McKelvie's Restaurant

No complaint about the service but I lightly agree with what others have said; the staff appear somewhat unhappy. The seafood is fresh and good quality but the preparation is poor. I had the signature fish platter - it was served nearly cold. I expect that the dish is prepared ahead of time and reheated when ordered. The lobster is done as lobster thermador which is not mentioned in the menu. Again I think it is done that way so it can be reheated instead of freshly prepared. Our child had kids fish and chips. The fish was really excellent and obviously freshly prepared. The desserts must be brought in and are not any better than what you can find at a grocery store. The quality just wasn't there for the price in my experience. I brought this up with our server and she was great about it. I'm being generous with my review because of our server.

Steak was acceptable. The mashed potatoes were below average, and on the cold side. The vegetables were not spectacular in that they tasted bland and could have used a sauce to make it somewhat tastier. Service was underwhelming. And the price raised eyebrows. Otherwise, this restaurant is vastly inferior to other seafood restaurants around the city. My colleagues who ate the seafood also came to same conclusion as myself. I will concede that the ambiance/interior was inviting and warm.

Second time visiting. We were seated right away and there was a good crowd. Ordered the lobster roll and it was great, lots of lobster no filler. Tasted fresh and very delicious. The service was a little off this visit. Our server wasn't that attentive and provide basic non-personalized service. The star of the visit was the lobster roll and for that I'd be happy to visit again.

Had one of the best seafood chowders here. Delicious food. Good prices. Nice atmosphere.

Not impressed by McKelvie's as a place to go with young kids (mine are aged 6 and 8). Service is very slow and very variable across servers (our server didn't seem interested in us at all, and knew very little about the food or drink offerings). The lobster and shrimp dumplings taste just like the vegetarian spring roles, so not sure how much seafood is actually in them. Fish meals were good. Went to the waterfront warehouse the night before, and found it was much better for oysters and other apps, and equivalent for fish dishes. Waterfront also much better set up if you have young kids.
