining experience, but I think there is something to be said about timely deliver of a beverage. The meal, that's quite different. Let's chat about the food. We ordered a Cheese Charcuterie, Ricotta Gnudi, French Onion Soup, several entrees and two sides. Everything was timed as expected for a fine dining establishment except the sides. The side dishes were served before we received our entrees. Quite odd in my dining experiences. By the time we got out entrees, I don't think anyone was actually hungry. Portions were well sized for all meals, nothing over the top. The mac n cheese and Brussel sprouts were favorites at the table as well as the French onion soup. I would encourage you to reserve a table ahead of time, plan for a two hour meal time, and come with an appetite. This is a fine dining experience, so expect prices to reflect that goal.
Even with a reservation we were seated 15 minutes past the reserved time. Waited over 35 minutes to receive our food. Was told by the staff at Surety Hotel that the MST double burgers were the best in town. This was the worst burger I’ve ever had. Top bun was burnt black, meat was so salty my mouth turned dry, struggled to get through half of the burger. Brussel sprouts in the Brussel sprout carbonara were undercooked. Salmon was delicious, but very small portion. Not worth the money. Would rather go to Five Guys for a burger.
Upscale inviting atmosphere with delicious food and drinks. I had the pork chop with a side of the brussel sprout carbonara that was wonderful. Our server was spectacular and graciously compensated for a couple snafus with our orders. 2 others at our table ordered the pasta dish and both came out cold which was corrected but still had to take off a star. Will definitely give this place another shot.
Wonderful small plates and charcuterie boards. Oysters were fantastic. The $14 dollar cocktails were fantastic. The Iowa Martini is something to avoid. My burger was lackluster as the Sriracha pickles tasted more like a fresh cucumber. My partner's half chicken was burnt as well hence the three stars. Service was great it just seems the kitchen and the pricing don't align. After tip the bill ended up being $250. Not an establishment I would add to the rotation. Bubba, Fresko, Proudfoot & Bird are all better alternatives if you're in the area and looking for a pleasant meal where you won't hear the subwoofer and atrocious music from wedding parties in the hotel event room.
Okay, let's get started. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere- dim lighting, modern, classy, and clean! Great for a date or a cocktail solo at the bar me. The Oragami Button was delicious! I never knew gin and jasmine tea paired so well! The menu is small but you'll still be indecisive about what to order, at least I was. I started with the oysters which were Pink moon oysters from prince Edward island and were so delicious! They were sweet and fresh and light. So good I had to order another round. I then sampled the Spanish octopus. Let me tell you- octopus can be terrible if it's not cooked properly. This dish is an A+! The octopus was tender and tasty. The potatoes with the garlic pesto was amazing. The garlic was mellowed out and the potatoes were so crispy yet soft while the radish on top really helped to cut through the richness of it all. I loved every bit of this. It was savory comfort food at its best. Now let's talk Pasta. The Pappardelle pasta specifically. I was informed that the pasta was made in house and you can tell. Fresh pasta has more of a bite to it and is just simply better. This is one of those rare dishes that you think about the next day and wish you could have a giant bowl of it magically appear in front of you. The sauce was so complex- rich from the meat, sweet from the tomatoes, and just so damn good. You know that moment in Ratatouille where he's transported in time... yea that was Me. Just get the pasta. Now for the finale- dessert. Absolutely delicious. I ordered the lemon ricotta cheesecake. Sinful. Like everything a good cheesecake should be it was thick and Creamy but still light. The thyme buttercream was a very rich savory sweet addition and the lemon curd's tartness cut through all the richness beautifully! Every bite was the best bite. Fully enjoyable experience, I will definitely be back when I'm in town again.
Drove by this location lit up at night and thought it was beautiful and made a point to go here on a date night. We were super impressed! The place is a total vibe- warm, cozy, sophisticated, earthy. The food was a hit as well. We enjoyed the pappardelle, oyster mushroom gnudi, brussel sprouts, and the burger. Everything was so full of flavor and completely delicious and beautifully presented. We can’t wait to go back!
My boyfriend brought me here for Valentine's Day. We chose to do the prix fixe menu to sample a bit of everything for $70 and also added a wine pairing for an additional $30. I had been to MST before with girlfriends and was extremely disappointed with the meal because everything was over-salted. The server, manager, and cook tasted our food and comped our checks because they agreed. I experienced the opposite on this visit. There was no seasoning at all on some dishes. I let the server know that the dressing on the salad was too lemony and that's about it. I didn't feel like ruining her night by complaining about every dish. I was a server/bartender in my younger years. The crab agnolotti was good except it was cold. The caramelized beets were underwhelming. The IPA short ribs were both cold, under-seasoned, and dry. And, the chocolate cake in the dessert was bone-dry. You might be asking why I didn't just salt the dishes afterwards. When food, especially meats are salted while cooking, it is slowly incorporated into each part of the tissue. When you salt after, it's just lying on top. Tastes different. Anyway, not really interested in coming back here and if anyone suggests it I'll be fighting them to go somewhere else. It's not normal to have two bad experiences, years apart, at a restaurant. We went out for a second Valentine's Day dinner on the 15th to make up for this one. On the other hand, their staff is perfection. Everyone is extremely nice, and welcoming. Their food is just nothing special, especially at that price point. Go for the cocktails! Those are flawless! The last 8 photos are from my first visit
Wonderful intimate restaurant inside the historic Surety Hotel. The menu is small, but they focus is on fixing flavorful & well presented food. Extensive drink list & options for non-alcoholic drink mixes - the ginger lime drink was delicious! Staff were attentive & friendly.
