I really like this gym. It's unfortunate that others have had a bad experience, but so far things have been positive for me. I don't own a car and I find this location the easiest to get to. Bus # 8 & 70 will get you close. # 17 even closer. If you have a car, there's ample parking. If you go here between 5pm and 7pm, it's packed. But by 7:30, things thin out pretty quickly. I use both machines and free weights and can always get a good workout in

DISCLAIMER: One month in and I go at 5am, which means I miss the crowds but also management. That has made a big difference, as this place gets CROWDED and I find myself needing to “talk to a manager” about the simplest questions. Which means I never get my questions answered. Facilities are fine, though in a constant state of too little upkeep. Staff, admin & fitness, leave something to be desired. Classes are uninspiring, which defeats the purpose of my even going. There’s poor cell service, no WiFi and something weird about the water/showers. Still, I got in for a decent price and there’s ample parking. That said, no one can give me a straight answer about pricing for additional amenities (towels, courts) and when they do it always turns out to be more than they quoted. Makes me fear for the inevitable moment when I decide to alter my membership. I also have no idea what their personal training is like; I had to cancel my first appointment because of work and they never called me back to reschedule. I don’t trust these people, and that’s a real shame. Oh well... at least there’s a juice bar! 🤷🏽‍♂️

This was a pretty nice LA fitness in Portland. We stopped here to do a guest lass while we were vacationing in Portland. Gym was decently spacious and had a lot of seventies. The staff was also very friendly. None of the drink machines worked, nor was the smoothie area open, which was a bummer.

I was a member of this gym for 3 years that started in 2015. It was a good gym then. In the last year it all started to come unraveled. The locker room is always messy. The sinks in the locker room do not have hot water period. The sauna isn't that hot. The showers barely get above lukewarm. The soap dispensers are usually clogged or empty. What a disappointment this gym has become. If you are looking to start a membership here, run the other way.

In my experience with gyms, the convenience of the location is the biggest seller. This is really the only conveniently located gym near me or my workplace. I've had a subscription since the end of December and have enjoyed going to a few yoga and spin classes. Most of the classes seem to happen earlier in the day, which makes it difficult to go to them with my work schedule. My workout mostly consists of machines and cardio. I've only ever had to wait for a chance at a treadmill once, but I found that pretty frustrating. I almost always go during peak hours- between 6:30-8. I dislike the layout of the gym, I don't understand why the cardio machines have to be facing the free weight, lifting scene and wish there were a better separation of the two. I also think the CrossFit folks would be better served with a dedicated space for their shenanigans. The crowd becomes a problem in the locker room as well, where people have to wait their turn just to get to their stuff. As other reviewers have mentioned, the fact this is in a basement with poor air circulation makes the body odor, chlorine and laundry detergent smells mix in a bad way. The positives outweigh the negatives here, it's bigger and has more features than some other gyms I've been to in Portland and in NYC for the price. Unless another gym opens up in an as convenient spot, I am likely to continue to patronize LA Fitness.
