About

This is the OFFICIAL Portland Parks & Recreation Matt Dishman Community Center Page

Story

Matt Dishman Community Center is located on the site of the former Eliot Grade School. After the school was relocated, PP&R took it over in 1950 and remodeled the building, naming it the Knott Street Community Center. In the late 1960s, the local community lobbied to name the center after Matt Dishman, the first African-American Multnomah County sheriff and police officer in the City of Portland.

Matt Dishman community center has the distinction of becoming PP&R’s first multi-use facility, housing an indoor pool and a recreation center that function together as one, full-service community center. The indoor pool serves as the only competition pool in the PP&R system, featuring six 12-feet deep competition lanes, as well as bleachers and an observation balcony.

The community center includes a small, elementary-school size gymnasium, boxing gymnasium, auditorium with a stage and adjacent kitchen, game room, fitness center, craft room, preschool room and one multi-purpose classroom. In the 1970s, an outdoor pool was added and in 1991 the outdoor pool was totally rebuilt as an indoor pool. Other building upgrades included a new entrance to the combined pool and center, a new lobby and front desk, family change rooms, locker rooms and a new fitness room. In the following year the boxing room was enlarged, the old locker room was transformed to the craft room, the old fitness room became two classrooms and an accessible ramp was added to the auditorium stage.

In 2009, the fitness center was completely renovated to include new flooring, lighting, free weights, selectorized weight equipment, and new cardio machines with ear-phone jacks, along with four televisions, to create a state-of-the-art cardio theater system.

The facility hosts programs and activities for all ages including educational preschool; sports; birthday parties, special events and other community uses of the building; swimming lessons, training competitions, and open play swim and a myriad of fitness activities including Group Exercise classes, weight lifting and cardio and personal training.

The pool could be 5 degrees colder. Often times the pool water is warmer than the showers in the locker room… although, the showers have magically been consistently hot the last couple of weeks. First time in years! Staff are all super friendly. The open-hours suck
Really like this place but was very disappointed with my visit today! I observed an older gentleman come in from the street and proceed in getting in the hot tub without showeringhe was dry. I said something to him & he stated "I showered at home". I then proceeded in informing staff and they did absolutely nothing about the matter except tell me to fill out a complaint form. I ended up leaving after only being there 10 minutes. I felt that considering the rules are posted on the wall, They should enforce them!! Especially when someone is blatantly defying them! And especially considering that I am a paying member and all rules should apply to everyone the same. Again, very dissatisfied and disappointed with today's visit
A very good and well kept up rec. Center. The staff members are very, very good and well professional. So please bring the whole family and enjoy your selves with lot's of fun and laughter oh one more thing, don't forget to bring your recorder to take those first time laughter from the little one's baby videos . peace and blessings to you and your family always. I've been around racism, matter of fact I went to a all segregated school on the east coast. And I just barely got my membership and it's like I can feel the stares because of my skin color Mexican I don't feel comfortable here, I have a disease polymyositis I just use the hot tub too soak, and when I'm there I can feel the eye's on me because of my tattoos and Plus I'm homeless, But you go to Puerto Vallarta Jalisco mex and see how I live I'm 54 yrs old and I own my own home from working really hard theirs not too many 54 yrs old men who owns there own home with 32 acre's of Land. Don't judge people of how they look, color, because they just may have lot's more than the next person. Peace always Edwin Barrios
Me s showers are not very good. Soap is lacking so is hot water
Great place but the seats in the shower stalls could be a lot cleaner.
The facility is clean and the staff are wonderful in every way. I am grateful for the pool and will continue going. I do wish the water was a bit warmer and I would be more comfortable having a curtained dressing area.
Taking a knitting class there and utilizing my "access for all pass" that makes community centers and classes more accessible for me.
I've frequently came here as a child when the pool was outdoors, to this day many activities too fill your recreational needs.
The staff is very friendly and always greets me. The locker room is very clean. The swimmung pool is amazingly warm. I love e going there, especially during this pandemic time. Everyone who goes there is so upbeat.
The pool is only good for lap swimming, IF you can get a spot. The hot tub is large, but no kids allowed in it. I really wish there was a better swimming option in Portland during the winter.
