Mel Lastman Square

Story

Mel Lastman Square is a public square at North York Civic Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is named for former North York mayor (and later Toronto mayor) Mel Lastman. The square hosts a variety of activities throughout the year, but is primarily a quiet space in which to relax or eat lunch.Surrounded by Yonge Street on the east, the Toronto District School Board headquarters on the south, North York Civic Centre on the west, and the Central Library to the north, Mel Lastman Square was intended to be the heart of North York. With its sunken configuration and tree cover, activities can take place away from the busy traffic on Yonge Street. An artificial stream runs from a fountain under a large sign at Yonge street down into a large concrete square. Planters, trees, shrubs and wooden benches surround the area. A large pond is located in the centre of the square that serves as a relaxing focal point in the summer and a skating rink in the winter. The square also features an outdoor theatre for a number of events, including Sunday Serenades jazz concerts each summer. Other events include RBC Run for the Kids, a farmer's market, cultural festivals, Canada Day festivities and numerous family events.

Nice little spot to go skating. Reservations are required due to covid but they have drop-in as well.
Great rink to take the kids skating. This is my first year going with my kids and because you have to book rink time 45 minutes a session and they only allow 20-25 people at a time, there is plenty of space.
I always go here to skate. The rink is pretty decent in size and is always maintained and well-observed by personnel.
What a charming and beautiful little escape in the middle of North York. Having go slightly below street level allows the noise to be drowned out and you can enjoy the peace and quiet. We watched a peace ceremony that was a lot of fun there and didn't cost us anything.
I went on the first day of the season. It was not very busy. It was peaceful and relaxing to just go skate. People were friendly. It's a nice location, especially with several cafes close by to get a hot drink afterwards.
Love this place at night or at day time. Some thing or the other is always happening here. It's still very pretty during the lock down.
One of my outside work out routine stops! Nicely maintained area and is very clean. Rink is blocked off as its off season. On Thursdays, you can see harvest goods displayed and can purchase very fresh stuff!
You know what to expect. And bring back a lots of memories. Always clean and happy place
