GORGEOUS. Visited Gulf Hagas and what a gnarly fun hike that was plus the views of the waterfalls along the way were breathtaking. If using AllTrails...do not follow the GPS Google maps to trailhead parking it'll lead you astray. Follow the "how to get there" instructions. Well worth the drive and hike, saw maybe 2 other people on a gorgeous Saturday. Hike was definetly a moderate 8.3 miles with lots of incline, exposed roots and rock scrambles. Superb hike. One of Maines hidden gems will be back to camp!
We visited recently to hike the Gulf Hagas Trail as well as trails near the Gorman Chairback Lodge. The Gulf Hagas Trail offers some scenic waterfall views. We hiked from the top towards the bottom of the trail so that we didn't have to hike in the water. We visited Stair Falls, Buttermilk Falls, Billings Falls and The Jaws. The hike has rocks and lots of tree roots. Hiking poles are recommended. The hike winds through fir, balsam, birch, and maple forest. It is pretty.
AMC Medawisla Lodge in Maine is an outstanding vacation spot for hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and star gazing.
Wooden bridges and planks could be replaced on the Gorman trail but other than that it was awesome love Thatcher
Only a great and loving power greater than man could create such beauty #totalserenity #Godisgood
My brother told me about this spot, so I had to check it out myself. I am so happy I did, because I drove by various ponds and trails that I will need to check out in the future, including tomorrow possibly. I did go to the summit of Laurie's Ledge, but I missed the sign to turn for the Ledge view. However, the summit alone was definitely worth the hike.
Thank you AMC for providing us with such a beautiful area. The wildlife I saw while I was there was spectacular. The highlight was seeing a mink, though I did see plenty of birds of prey, woodland birds and water foul. I loved listening to the loons howling at night. Every fox a deer I viewed seemed very healthy. Finally the trout fishing was amazing.
I felt the cost of entry was way too high. It's $15 PER PERSON $10 per person if you live in Maine. Not per car, mind you... per person. Even if you have only 2 adults, you are still paying more many than you would for ANY national park. Wihle the hiking and scenery are very good, they are not national park caliber. Meanwhile, the Applician Mountain Club The non-profit that manages the park, has an endowment of $66 million dollars. To charge people $15 per person to go on a hike when you got $66 million in the bank is wrong. They can charge whatever people are willing to pay for thier overnight cabins and lodges. But be reasonable and charge $15 per car for park entry unless congress decides to make you a national park.
As a Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker I started my trek way down in Springer MTN. Georgia and I headed upto MT. Katadin, Maine. I hiked directly thru The 100 Mile Wilderness Of Maine. Be very certain that you have re-supplied on all food, water, & basic survival supplies before entering the 100 mile wilderness. 100 rugged & brutal miles with No stores, streets, nor highways in sight. Be sure you NEVER enter into the 100 Mile Wilderness poorly prepared.
This is a fantastic place to experience a lodge-to-lodge hiking or backcountry ski adventure. Each of the two lodges Little Lyford and Gorman Chairback has private log cabins for groups, bunkhouses for solo travelers, complete with gas lights, wood stove, home-cooked meals, hot showers, and wood-fired saunas. A third lodge is being renovated and will be available in the Spring of 2017.
