Very cool place and you can see for miles and miles! I good long walk in a nice and wonderful setting.
August 20, 2021 - The Kineo State Park offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy NATURE in all its glory ! Your day could include: *$13 ferry ride to island from Rockwood *Could play 9 holes of golf $$ *Could hike one of several trails in Park *Could see fantastic views at Fire Tower *Could pack lunch *Could buy snacks at Golf course *Could hike to beach to swim You should know “Kineo” refers to the island, the mountain, and the State Park. . . . Confusing? I’d rate this Park as a fun 4.8 experience, with “ strings attached” . The Kineo State Park can only be reached by boat/ ferry which costs $13 ! This hourly ferry ride is available at Rookwood Landing. The ferry is a 5 minute ride to the island. . . bring your camera, or binoculars, also water & food! Hiking Trails available: Carriage Trail - 2 miles easy Bridal Trail - 1 mile easy/moderate summit Indian Trail - .5 mile moderate links up with Bridal to summit , along cliff ! North Trail - 2 miles easy/moderate See map Our group of 9 included a spunky 82 year old lady who climbed the Bridal Trail to the Fire Tower . . . for the million dollar views at the top! The trail has wet slippery rocks, be careful! This trail starts out easy, but becomes moderately difficult as you climb higher. The Indian Trail hugs the cliffs for amazing views of Kineo Island and Moosehead Lake at a quicker ascent & difficulty level. Please consider the ages of those climbers in your care. . . The Fire Tower is the “ pay off” with 360 degree views of Moosehead Lake! Took us about an hour to reach the top! Younger climbers probably can do this climb in 30 minutes. On a warm day, we were glad to carry water up and back for refreshment. Restrooms & snack bar available at the 9 - hole Kineo Golf Club. As you leave the state Park property, you enter private property. There are several beautiful cottages of residents, some will rent out to guests during the year. Some have their own boats and docks on private land. You’re asked to respect their privacy. The golf course is open to the public. Clubs & carts available for a fee. Interesting Facts about Mount Kineo * 1,789 feet above sea level *700 foot climb to summit *Composed of Rhyolite *Indians used rhyolite for stone tools 1840 - John Bradbury paid $350 for Kineo 1850’s - Henry D. Thoreau visited Maine, and climbed Mount Kineo 1880 - 1950’s Kineo big Vacation Resort 1909 - 1st Chief Fire Warden Louis Oakes 1960 - Fire Warden Station closed 1990 - Kineo State Park opened *The tale of Indian Chief Kineo . . . Nearby Indian tribe fed up with their cruel Chief, decided to exile the unrepentant man to the island. That Indian Chief was Kineo ! so the legend says
Great hike. Took the Indian trail up and the other easier trail down. Lot of climbing but great hike. A 5 years old GR dog did it with a breeze
This park is a beautiful hidden gem in Northern Maine. If you're looking for a secluded, but eventful hike, then this could be it. There is a beautiful fire tower at the summit, and the views are spectacular.
The oxygen smells so good here. I wish I could breathe it everyday.
Take the Indian trail up, steep but stunning. Great hike. a Moosehead must
